Nina Dishes on The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Premiere
With the season six premiere of The Vampire Diaries airing tonight, the show’s beautiful leading lady, Nina Dobrev (Elena) spoke to many media outlets about the new season. We’ve gathered the latest interviews with the talented actress and previewed what she had to say. Take a look!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nina dished on Elena’s mental state, a ‘divided’ season, life at Whitmore and much more.
What’s her mindset like at the start of the season?
It’s eerily happy, unconventionally so, and confusing for a lot of people — for her, for her friends and for the audience. She’s not really dealing with it. She’s sort of masking it and pretending that it never happened in a way. It’s a ticking time bomb. She’s just delaying the inevitable. It’s not healthy and it hurts people around her and it makes her do things that she probably wouldn’t otherwise. It’s like a drug addiction. She goes off the deep end.Where does Elena believe Damon and Bonnie ended up? Is she holding out hope that they’re not gone?
I feel like she doesn’t have any hope of [Damon and Bonnie coming back], which is why she does what she does because if she did have hope, then that would be what kept her going….What’s the likelihood that she’ll ponder getting back out in the dating game again?
I don’t think she’s in a place where she’s going to be able to date or think about dating. That doesn’t mean other people aren’t going to pursue her in that time because they don’t know her situation. Who knows?…Elena has a new mentor in Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe). What is that dynamic like?
It’s cold in the beginning. Jo is a full-on doctor and she doesn’t have any relationships with anyone in our world and so she does the tough-love approach to everything. It definitely works, but with anyone, she has a softer side and we get into that a little later in the season.With Alaric now teaching a class on occult studies, which Elena happens to be enrolled in, how is their relationship different?
It’s really great that Alaric is back. He’s a support system for Elena, he’s also a parental figure in her life. It’s also been really great for me to get to work with Matt Davis again. I loved working with him so it’s been exciting to have him back on the show. It’s been a good thing all around.

TVLINE | Elena looks to be at her lowest point in Season 6, which must be rough for you as an actress. Has this been some of your most intense work yet?
Weirdly no. To be honest, the past six years have kind of blurred together. I can’t even separate specific episodes as being more difficult than others, though I’ve definitely had difficult experiences that have pushed me as an actress. This is just another one of those experiences. I mean, Jeremy’s died, Bonnie’s died, my parents have died, I’ve died — about three or four times — so I’ve had to go through a lot on this show. It’s like actor boot camp, I love it.TVLINE | Damon’s obviously been a huge — at times even controlling — part of Elena’s life for the past five seasons. Who is she without him?
Well, there was a period, of course, when she was with Stefan, and then alone before that, so she’s been through various phases — though she has been with Damon for a very long time. I think that’s the main question in the first episode, and even Elena is going to have to figure that out, herself: Who is she without him? She definitely has a very unique, odd, unhealthy way of dealing with his loss, which will ultimately define who she is.TVLINE | OK, I won’t make you. But I do want to ask why Elena and Stefan are holding hands on the Season 6 poster.
Wouldn’t you like to know! All of our characters go on a journey this season; Damon and Bonnie have disappeared, which is why they’re holding hands, so Stefan and Elena have to take the lead and save the day. They’re left to pull through and grieve the people they’ve lost.TVLINE | I know you can’t tell me, but can you give me a one-word hint about where Damon and Bonnie are?
One word? Um… Oblivion. Sorry, I honestly can’t think of anything else that wouldn’t completely give it away!….

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nina and co-star, Ian Somerhalder dished on the season six premiere.
“We do fast forward four months, so the initial shock grieving, we’ve already surpassed,” Nina Dobrev said. “Now we’re seeing the second phase of it, which is eerily deceiving and odd. It’s not a very conventional way of dealing with grief.”
…whose shoulder will she lean on now that Stefan’s missing in action? “Caroline is a rock, and Alaric’s back, so she does have the two of them,” Dobrev said. “But she’s also in a way shut them out a little bit as well.”
[Jeremy] “He’s in Mystic Falls and he’s going through his own grieving, so they’re still in touch, but he’s shutting her out a little bit and going through his own process. And she can’t really be there for him all that much,” Dobrev said. “There’s only so much she can do from where she is and she’s in her own world. She’s trying, but there definitely is a bit of a disconnect between them.”
As Ian Somerhalder put it, “He’s pissed off. They’re stuck in a place they don’t want to be, and Damon’s fiercely loyal. He feels the need to get back to his family. They’re trying everything. They’re Scooby-Doo-ing that sh– like crazy.”
“You never really get to see these two together because they do have a lot of fun together,” he said. “Damon’s a goofy man. He likes to have fun, and Bonnie doesn’t take s–t from anyone anymore…It’s awesome.”
As for Damon’s drive to get back to Elena, Somerhalder says, “He’ll go through every length to make that happen. It’s a driving force in his life. Damon doesn’t give a sh– about very much except his home, his brother, and his girl.”
