Tony Todd Cast as Zoom on The Flash

Candyman actor Tony Todd to voice the new big bad for season two of The Flash: Zoom!

For the past couple of weeks, as we have been getting closer to the season two premiere of CW’s hit series The Flash, we have been getting a ton of exciting casting announcements of new DC characters that will be coming in the new season.

But we had yet to hear anything about who would be playing the big bad Zoom, until this week as Variety broke the news actor Tony Todd (Candyman) will be voicing Zoom, starting in the second episode titled “Flash of Two Worlds” which should be easily recognizable to long time fans of The Flash. However, according to executive producer and show-runner Andrew Kreisberg, in a statement to Variety, the show will be keeping the identity of Zoom as one of the new big mysteries of season two for a good while. In addition, he compares Zoom’s visual presence to the Spider-Man villain, Venom in the following quote to Variety:

“The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy”

When talking about what drives Zoom and how he differs from Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne’s (Tom Cavanagh) Reverse-Flash character, Kreisberg said the following:

“For us, the best villains are the ones who don’t have megalomaniacal ‘I want to rule the world’ motivations. Last year, the Reverse-Flash had a very simple goal which was ‘I just want to go home, and if people need to die or cities need to get wasted for me to get that, so be it.’ And Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season… simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.”

I’m exited to see how The Flash adapts Zoom from the comics universe and whether or not it’s Hunter Zolomon that we might see under that mask, from the the Reverse-Flash/Zoom mythology. On the other hand, I’m completely open for something new that hasn’t been done in the books at all and the casting of Todd as Zoom’s voice is nothing, but 100% fantastic.

In other The Flash related news, The CW also revealed a new promotional photo of Jay Garrick’s famous helmet which you can catch below as he will be coming into the show from Earth 2.

The casting of Todd as Zoom joins a big list of new characters coming to The Flash with Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), Patty Spivot (Shantel VanSanten), Atom-Smasher (Adam Copeland), Lewis Snart (Michael Ironside), father of Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Golden Glider (Peyton List), Jesse Quick (Violett Beane), Firestorm villain Tokamak (Demore Barnes) as well as Malese Jow returning to the show as Linda Park.

The Flash begins its second season on Tuesday October 6, 8/7c on The CW.
