Amy becomes a little star struck when she meets one of her heroes and Jake tries to rein in his jealousy!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5×15 “The Puzzle Master” on FOX had us falling in love with Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) all over again. With Amy passing her sergeant exam, Jake sets up one last case for them that is extra special. But Jake gets a little more than he bargained for when Amy’s hero turns out to be much better looking than expected. Vin (David Fumero) also seems to be much more interested in working with Amy alone. So while Jake intended for this case to be all about he and Amy working as a team, he ends up feeling like a third wheel.

Meanwhile, Terry (Terry Crews) has received the new detective vehicle and it is beautiful! The only problem is, he isn’t the only one who thinks so. Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz), Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller), and Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) are all interested in the vehicle too. They think names should be drawn to decide who deserves the new vehicle. Terry may agree, but he sure won’t be going down without a fight. Then we have Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) dealing with a more politics than just his commissioner debate. It’s a good thing he has Gina (Chelsea Peretti) by his side.
Let’s break it down with our roundtable guests of the week!

1. Did you have any doubts that Amy had passed her sergeant exam?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): It’s Amy. Of course not!
Kaysi (@lilithsternin): None at all! She puts so much effort into everything that she does, there was no way she wasn’t going to pass!
Aurora (@aurorasblog): Psssht. No, not at all. She’s Amy.
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I didn’t until Holt and Terry started talking about how their letters were much thicker. That and I want Amy to stay right where she is.
Pamela (@CharlesonPamela): Not really. Amy is one of the smartest people on this show and she has worked so hard for such a long time for this!

2. With Holt campaigning for commissioner and Amy becoming a sergeant, what does this mean for the future of the squad?
Christina: Just keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t mean the end of the show! The squad’s got to grow. Maybe Jake will finally fully mature.
Kaysi: I don’t know, it’s definitely looking like there are a lot of potentially huge changes coming up. I’m excited to see what this will lead to.
Aurora: I look forward to finding out! I trust the Brooklyn Nine-Nine writers to make anything work!
Marilyn: I hope it only means good things! As long as it doesn’t mean the end of the show, I’m completely game for it!
Pamela: It could mean a huge opportunity to add another character or two to the squad. With the show being on its fifth year, major changes could give the show new life! There is some serious potential for awesome things!

3. Do you think Terry is who deserved the new detective vehicle?
Christina: I would’ve liked to have seen Rosa in that bad ass car, but Terry deserved that car because he’s like the squad mama. He keeps everyone in line.
Kaysi: Yeah, I think so. Like he said, his car is the oldest!
Aurora: I do! He’s a great boss and a great friend, and his car was super old. I also don’t think he should’ve been pressured into doing the drawing in the first place.
Marilyn: Honestly, I was kind of upset that Rosa, Hitchcock, and Scully even challenged Terry getting the car. He was the one who put in for it and he has seniority. The other squad members should have stood down.
Pamela: Absolutely! The others wouldn’t have even known about it if Terry hadn’t brought it to their attention.

4. Would Jake have been as jealous if Charles hadn’t been constantly putting ideas in his head?
Christina: Maybe. Jake knows Amy could probably do better than him because Amy is super smart. Plus, Vin was super hot! I’d be pretty dang jealous if I was Jake.
Kaysi: No, I don’t think he would’ve been quite as jealous. He and Amy have such a secure relationship that I definitely don’t think he would’ve been so bothered by Vin unless he was getting ideas put in his head.
Aurora: Hmm, I think he would’ve been about the same amount. It seemed like Charles was bringing out what was already there, rather than creating something new. His last line to Vin had me in stitches!
Marilyn: Jake was going to be jealous either way. But Charles definitely didn’t help anything. He put so many little thoughts in Jake’s head.
Pamela: I think Jake was going to be jealous no matter what or who was talking to him about it. But Charles whispering in his ear probably made Jake act on that jealousy more.

5. In order to solve the case, did it have to be approached by the team as cops or puzzlers?
Christina: The puzzler angle seemed to work really well. It wound up solving the case instead of approaching it in a cop way.
Kaysi: I think in this case it helped to be both. Jake and Amy were able to crack the puzzle. But because of their skills as cops they were able to figure out who did it.
Aurora: A little of both. Thankfully, our cops are great at puzzles in general, as that’s a big part of what being a cop is!
Marilyn: Hmm, I would like to say it was better to handle the case as cops. But being puzzlers is really what brought everything together. I think in order to be a cop, the squad all have to have a little puzzler in them.
Pamela: Maybe both, but more toward the puzzler side of things. Vin really did have a lot of great ideas!

6. How did you feel about Holt using his speech to stick up for Olivia?
Christina: I think it was nice of him, but I don’t like how it set up competition for him.
Kaysi: I loved it! It was a great way of showing how much Holt cares about people being treated fairly and getting the same opportunities. It was great to see.
Aurora: I loved it! What a true show of character. Protect your biggest competitor because of what you believe. It will be very hard to create a just world, if marginalized groups don’t stick up for each other. So, I was really pleased and proud of him along with thankful.
Marilyn: I definitely wasn’t surprised. But I was still really impressed with Holt and who he is.
Pamela: The good part of me wants to stand up and cheer for how amazing that was. But there is a part that is kind of sighing because this kind of feels like a Munch situation all over again.

7. Were you surprised to see Jake being honest with Amy and showing his vulnerable side about being jealous of Vin?
Christina: I was a little bit surprised. Jake was really jealous and he didn’t like it. As I mentioned before, Jake knows Amy is super smart and he’s not on her level with intelligence in certain things. It was cute to have Amy reassure him that she loves him no matter what.
Kaysi: Not really. He has changed so much over the series and I really think he and Amy have a relationship where they can be fully honest with each other.
Aurora: Nah. They’re an amazing couple! Of course they’d be vulnerable with each other.
Marilyn: I was surprised that Jake admitted it so easily. Basically, all Amy had to do was ask and he straight up answered her.
Pamela: It’s really not very often that we get to see Jake actually show any type of negative emotions. Especially vulnerability. So, yes I was completely surprised.

Final Verdict: Any episode that centers around Jake and Amy is a guaranteed win in our books!
Not only did we get to see a side of Jake that is usually kept hidden, but we got to see Jake and Amy shine as a couple. We are once again reminded about the amazing way these two are able to bring out the other’s vulnerable side. It’s always been clear how smart Amy is and there has always been a part of Jake that never felt good enough to be with her. When the writers bring this issue to the forefront and deal with it, we are definitely here for it. This is a couple that have never had the issue of breaking up and getting back together for drama sake. They’ve worked their way up from friends to partners in every way. The writers have certainly done right by all the fans with these two.

The only issue we really had with this episode came from the newly issued detective vehicle. Terry completely deserved that new car, and while he did ultimately end up with it, we are pretty disappointed in how that result came about. There never should have been any question as to who would get the car. Not only did Terry deserve it, but he was the one who put in for the car and he ranks above the other detectives. We can appreciate that the writers added this in for its comedic value, but it was just something that grated on our nerves.
Next week is going to be a double-header! Jake and Charles are not only going to get themselves involved in a business scheme, but we are about to meet a new character. Jake apparently has a half-sister, something we aren’t too surprised about, but we’re intrigued to see her anyway. Not only that, but Jake is going to ask her to stay with him and we’re sure there is going to be plenty of laughs that come from the situation. But there is probably going to be some drama as well!
