Jake and Holt pull an all night investigation and will stop at nothing to get a confession!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5×14 “The Box” on FOX reminded us once again how much we love the relationship between Jake and Holt. When Holt (Andre Braugher) volunteers his time to help Jake (Andy Samberg) nail his suspect to the wall, what we get is an incredible journey! The two bicker about who has the better interrogation tactics and even try to play good cop, dumb cop. But their suspect is a lot smoother than ever expected and seems to have an answer for everything. Good answers too! So good that there may have been a few moments that we doubted if Jake had the right guy or not.

As for the rest of the squad, we didn’t see much of them. What we did see was fleeting, and we found ourselves okay with that. Gina (Chelsea Peretti) was seen welcoming the suspect into the precinct and telling him which interrogation room to head into. Then there was a little of Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) the following morning heading into the precinct as Holt and Jake were coming out. Other than that, all we had was Holt, Jake, and their suspect, Philip (Sterling K Brown) filling our episode. But Jake was able to pull a confession out of smooth Philip despite his quick responses.

1. What did you think of Jake’s interrogation room methods?

Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): The screaming with the guitar had me laughing so hard! Jake is trying to grow up but he still has that immaturity to him.

Kaysi (@lilithsternin): His interrogation methods are always so entertaining. I love it all, but especially the callback to him playing his guitar and screaming.

Aurora (@aurorasblog): Jake’s incredible at what he does (and has such wonderful creativity).

Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I loved the call back to his guitar playing screaming from so long ago! Jake went in that room and gave it his all!

Pamela (@CharlesonPamela): I thought it was pretty great! Jake has always been a good cop, but I love seeing moments like his interrogation tactics.

2. Why did Holt want to work the case with Jake so badly instead of going to the opera with Kevin?

Christina: I think it goes back to him wanting to be included with the detectives. He said himself he missed interrogating.

Kaysi: I think Holt just really loves his job and he especially enjoys when there is a challenge.

Aurora: Even though Sterling K. Brown’s character said it was because Holt didn’t trust Jake, I think Holt just loves a good interrogation. I don’t know.

Marilyn: Maybe Holt missed spending time with Jake. It does seem like it’s been a while since the two have really bonded. Or maybe he was jealous of how much time Jake got to spend with Kevin!

Pamela: I just figured he didn’t like the opera. Holt and Kevin have always had a pretty steady marriage so Holt probably didn’t want to hurt Kevin’s feelings by telling him he didn’t want to go. Being a captain is a pretty good excuse!

3. Do you think Amy would ever allow Jake to use Gomez and Morticia themed vows for their wedding?

Christina: Goodness I hope not!

Kaysi: I highly doubt Amy would be cool with Gomez and Morticia vows!

Aurora: Sure, why not? She fell in love with the goofball he is.

Marilyn: Amy has always accepted Jake for who he is, including his silliness! But I think this may be pushing it a little far. Every girl dreams of her wedding, especially someone like Amy. She will definitely let Jake have a say in most things, but maybe not this far.

Pamela: I’m going to go with no. I mean, maybe Amy will let Jake write his own and not have a problem with him putting the references in his. But I really don’t think she will be including them in her own.

4. Philip is one of the smoothest suspects we’ve ever seen on this show. What did you think of him always having a sensible answer to every question thrown at him?

Christina: It was smart of Philip. He could see his smoothness was bothering Jake so he kept going. Jake wants everything to be easy and this guy was definitely giving him a run for his money.

Kaysi: He really is and I loved it! He was definitely one of the smartest suspects they’ve ever dealt with and he certainly kept Jake and Holt on their toes.

Aurora: I was so impressed!

Marilyn: I couldn’t believe he had such quick and relaxed answers to everything! There were a few moments I even thought Jake was going to go completely mental! Talk about a cool, calm, and collected suspect.

Pamela: Smooth is right. I think Philip might be the smoothest character we’ve ever seen on this show. It makes perfect sense for him to be played by Sterling K. Brown!

5. Was there ever a moment that you doubted Philip was the murderer? He certainly made a good case for himself.

Christina: He definitely did make a good case for himself. I thought this would be another of Jake’s mess ups where he might have had the wrong guy. Of course the bad guys are always caught though.

Kaysi: Yeah, briefly! It was because of how he was able to answer all of the questions with such ease that I started to have some doubts.

Aurora: Yes! All the time! I truly didn’t know if he was or was not the murderer until his confession!

Marilyn: Okay, I know Jake is never wrong, but this was a pretty close call for me. I’ll admit there were a few moments there where I thought this guy was going to end up innocent. But I should know better than to ever doubt Jake!

Pamela: I never fully thought he was innocent. But I won’t say there weren’t a few moments there where I wavered. I was really on edge waiting for Jake to get what he needed to really stick it to Philip!

6. Do you think this case and interrogation was good for the relationship between Holt and Jake? It’s been a while since they spent this much time together.

Christina: I think it was good for Holt to see that he has had some influence on Jake and that Jake has matured a bit. I also think it was good for Holt to see that Jake still has some growing up to do.

Kaysi: Absolutely! It was wonderful seeing them work together again as a team. Jake tries so hard to get Holt’s approval and I really love it.

Aurora: I think they have a wonderful relationship that grows more all the time. Sure, it was great that they spent this time together, and probably was indeed good for their relationship. But I don’t think their relationship needs much work, as it seems stellar.

Marilyn: It so was! Not only was it good for them, but it was amazing for us! About time too! We needed a good Holt and Jake centered episode. The show more than delivered!

Pamela: Just when you don’t think their relationship can get any better, we get an episode like this. I love the relationship between Holt and Jake. I love episodes that revolve around them even more.

7. What did you think of an episode being so centered on Holt and Jake? The only other people we saw were Philip and few members of the squad briefly.

Christina: Ugh, I missed seeing Rosa and Amy so much! I really love this whole cast. I think they’re brilliant. But sometimes it can be a bit too much of Andy Samberg without the rest of the cast. I now definitely know I mostly watch for Rosa and Amy!

Kaysi: I enjoyed it! I definitely missed seeing the other characters, but I genuinely love the relationship between Holt and Jake. So it was nice to have an episode more focused on them.

Aurora: It was a little odd to me. I kept wondering when other people were going to get involved. But it was a great episode! So, as much as I love all the other characters, I didn’t mind spending an episode focusing on just two of them.

Marilyn: Is it bad if I say I didn’t even really notice? This episode was just done so well that the time passed right by and I literally didn’t even realize the squad wasn’t present. I kind of like when there is a focus on just a few characters for an episode every once in a while.

Pamela: I like that this show dares to do things like that. There are probably a lot of other shows that would worry about ratings if they took an entire episode and dedicated it to just two of their main characters. Especially in a show with a lot of main characters!

Final Verdict: While we love the squad, we could use a few more episodes like this one!

We absolutely loved seeing an episode that was all Holt and Jake! Holt and Jake have always had a pretty great relationship, despite the slightly rocky start in the first episode of the series. We think it’s pretty clear that Jake has always looked up to Holt as a father figure. This episode brought that all home for us. If you ever forget how much these two mean to one another, look no further than this! Even though they didn’t completely agree with each other’s methods, they were still willing to try out different ideas. This episode showcased the amount of trust and respect Holt and Jake feel for each other. We couldn’t have asked for more! But we were given more anyway! What could possibly be better than a Holt and Jake hug? Nothing we tell you! Nothing! Okay, except maybe Jake and Amy’s wedding.

We loved this episode, but we aren’t so sure we loved the case. It was strange to see Jake starting off the episode in the interrogation room with a suspect in a case that we had hadn’t heard anything about. This really seemed like it was meant to be a two part episode. We only learned about the case as Jake questioned Philip and even then, we didn’t learn everything. In a show that usually takes pride in displaying full cases and playing them out to their full story with a comedic twist, this felt off.

It looks like next week could be the same type of style as this week’s episode! Jake and Amy are teaming up to catch an arsonist! One who just may be a personal hero of Amy’s. Not to mention that with every week that passes by, we are one episode closer to Jake and Amy’s wedding! Next week is sure to amp us up for the couple’s upcoming nuptials! Not to mention we love seeing these two in action together! Talk about the perfect team! There’s also a new detective car that’s about to be fought over by Terry, Rosa, Hitchcock, and Scully! As a bonus we’re also going to have Gina trying to give Holt advice on how to make his speech to become Police Commissioner a little more catchy.
