Xander has a tough decision to make about mermaids at the loss of his father while Maddie’s father brings Ryn in for questioning!

Siren 1×07 “Dead in the Water” on Freeform had us unexpectedly tearing up. Ben (Alex Roe) teams up with Chris, (Chad Rook) Xander, (Ian Verdun) and Calvin (Curtis Lum) on the boat. But it wasn’t long before they were all under attack by mermaids. Donna (Sibongile Mlambo) makes her appearance in the attack as well. With a new mermaid, Levi, (Sedale Threatt Jr.) in tow. The battle didn’t end well for anyone as Donna made her way back into the water after being struck. But there was a confirmed casualty of the epic fight. Xander’s father didn’t make it and now Xander has more of a reason than ever to not only hate mermaids, but want to hunt them down and kill them as well.

Back on land, Ryn (Eline Powell) has gotten herself into more trouble than usual. She has been taken in for questioning by Maddie’s (Fola Evans-Akingbola) father. He was finally able to track her down and discover that she was the one with all the answers he needed to get back in the town’s good graces. But Maddie is able to come to the mermaid’s rescue and convince her father to let Ryn go. The cost of that was having to tell Maddie’s father the truth about Ryn and the existence of mermaids. But what will this mean for Ryn’s future and the future of other mermaids?

1. What were you thinking would happen when Maddie’s father discovered Ryn’s secret?

Athena (@tinygymshoes): I’m hoping that he’ll be on Maddie’s side now that he sees what Ryn is and that she is human friendly.

Ashley (@twister8291): I thought he would go into some type of insane asylum! His eyes were bugging out! Thought he would go nuts!

LaShonda (@HQ_Klaroline): As a man of honor, I’m hoping he will keep Ryn’s secret. But knowing that mermaids exist, he’ll want more answers like anyone else.

Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I definitely didn’t think he was going to react the way he did. Once he got over the shock, he was surprisingly okay with the whole thing.

Lauren (@Young_Dryas): His reaction cracked me up. I thought he would be so angry about the whole thing!

2. Were you shocked when Xander’s father died? Or did you sense that it was coming?

Athena: I wasn’t even expecting him to be in the boat, let alone dying!

Ashley: Right when they saw the mermaid get out I knew one person was alone and that was his father. I saw it coming.

LaShonda: I was in total disbelief that it was Xander’s father who died! Yes, I got teary eyed. I thought it was Chris who died!

Marilyn: I was tensed, waiting to find out who had been killed. When I found out it was Xander’s dad, I was shocked!

Lauren: So shocked! I really didn’t think anyone was going to die!

3. Do you think Xander will now become even more of a threat for Ryn?

Athena: Absolutely! He is now emotionally involved.

Ashley: Yes, because now he knows he’s not crazy. But he’s going crazy looking for a mermaid to capture!

LaShonda: Definitely a tough one! Anything is possible because we clearly don’t know Xander’s motives. What could he do with a Mermaid?

Marilyn: I think Ben is going to have a really hard time convincing Xander to come over to their side.

Lauren: Xander is going to go completely off the rails. I think he will hate mermaids even more now.

4. With her attack on the humans and going back into the water, do you think Donna has been injured?

Athena: Donna seems completely fine. I was a little shocked that she tried to attack the crew even after seeing humans she has met.

Ashley: I think she’s injured. This experience will let her trust Ryn more and get help from the good humans.

LaShonda: I’m betting Donna is just fine. If she’s learned anything about her encounters with the humans and her captivity the first time, she’ll be smart and stay away!

Marilyn: Part of me thinks she was injured. It’s either going to make her understand there are humans she can trust, or make her hate humans for good.

Lauren: Donna seemed hurt, but I think she probably heals fast and will be just fine.

5. We met a new character definitely on the mermaid side of things! What did you think of Levi?

Athena: I wasn’t expecting to be introduced to a new mermaid so soon. I was expecting them finding Donna and perhaps the military.

Ashley: I don’t remember that name! I have to go back and watch it! I was too absorbed in Maddie’s father knowing about mermaids!

LaShonda: It was just a matter of time until we met new mermaid. But a merman puts a whole new twist on things. This Levi character is definitely a hot commodity.

Marilyn: I’m so excited to see more of Levi! I am hoping that he could be the one to help Donna and Ryn reunite.

Lauren: It’s awesome that we get another main mermaid! I can’t wait to see more of him.

6. With more people learning about Ryn and the existence of mermaids, how much longer will Ryn be able to keep her secret?

Athena: Not very long if the situation escalates.

Ashley: I don’t think very long, which is scary! But I have a feeling the one who wants to capture them will capture one. They will teach him to not mess with mermaids!

LaShonda: With it being a myth about the mermaids, I know Ryn will be about to keep her secret. People would want proof and that’s something that won’t be shared because of the painful transformation it brings.

Marilyn: With the looks of things, the secret isn’t going to be a secret for much longer!

Lauren: If people continue to find out about mermaids, there isn’t going to be a secret at all.

7. Do you think there are other mermaids living in human form in Bristol Cove?

Athena: Hell yeah! The thought of mermen didn’t even cross my mind until this episode. The merman from the boat was definitely used to legs.

Ashley: Yes! When you could hear the sirens call, it zoomed into a group of three people! We have Helen! Who else is keeping secrets? It is the capital of Mermaid world!

LaShonda: Without a reasonable doubt I believe after all we’ve learned about their existence, anything is possible.

Marilyn: This episode really made me think there are more. Before then, it didn’t seem to be a possibility!

Lauren: Well, I do now! That episode showed me there could be mermaids everywhere!

Final Verdict: Mermaids could be anywhere in Bristol Cove and we want to know all of them!

We absolutely loved seeing Maddie and Ben go their separate ways this episode! The writers took a chance by opening up the possibility of multiple main storylines. But it’s a risk that was clearly worth taking as Ben and Maddie were shining on their own. Maddie saving Ryn from the police station showed all of Maddie’s best attributes and just how much she is capable of. Ben going off with Xander and the others showed us that he was much stronger than he has been given credit for so far. We’re really hoping to see Ben and Maddie have more of their own stories!

We hated seeing Xander going deeper down the hole of hating mermaids. It was bad enough seeing his distrust of them after what happened to Chris. But why are the show runners making an enemy in Xander? There are more than enough enemies going around that they don’t need to be adding anymore. If anything, some more allies need to be added to Ben and Maddie’s side. The two of them can’t continue trying to help Ryn with just the help of Helen and, more recently, Maddie’s father. They are going to need a lot more fire power to go up against the military and their elite force that is after the mermaids.

Next week, Ryn is going to be learning more about humans than ever. More than that, she is going to actually begin to experience emotions. Which is something that we haven’t seen from Ryn yet. As the town deals with the death of Xander’s father, Ryn will more than likely be experiencing more than just sadness. There is going to be some guilt mixed into those emotions as well.
