It’s okay not to be okay
The Bold Type opens with a greasy breakfast, prepared by Kat (Aisha Dee), to get Sutton (Meghann Fahy) out of bed as a cure for her hangover. Sutton says that she’s not partying more because of Richard’s (Samuel Page) new girlfriend. When she ends up having to style the woman for the Mandy awards, we see that she is definitely more affected by Richard’s new girl. She continues to party, but after realizing that people are noticing and it’s affecting her support for her best friend, she decides to deal with it later. She grabs Kat and they attend the awards ceremony even though she has to see Richard with his new woman.
Kat’s still struggling with her dreams about being with another woman. Before Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) returns, Kat decides to go out with some of the friends she got introduced to. At first, she’s apprehensive about the idea, but once she’s out, she falls right in with the crowd. During the fun of it all, she kisses another woman, but it doesn’t mean anything. Kat decides to tell Adena upon her return and it creates an awkward vibe between the two. They eventually talk about the situation and Adena tells her, “This curiosity that you have….it doesn’t just go away”.

Jane (Katie Stevens) is on a rocky high this week! She gets nominated for a Mandy Award for her empowering piece on Jacqueline (Melora Hardin). She gets offered a follow-up piece by another publication and while working on it, she uncovers that another woman was victim to the same man as Jacqueline. While preparing for the for the awards ceremony, Jane and Jacqueline have some encounters. While at the ceremony, Jane tells Jacqueline about the woman and that she may include it in her follow-up. Without Jacqueline’s verbal blessing, she includes the woman in her story. Jacqueline invites her in for a meeting where she offers Jane her position back! The fashion closet talks are back!
We got some highs and some lows in this episode, but our girls supporting each other hasn’t changed. Here is our The Bold Type roundtable:
Emily (@waverlyleigh) – Broadway enthusiast, watches too many TV shows, and dances for a living.
Kailee (@ALESSIASHAIR) – New Yorker learning the true New York way through the girls from the fashion closet.
Alex (@AlexxHerreraaa) – Dog mom, I stan Kadena, and Director/Producer in the making.
Sarah (@livinqhere) – Bubbly vegan with a love for music and New York City.
Thaís (@thaisaugustto) – Brazillian lover of tv shows, “What Sutton Brady would do?” is my mantra and illustration is my thing

1. Jane got a meeting with an editor after receiving her Mandy nomination. Do you think her popularity is typical of how people react to learning you’ve made a hugely successful move?
Emily (@waverlyleigh): I believe people do react that way when they find out someone made a successful move. Companies always want to grow and become more popular than they already are. With someone who recently got nominated for something big in the journalism industry, it can mean good things for them.
Kailee (@ALESSIASHAIR): I think that is is a huge part of it, which is exciting for people who have gotten nominations/won awards but it can be hard when people who have not been nominated feel underestimated. People should look more on the talent of someone rather than what they have won.
Alex (@AlexxHerreraaa): I mean if it did affect others to speak out their voices about the issues, Jane deserved it.
Sarah (@livinqhere): Definitely. People want what is popular and are willing to do pretty much anything to hop on the coattails of someone’s popularity.
Thaís (@thaisaugustto): Totally! Yes, when she failed nobody believed in her talent and when she was recognized by some, suddenly everyone is interested in her and her voice.

2. Kat kissed a girl, but it wasn’t Adena. Would you have advised her to tell Adena?
Emily: Kat was right for telling Adena. If my girlfriend kissed someone else while we were dating, I would want to know. It wouldn’t have been right for Adena and Kat to keep being them with that weight over their shoulders.
Kailee: I think that if she wants the relationship to succeed that is the only way. It is so important to be honest with your partner and not hide things.
Alex: I would have advised Kat to tell Adena. Communication is key in a relationship. Especially, if you want to work things out between the both of you.
Sarah: Yes, especially with them having communication problems in the past. They need to be open about things like this.
Thaís: I always think telling the truth is the best way to deal with these things, in a relationship talking about your feelings is the only way to make it work.

3. Adena told Kat that her curiosity wouldn’t go away. How do you think the two will move forward after Kat’s confessions?
Emily: The two will definitely stay in rough waters. Kat has never been with another girl, so that might affect how Adena wants to handle things in the future. Hopefully, Kat’s curiosity will start to fade in the future.
Kailee: I think that Adena is right. For anyone new to the dating field, there is so much to learn and so many questions you want to be answered. I think that they will be able to move forwards in the end.
Alex: I hope Adena understands Kat’s situation. We all know that this is Kat’s first time dating a woman. And we don’t know what she can and can’t do when Adena’s not around. I was in her shoes a while back and told my partner that I’m going drinking with some friends and told her that, “I might buy someone a drink later”. I didn’t know if she’d get jealous or not.
Sarah: They haven’t had a moment of smooth sailing in their relationship, it feels like. So, I’m not really sure. Will this be the end? I would like to see them just get to be them for a while.
Thaís: I don’t know, I hope they can move on and continue together because I love their relationship but at the same time it’s really a complicated situation I think their relationship will not be the same anymore.

4. Jacqueline offered Jane her job back at Scarlet. Are you glad that Jane decided to go back to Scarlet?
Emily: I’m so glad Jane is back at Scarlet. When she was there, she was in her place and that’s just where she belongs the most. When she wasn’t there, she hardly felt inspired and was constantly crashing down.
Kailee: I AM SO GLAD. Having Jane away gave me separation problems and I’m not even there! I think it will be good and I think that Jacqueline will be able to challenge her more now that they’ve had their time apart and she has seen all the work that Jane created.
Alex: I am super glad that Jane is back! She earned it a lot. Now the Closet Trio is back!
Sarah: YES! I love having the girls all together because they are in their element!
Thaís: Oh my God, yes, yes, and yes! I’ve been waiting for this moment in this season and I am so happy that this is really happening and in the best way, at the right moment and for the right reasons.

5. The show tackled the issue of sexual assault again. What are your thoughts on the way they handled it?
Emily: I thought they handled it very well. There are so many assaulters in the world who attack more than one person and get away with it. I think it’s important to show that nobody is alone when it comes to sexual assault.
Kailee: I think the show always does an amazing way of tackling tough topics. I think it was good to show how hard this topic is and how it should be handled delicately and that is exactly what they did.
Alex: I really liked how the article that Jane made, made an impact to other people and now that Jacqueline knows about the other victim, she collaborated with them to create a safe space for them. That could really help a lot of people so they could know that they’re not alone.
Sarah: I think it’s very raw and real, which means many people will be able to relate to it. I also believe that by covering issues like this, it will bring these problems to the table for more discussion.
Thaís: I love the way The Bold Type handled with the issues of everything they can tell all the faces of the theme, all the problematic parts and they can make us see the truth of this. I think is really very important to everyone.

6. The girls are always supportive of each other– it’s one of the reasons we love them so much. Which moment had you saying, “friendship goals”?
Emily: Definitely when Sutton was about to puke and Jane and Kat rushed into the bathroom to pull her hair back. Friendship goals at its finest.
Kailee: When Sutton and Kat ran all the way to see Jane. They have all been going through their own things, in this episode especially, but they always know to make time for each other. And of course BACK IN THE FASHION CLOSET! The best friendship scenes are in there.
Alex: The moment when Sutton and Kat came to Jane’s award night part is where I said that they are friendship goals! Man, these three are the best of friends.
Sarah: When Jane told them that they didn’t have to go to the gala because she put their feelings first, even though it was her big night. And then the girls deciding that they have to go support Jane because it’s her big night!
Thaís: Probably, in every episode but in this I think was when Sutton and Kat put their own problems in a box and went to the awards to support Jane, this is friendship goals!

7. With only a few episodes left in the season, what do you hope to see happen before season two ends?
Emily: I hope to see Kat and Adena start to heal again, and I want to see Sutton happy. She deserves to find happiness and I hate seeing her so broken. And I want to see what Jane is like back at Scarlet.
Kailee: I’m always on team musical episode. But I have been so interested in Sutton’s storyline this season. Not to mention HOW FUNNY she was this episode.
Alex: I want to know what will happen to Kadena, if Sutton and Richard will be back together, and if Pinstripe will be meeting Dr. James.
Sarah: For Sutton to find her happy place. Guy or no guy, I want her to be in a place in her life full of confidence and peace with the past.
Thaís: MORE SUTTARD! Ok, Sutton and Richard are amazing together and I hope we can see them working together!

We love a show that can properly discuss tough topics
Tiny Jane is back at Scarlet and we couldn’t be more excited to see where she goes from here. She’s still growing as a writer and her time away from Scarlet has given her a chance to find her voice. We loved how the show is continuing to discuss sexual assault and dig into how victims can feel about the stories being told. It is completely true that one voice can start a movement. We’ve seen it in real life and on screen, so it’s nice to see the realism behind the way these people decide to speak out.

Kat and Adena’s relationship continues to take so many hits. Some of them are for the better but this week’s hit was one that could create a distance between the two. We understand Kat’s feelings. If you’ve never really dated then it’s normal to want to explore your options in a completely new situation. It sucks that it’s happening after being in a relationship, but we hope they can move forward from this. We don’t want these two to break up, and they seem to be feeling the same. But how will they move forward? We can’t wait to find out.
Next week, Adena’s going to shock Kat with some news. Jane and Sutton going to have some words for each other when Jane finds out that Sutton’s been keeping a gun in their apartment. We can’t wait to see The Bold Type take on the gun control talk.
