It’s all about the ‘Toit Nups’ this week as Jake and Amy finally settle on a date! As long as the Vulture doesn’t swoop in!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode 5×06, “The Venue”, on FOX was all about Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) wedding! Of course, the most important detail of the event besides the date is the venue! Jake and Amy are pleased to tell the squad they’ve got the perfect one. Unfortunately, the Vulture (Dean Winters) swoops in and steals it out from underneath them. Yes, as shocking as it is, someone has agreed to marry the Vulture. But it’s a wedding that may never make it to the altar if Jake and Amy have anything to say about it.
RELATED | BROOKLYN NINE-NINE ROUNDTABLE 5X05 “BAD BEAT”
The upcoming wedding isn’t the only thing that involved decisions this week as Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) tries to convince Terry (Terry Crews) that he doesn’t have to always try and make people like him. Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) is upstaged by his old enemy, Peanut Butter once again as Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) tries to convince him that he is a better partner than the horse. Finally, we’ve got Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) seemingly owning the online dating game. We still don’t know how that one is happening.
Let’s meet our roundtable of the week!

1. Jake and Amy have picked a date! But do you wish it was a bit closer than May?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): I do wish the date was closer so we can get a Peraltiago wedding sooner!
Kaysi (@julietknope): I do wish it was sooner and I have a bit of a hunch that it actually will be earlier than May.
Denny (@df_t7): Yes! I’m afraid that it could be a series finale. It would be beautiful, yes, but, no! I need so much more of Brooklyn Nine-Nine! It’s important to end a season with a cliffhanger and this is a wedding. Oh my heart!
Aurora (@AurorasBlog): No way! Why rush it? In real life, we wouldn’t expect someone to pick a date closer than that, so why would we expect it from them? There’s no rush. They have their whole lives ahead of them. Also, even not talking in a sense of what feels real, and just talking about what’s good TV, I bet there are some funny stories to be mined from being engaged. Bachelor/bachelorette parties? Bridal shower? Dress shopping? There are so many potential episodes to get out of an engaged couple. Why squander that?
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I definitely wish it was closer! But part of me is also glad that it’s a few months away. It will be so much fun to watch Jake and Amy continuing to plan the wedding. I just hope it doesn’t end up being a series finale! I want to see Jake and Amy in married bliss!

2. Amy and Jake shockingly agree on a lot of wedding decisions. Does that surprise you, given their vast personality differences?
Christina: It did surprise me a little bit that Jake and Amy agreed on so much. But I think that shows how much they’ve learned from each other over the years. Amy has learned to loosen up and Jake has gotten a bit more mature. I thought it was adorable that they were agreeing on so much.
Kaysi: The only reason I wasn’t surprised by that was because the decisions they made weren’t for themselves as much as they were to make the other happy.
Denny: No, because both wanted do something special for the other. If the ideas were reversed, I would’ve expected strange looks and teasing. But Amy wanted a “Die Hard” cake for Jake. Jake wanted cross-words on the flowers. They know each other so well and are so cute and romantic about it!
Aurora: No. Considering they’re such a good couple, there must be some things they have in common underneath it all. Also, I thought it was a great show of being giving and compassionate and equal. They thought about what mattered to the other person. Does Jake truly care what the flowers are wrapped in? No. So, why not use that opportunity to do something Amy would care about? Same for the groom’s cake. I thought it was lovely to see exactly how well they know each other! It was kind of amazingly, adorably, inspiringly beautiful.
Marilyn: It was a little bit surprising. Only because the show has always shown the differences between the two of them. Now we’re seeing the similarities. I am loving it, but it was a little surprising.

3. Do you think the Vulture had been deceiving Jean the entire relationship? Or did she really bring out another side of him?
Christina: The Vulture is truly a terrible person! I want to say Jean brought out a good side in him but he’s such a sleaze! I wouldn’t put it past him if he just wanted to marry her for her money.
Kaysi: We’ve never seen the Vulture not be a total jagweed. So if Jean really was able to bring out another side of him, it would be a real surprise to me.
Denny: Yes, without a doubt, he was just deceiving her. Not that he “can’t” change, but it didn’t happen. I liked that Pembroke was in the episode, the rivalry between them is great! I hate what he did, but it is so him!
Aurora: I think he’s been deceiving her the whole time. We have no reason to believe anything different about him. Ugh! The Vulture!
Marilyn: This is such a hard one! On one hand, all we’ve ever seen from the Vulture has always been negative. But we have no idea what kind of person he is outside of being a detective. Maybe he’s a completely different person around Jean. But then again, the dating site did kind of prove different. Though he could have been telling the truth when he said he was just nervous to be in a committed relationship. It doesn’t make it right, but still.

4. Jake has grown up a lot over the past 5 years. Is this mostly due to Amy’s influence? Or the experiences he’s had over the years?
Christina: I think Jake has grown up due to both Amy’s influence as well as his experiences. It seems like Jake started to grow up a bit when he realized he had feelings for Amy. He’s also had some great learning experiences from Holt.
Kaysi: He really has and I think it’s a mix of both of those things. Jake’s relationships with everyone in the precinct have shaped him in a lot of ways. I’d say both Amy and everything he has gone through with Captain Holt are probably the biggest influences on Jake’s growth and overall maturity.
Denny: Both! He allowed changes in his life for Amy. He wanted to be better for her. His love for her has changed him. But all the things he has been through have also done that.
Aurora: To some extent, it’s probably both. We’ve seen her influencing him in good ways. Such as when he started drinking water because of her. But I’m hesitant to say he’s changed wholly because of her. Women aren’t magical elixirs who change men or make them grow up. Jake’s been through a lot! That almost can’t help but change him.
Marilyn: Definitely a little bit of both. I think the rest of the squad has had an influence on him as well, especially Captain Holt. Amy has done a lot for him during the course of their relationship. Holt has become a real father like figure to Jake and has really helped him grow up. Terry has helped him as well. Everyone has had a hand in helping Jake mature. So have his experiences. All the things he’s been through, how could they not?

5. Captain Holt calls Terry out for being a people pleaser and Terry admits that he is. But is this really a bad thing?
Christina: To me people who are people pleasers are a bit weird. To me it seems they don’t realize they can’t please everyone and that’s a sad thought.
Kaysi: Terry’s being a people pleaser isn’t so much a bad thing as it is an unhealthy thing. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be well-liked but when it overtakes you and makes it difficult to move on, it can be a bad thing.
Denny: It is! Because this has become his goal. His behavior towards someone that isn’t even his friend. It is bad for him!
Aurora: It can be! I don’t think it’s an awful thing. There’s a lot of good in that quality. But, it can start to be a detriment to yourself, your job, or people you’re close with if you start sacrificing certain things to please people you don’t really need to worry about pleasing.
Marilyn: That’s a hard one. I think it’s a bit of both. It can be a good thing if you don’t take it too far. But I also think it’s a trait that can be really easy to take too far. Terry definitely can take it a little too far at times. But it is also part of what makes him so lovable. He just wants to take care of everyone and do what is best for those around him.

6. Hitchcock seems to be doing pretty well at the dating game. How in the world do you think he’s accomplishing this?
Christina: I wish I knew how Hitchcock is doing so well in the dating game because I would like to be on his dating level! Just not in a perverted weird way like him.
Kaysi: I have no idea! We know he is lying on his dating profile but even so, I have a hard time believing Hitchcock is some ladies man!
Denny: Well, he is a pervert. So he probably finds other perverted people online dating.
Aurora: I think I might disagree with the premise of this question. To my recollection, we just saw him get one notification, right? That could’ve been anything. Someone cat fishing him, someone who ghosts him, or someone who never shows. I’d personally be hesitant in assuming he’s doing well. Unless I missed some clues, which maybe I did! Guess we’ll see!.
Marilyn: First, Hitchcock had the girlfriend in prison, and now he has an online dating profile!? Where is he getting all of this game? I have a feeling that this is going to be a story line that comes up as something a little bigger later. I kind of hope it does anyway. Sometimes I wish Hitchcock and Scully got some more story lines of their own. They do seem to have a little more focus on them this year, and I’m loving it.

7. Peanut Butter makes Charles really doubt himself. But the squad is sure to cheer him up. Do you think Rosa is the one who leaked the video?
Christina: Oh yeah, Rosa definitely leaked the video! Rosa once said that she’s “a badass not an anarchist” and that’s so true. She’s a sweet person underneath her steel and a loyal friend. Rosa knows Boyle would’ve done the same for her.
Kaysi: Absolutely!
Denny: Definitely! Rosa cares a lot about Charles. Even wanting to blow off his craziness about Peanut Butter, she would do that!
Aurora: For sure.
Marilyn: Poor Charles! Being shown up by a horse! Again! I definitely think Rosa is the one who leaked the video, but I also think she had the whole squad in on it. I think they all helped to leak the video. I’m also glad that they threw the party for him at the end. Charles deserved some recognition for how good of a detective and partner he is!

Final Verdict: The upcoming ‘Peraltiago’ wedding is going to be worth the wait!
The writing in this episode had us focused mostly on Amy and Jake and we couldn’t have been happier about it! We have to wait until May to get the actual wedding but from the looks of things, it will all be worth it in the end. Not only do we get to watch them plan their wedding as the weeks go on, but we also get to see Jake continue to grow up. He’s come a long way in five years and we can’t wait to see how he continues to grow. Not to mention the development of the relationship between Amy and Jake. We got to see them go from friends and partners to being in a long term and committed relationship. Other shows could really learn a thing or two from this relationship.
On the flip side, it really sucks that the Vulture was able to keep the venue and that Jake and Amy had to pick a crappy venue for their wedding. While we know they are only showing things this way to prove that it doesn’t matter where the two get married, it still really bummed us out! We wanted to see them in their dream venue and it was hard to see the disappointment when they lost it. But who knows, maybe there is still a chance for them to get the Vulture to give them the venue back. Though with the history of the Vulture, we’re going to doubt it.
