Titans have found its Dick Grayson, the leader of the iconic superhero group and it’s Brenton Thwaites!
You can’t do a Teen Titans show without the iconic boy wonder Dick Grayson, who started as Batman’s sidekick Robin before he decided to become his own hero. While we’ve been getting casting news in the last few weeks for the other Titans characters, such as Raven (Teagan Croft) and Starfire (Anna Diop), now we finally know who will be bringing the legendary leader to life.
DC Comics announced today that Brenton Thwaites (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is set to play Dick Grayson in the live-action adaptation. Warner Bros. TV describes their take on Dick as followed:
“While most readers need no introduction to Dick Grayson, he’s described by the show as having once been Batman’s famous sidekick, Robin. After Dick’s parents were murdered during their high-flying circus act, Bruce Wayne became Dick’s legal guardian and trained him to fight crime beside him. But after years as part of the Dynamic Duo, Dick struggled to find his place outside the Dark Knight’s shadow. Finally striking out as his own man, he emerges as a leader, mentor and father figure to his new family, the Titans.”
DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns, who is an executive producer of the series, spoke about the casting of the 28-year old Australian actor in an official statement.
“Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have. Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman’s former protege and the Titans future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character.”
But that is not the only Titans news for the day. That Hashtag Show broke the news today that the show is currently casting the duo Hawk and Dove as recurring characters on the series. What is interesting about this report is that back when Titans were being developed over at TNT, the show was reportedly going to feature Hawk and Dove in that incarnation. The casting breakdown says the following:
“MOLLY Recurring Female (25-30) [Open ethnicity] Graceful master fighting machine. She straddles the world of being a thrill-seeking and do-gooding vigilante, along with being her crime fighting partner’s emotional anchor and caregiver. She loves him, but fears what he’s become…RECURRING GUEST STAR WITH SERIES REGULAR OPTION.”
That Hashtag Show is also reporting that Alan Ritchson (Smallville, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) and Rebecca Rittenhouse (Red Band Society, Blood & Oil) have been looked at for these roles. However, none of them have supposedly signed on, meaning that the romantic duo could end up being played by other actors.
The third character that they are looking to add a colleague for Thawties’ Dick Grayson, who in this version will be working as a detective during the day. The site revealed that Detective Amy Rohrbach, who in the comics works as a Bludhaven cop, will be recurring on the series.
“DET AMY ROHRBACH Supporting Female (25-35) [OPEN] She is the detective alongside Dick Grayson who knows more than she lets on. Pretty, has tattoos.”
With the potential addition of these characters, we will most likely have news soon on who will be playing them, as well as Garfield Logan a.k.a. Beast Boy. The show is set to start production in Toronto, Canada this fall. Johns is executive producing the series with Akiva Goldsman, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter.
“Titans explores one of the most popular comic book teams ever. It follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In the action-adventure series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes that includes Starfire, Raven and others.”
