It’s Hanna’s Turn at the Game, the Hunt is on for Jenna, Spencer Takes a Much Needed Time Out and the Hits Just Keep Coming!
On this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars entitled, “Hold Your Piece,” the Liar’s Lament forces another one of the PLLs take a turn in A.D.’s twisted game that has real life consequences. After a fashion blog accuses Hanna (Ashley Benson) of stealing the dress design that the senator’s daughter wore, she’s positive Jenna (Tammin Sursok) had something to do with it and the ladies focus on finding her. As Hanna works on clearing her name a creepy life-sized doll with her face shows up on her doorstep and forces her to fill Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) in on everything. He goes to investigate the Liar’s Lament in hopes to help the ladies and keep Hanna from destroying her career because of it. As Caleb looks for a way inside of the game, it sprays him with something that makes it hard for him breathe and lands him in the hospital.

Meanwhile Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Aria (Lucy Hale) team up to investigate Sydney (Chloe Bridges) hoping to find more information about Jenna and her connection to A.D. Sydney claims to no longer be into Jenna’s games, but Em and Aria bugged her phone. They overhear Sydney make a down payment for Jenna’s eye surgery with the donor listed A.D., short for ‘anonymous donor.’ Em and Aria confront her about it, but Sydney insists she’s not involved. She explains she oversees a large account with an anonymous identity, A.D. Elsewhere, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) goes with Marco (Nicholas Gonzalez) for a day away playing ping pong. She enjoys some much needed time away and she and Marco even share a kiss. But when Spencer stops to check on Caleb she finds Toby (Keegan Allen) devastated as Yvonne’s (Kara Royster) health took a tragic turn. There are many O.M.G. moments in this week’s episode. Here are the top five.

Hanna Marin meets the Hanna-quin, a petite mannequin with Hanna’s face sewn on her and hella creepy.
After the game’s stopped crying like a baby when Hanna had it, the PLL’s decide it must be her turn to play the Liar’s Lament. Hanna-logic leads her to believe keeping the game phone in her purse would work to keep Caleb from learning about A.D.’s latest twisted game. While he’s in another room, the game phone tells Hanna to answer the door and then there’s a knock. She hesitates for a second, afraid of what might be on the other side, Caleb rushes to the door and open it. They’re both unpleasantly surprised to find a mannequin with Hanna’s face sewn on it, a Hanna-quin. Of course, Caleb insists on knowing what’s going on so she explains the Liar’s Lament. They discover it even talks! It says to see the appendix for further instructions and Hanna believes she needs some type of book or manual. But later Hanna discovers It the doll’s actual appendix, so she cuts into her creepy replica. Inside, she finds a bag labeled ‘wear me’ with a super short dress inside that she’s supposed to wear to her investors’ meeting.
‘What? Like Simon Says?” – Caleb
“Yeah. Kind of…but meaner.” – Hanna.
Over the years, PLL has done some pretty freaking creepy things, but I think this Hanna-quin with Hanna’s face so obviously sewn on takes the cake. Whoever did sew the face on definitely isn’t into sewing or maybe can’t quite see what they’re doing…Jenna. It’s hilarious to see Hanna go full on Grey’s Anatomy on the mannequin to cut into its appendix. Honestly, who has a scalpel just laying around the house? O.M.G. and the thing even squirts some kind of red substance that looks like blood. A.D. sure went all out. The whole thing is just disturbing, but I kind of like it. Haha.
Aria and Emily get their spy on and discover Sydney seems to have a lot of secrets of her own.
After Caleb is able to locate Sydney, Emily and Aria go to track her down to see if she’s helping Jenna again or has a connection to A.D. They discover Sydney attended the charity ball where the senator’s daughter wore Hanna’s dress and wonder since she’s the anonymous source, could she also be the other shooter? Emily confronts Sydney while carrying a device that allows Aria, the now instant hacker to bug her phone. Sydney claims to have been at the Radley when Spencer was shot, that the message to Caleb and Mona (Janel Parrish) was a joke and she’s done with Jenna’s game. But then they overhear her make a deposit for some procedure at Vogel Vision Institute for Jenna. And when asked who the donation is from, she says “A.D.” for “anonymous donor,” and then she texts a blocked number “it’s done.” Em and a feisty Aria, who also picked up some fighting skills, ask Sydney about it. She says Jenna’s games have gotten too dangerous for her and claims the donation was from a client at her bank whose identity is unknown that just goes by A.D.
“Namaste, bitch.” – Sydney.
Nothing is ever a coincidence in PLL. There must be a reason the donor for Jenna’s procedure goes by the very same name as the Liars’ latest tormentor and is the name on the account Sydney oversees at her bank. Is Sydney’s anonymous donor, A.D., the same A.D. as the Liars? Makes me wonder if A.D. is who stole all the money from the Carissimi Group and that’s why the account Sydney oversees has so much money but chooses to remain anonymous as A.D. Perhaps, A.D. is the owner’s initials and the D in A.D. stands for DiLaurentis! It would be too much of a surprise. The DiLaurentis family definitely doesn’t have a shortage of secrets Then there’s the Jenna connection. Medical procedures are super expensive, so you know no one is going to shell out all the money without something big in return. It just has to be the same A.D.!
The Liar’s Lament turns into Toxic Candy Land and strikes back at Caleb for poking around the game.
After the creepy mannequin shows up, Hanna’s forced to explain A.D.’s game of ‘Simon Says, but meaner’ to Caleb. He heads over Spencer’s to investigate the Liar’s Lament hoping to keep Hanna from having to wear the short little number from A.D. to her meeting with the investors and offending them. He’s still working on the game when Spencer returns from her day away, And he’s lucky she is because when Caleb pops the church figurine off the board attempting to get inside the game a gas is emitted. It leaves him unable to breathe or talk, so Spencer calls 911 and texts Hanna about what happened. Thank goodness Caleb is alright from his encounter with Toxic Candy Land. Ironically, he does get Hanna out of wearing the A.D.’s dress to her meeting, but not how he expected. And because she didn’t complete her turn Hanna doesn’t get the next puzzle piece to the map.
“Do you remember that time you sprayed hairspray in my face? It was worse than that. I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t breathe. I, I couldn’t even think.” – Caleb.
“Well, I mean I couldn’t tell them I was poisoned by some toxic version of Candy Land.” – Caleb.
The promotional clip for this week’s episode teased a death, so when Caleb was sprayed with whatever it was from the Liar’s Lament and couldn’t breathe I almost had a heart attack. Thank goodness Spencer was there to call 911, but I cannot believe the two of them hadn’t really talked since they dated. Awkward. I have to wonder how long Caleb is going to be hospitalized and if whatever he was sprayed will have any lasting effects. Sure hope not, but I have a feeling not getting a puzzle piece is going to be the only consequence for Hanna not completing her turn.
What is supposed to be ‘Happily Ever After’ takes a tragic turn bringing Toby to his knees.
Yvonne finally wakes from a coma this week and asks for Toby. The doctors have him do a couple tests to see how she’s functioning and surprisingly she’s able to pass them all. One last test, Toby hands her a wedding ring and asks her if she’ll marry him today. Of course, she says yes, it’s Toby. Duh. Toby and Yvonne wed in her hospital room that day. They’re discussing honeymoon destinations and all the places they want to travel, but Yvonne’s eyes start to slowly close. By the time Toby senses something’s wrong, it’s too late. Yvonne’s wedding bouquet drops to the floor symbolizing her death. Toby’s devastated. In the hospital hallway, he falls to his knees and luckily Spencer’s there for him when he collapses.
“I’ve been waiting for days. I don’t want to wait anymore. I think we should do it. Today. Right now. What do you say?” – Caleb.
Obviously, I think Toby and Spencer belong together. But poor Toby. His bride dying on their wedding day is absolutely gut-wrenching. I cannot begin to imagine his pain. Finally, after Yvonne comes out of a coma with presumably no issues, they wed and what’s supposed to be the happiest day of his life turns into one of the most heartbreaking. The raw emotion of the scene when Toby collapses into Spencer’s arms is palpable. Keegan Allen is perfection. I can barely hold back the tears now just thinking about it again.
The surprises just keep coming. Aria returns home to an uninvited guest and Marco receives a special delivery.
Emily offers to take “first watch” keeping track of Sydney and Aria heads home. She walks in the dark apartment as she’s on the phone leaving a message for Ezra (Ian Harding). In the background, a dark silhouette slowly emerges. Maybe Ezra’s back from NYC or worse A.D.’s made a house call. Of all people, it’s Nicole (Rebecca Breeds) sitting alone in the dark in her apartment. That’s not creepy at all! While over at the Rosewood P.D. someone, most likely A.D., delivered an envelope for Marco with a severed finger inside. Now the question is who does it belong to?
I don’t know which is more disturbing. Nicole sitting in Ezra’s apartment alone in the dark or Marco getting the severed finger. They’re both super creepy. But for real why is Nicole in Ezra’s apartment? He’s supposed to be in NYC to help with her recovery. If not, where is he? Is Nicole looking for him and that’s why she’s there? Or maybe he finally told Nicole about Aria and his engagement and she’s come to confront her. So many unanswered questions. And there’s the severed finger. What if Ezra’s missing and it’s his? But the finger looked fairly decomposed so it has to be from a dead body or severed for some time. Maybe it’s from Mrs. D. or Mary Drake. I am sure we’ll find out soon.
FINAL VERDICT: The Liar’s Lament continues to wreak havoc for the PLLs and Caleb learns just how dangerous the game truly is. “Hold Your Piece” brings more secrets come to light and leaves us wanting more, as usual.
Again this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars takes us on a wild ride filled with drama, suspense, romance as well as heartache and as more secrets are unveiled we’re left with even more unanswered questions. Bryan Holdman penned an episode that takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotion. One minute we’re cheering as Yvonne comes out of the coma seemingly fine and then completely in awe of Toby’s suggestion they marry right away. While in the next minute, we’re completely shook by the Hanna-quin showing up on her doorstep. Director, Marta Cunningham does a great job taunting us with what’s on the other side by focusing first on Hanna and Caleb’s reaction and then showing the mannequin while slowly zooming in on its face so we see Hanna’s face has been haphazardly sewn on. Cunningham captures the raw emotion perfectly as Toby, devastated by Yvonne’s tragic death, collapses in the hospital hallway into Spencer’s arms. Alternating close-up shots of Spencer and Toby enhances the emotion and leaves us sobbing right along with them.

I loved Holdman giving us badass Aria this week, but honestly, it’s rather inconceivable for her to become a tech whiz and pick up hacking from Caleb in just a few hours. And I get she took a few karate classes, but when did she turn borderline ninja? There was a four-year time jump and we don’t know what the Liars were up to so perhaps Aria picked up these new skills then. How or wherever she acquired these new skills, I love it. I’m glad she and Emily decided to keep tabs on Sydney because I don’t think she’s being completely honest when it comes to Jenna and A.D. It’s too coincidental she oversees an account at her bank that goes by the name A.D. and nothing is ever a coincidence when it comes to this show. I guess we’ll soon find out.
