Preacher renewed, Kingpin returning to Daredevil, and an update on Marvel’s New Warriors
Everyone wants their own superhero show these days, which means there’s a ton of superhero news to get to in this week’s Superhero After Dark! But first, let’s get to some news you may have missed.
A few weeks ago, we were given our first look at the new cast members for the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. A cool new Karen Page poster for Marvel’s The Punisher was also unveiled recently. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi shared what inspired him from the source material. In less positive news, Marvel’s New Warriors will not be moving forward on Freeform and will look for a new home elsewhere.
Recently, AMC’s Preacher was renewed for a third season and is expected to return in 2018. Fans of Marvel’s Daredevil can also look forward to Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/Kingpin) returning in season 3. Season 3 of Daredevil is also set to premiere in 2018 and will be streamable on Netflix.

Hot Topic: Arrowverse producer Andrew Kreisberg suspended after sexual harassment allegations and rationale for delaying the premiere of The Punisher confirmed by series star
Warner Bros. has suspended Andrew Kreisberg, an executive producer and writer on The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, due to sexual harassment allegations from fifteen women and four men who have worked with him. Ironically, Supergirl has prided itself on being a feminist show with strong female characters since its creation.
The Punisher star Jon Bernthal recently confirmed that the series premiere was delayed due to the horrific shooting in Las Vegas last month. Bernthal also discussed the topic of gun control in relation to the show and hopes it will generate an intelligent conversation. Despite the more recent tragedy in Sutherland Springs, Texas, the full first season of The Punisher is still set to premiere on Netflix on November 17th.
Guess Who: Legends of Tomorrow finds a voice for Mallus, Brainiac 5 has been cast for Supergirl, full Deadly Class cast revealed, and more!
There’s a lot of exciting casting news to report this week! Over on Fox’s The Gifted, Caitlin Mehner and Paul Cooper have been cast as twins Andrea and Andreas von Strucker, respectively. The full cast list for Syfy’s upcoming adaptation of Deadly Class was revealed this week as well.
After much secrecy, The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow has found its voice for Mallus, the mysterious and extremely powerful entity that heads the Cult of Mallus. While it’s unclear who will eventually be playing the character in his physical form, former Fringe actor John Noble has been cast to voice the character. Over in National City, Jesse Rath has been cast as Brainiac 5 on Supergirl. Brainiac 5 is a highly intelligent half-organic, half-computer alien. In keeping with the comics, he will be part of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 31st century. Winn’s (Jeremy Jordan) family is also being expanded in season 3. Laurie Metcalf has been cast to play Winn’s mother in the 15th episode of the season, which will air sometime in 2018.
With things already hot in Hell’s Kitchen, the Daredevil creators decided that wasn’t enough and will be turning up the heat even more by adding another FBI agent to the season 3 cast. Netflix isn’t only adapting multiple Marvel comics. They’re also adapting The Umbrella Academy and have cast X-Men alum Ellen Page in one of the leading roles.
TVAD Writers Room: Supergirl and The Flash swap tones, Arrow stays dark, and mutant growing pains in The Gifted
It was a busy week for our favorite DC and Marvel characters and it’s been equally busy for our TVAD writers. Supergirl said goodbye to Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) and fans were rather mixed on that departure. While her departure was expected, the show continued the trend of being much darker than previous seasons. The Flash, on the other hand, has completely changed directions after last season and has been more lighthearted and optimistic. Arrow has delivered the usual darkness that fans of the show have come to expect but it isn’t without its own faults. Fox’s The Gifted has continued to impress us and fellow fans with its stories about war and growing up with superpowers.
Shippers Ahoy!: A heartfelt goodbye to “Sanvers”
Much to the dismay of many Supergirl fans, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) (aka, “Sanvers”) broke up this week. Kevin Smith directed the episode in question, titled “Damage,” and helped the actresses prepare for their emotionally taxing scenes. While Lima’s lack of availability was the contributing factor to her departure, Leigh is hopeful that Maggie may be able to return in some form in the future if Lima’s availability changes.
Rumor Has It: Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery as live-action Nightwing?
Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery recently tweeted and deleted a picture of the DC Comics superhero Nightwing. According to The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay, who has teased a Nightwing movie, casting has yet to start for a movie based on the character:
“We haven’t started the process of casting NIGHTWING yet but when we do you’ll hear something because our search will be far and wide.”
But that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating and approving of Montgomery as a potential contender to play the Gotham City vigilante.
Talent Interviews: Stephen Amell discusses Batman and Vigilante; Plus Gotham’s Drew Powell and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Adrianne Palicki
Arrow’s Stephen Amell also recently discussed Oliver Queen’s name drop of Bruce Wayne in the second episode of the season. It’s unclear if the Caped Crusader will ever make an appearance in the Arrowverse, but Amell is a fan of the idea of Oliver and Bruce meeting. Amell was also disappointed that Vigilante wasn’t revealed to be McKenna Hall under the mask. Will the character, who was portrayed by Janina Gavankar, return in the future? It seems unlikely but nothing is impossible in Star City.
Gotham star Drew Powell recently discussed his role as Solomon Grundy. Is it possible Grundy will ever become Butch Gilzean again? Powell doesn’t think it’s possible:
“Certainly he’s changed forever. There’s no doubt about that. You can’t un-Grundy yourself. I think that there is an element of… it does go back to identity. Figuring out who are these people.”
On the Marvel front, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Adrianne Palicki said she would love to see her character Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird to team up with Black Widow. Nothing is currently official but she’d love to work with Scarlett Johansson, and we have to agree. We’d love to see that team-up!
Coming Soon: The Boys gets a series pickup, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger finishes filming, “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover gets a teaser, and more!
Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series The Boys has been picked up for an eight-episode order by Amazon. The series will be written by Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless), directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and will premiere in 2019. Netflix and Dreamworks have released a new trailer and art for Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters 2. Trollhunters 2 will debut on Netflix on December 15th. In other Netflix news, filming for season 2 of Iron Fist is set to start before the end of the year. Netflix also unveiled a new trailer for its upcoming German time travel kidnapping series, Dark.
Marvel fans will be pleased to know that Freeform’s upcoming series Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger has finished filming its first season. No release date has been announced. A new poster for the soon-to-be-released Hulu series Marvel’s Runaways has also been released that shows off the characters’ superpowers. Hulu has also released six new character posters for the series. Marvel’s Runaways premieres on Hulu on November 21st. The upcoming fifth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is premiering on December 1st on ABC, is looking like it will be quite the season, and now there’s a trailer!
Supergirl recently teased a possible future romantic pairing between James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), which could help shake up the character dynamics. David Harewood (J’onn J’onzz) also recently hinted at the immense power of season 3’s villain, the Worldkiller Reign (Odette Annable). As a follow-up to this week’s episode of The Flash, Katee Sackhoff said that fans can expect to see her return as the villain Amunet at some point in the future. The endgame for Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer) will be similar to his comic book counterpart, which means Sue Dibny will be appearing. John Constantine (Matt Ryan) will be making an appearance on Legends of Tomorrow, and apparently, he’ll be friends with Sara Lance (Caity Lotz).
The CW also debuted a short yet exciting teaser for their huge crossover event “Crisis on Earth-X.” Hollywood Reporter recently published a preview of the crossover event in a series of short interviews. It’s well worth taking a look at! Fans of Wentworth Miller’s Leonard Snart/Captain Cold will be disappointed to learn that the actor is filming his final scenes for the Arrowverse. A new version of his character will be appearing in the crossover event, which will be his swan song. “Crisis on Earth-X” will feature the largest DCTV team up yet. A ton of material is being packed into those four episodes. So be sure to tune in on November 27th and 28th on The CW.

What’s Happening This Week: The Danvers sisters go home, Harry is meeting Harry (and Harry), Slade reunites with his son, and the Mutant Underground struggles for survival
In the next episode of The CW’s Supergirl, Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) are heading home to Midvale in the wake Alex and Maggie’s breakup. Things are starting to escalate in Central City on The Flash. In “When Harry Met Harry…,” Barry (Grant Gustin) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) will ask for help from the smartest Harrison Wells’ (Tom Cavanagh) in the multiverse to help identify the Thinker. The next episode of Arrow will have Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) coming face to face with his son, and it doesn’t look like it will be a pleasant reunion. With the X-Men gone, the Mutant Underground will be struggling to survive in the next episode of The Gifted on Fox. Finally, in the season finale of Marvel’s Inhumans, Maximus will be revealing his plans.
