Tobias Menzies and Sam Heughan cheering on Caitriona Balfe as she walks to stage after the Outlander Season 1 part 2 Premiere in NYC
Outlander Stars dish on the darkness of the second half of the season and what they’re excited about for Season 2!
Starz rolled out the red carpet once again for the long-awaited return of ‘Outlander’ with a screening of the episode 1×09 “The Reckoning” along with much of the cast and executive producer Ron D. Moore. TVAfterDark was there to get the scoop on what to expect from the next 8 episodes as well as how preparations are going for Season 2. Over this 8 month long ‘droughtlander’ we’ve heard that the show will go to a much darker place, and as we’ve seen from trailers, Jamie and Claire’s marriage is tested as Claire’s friend, Geillis, becomes suspicious of Claire’s true origins.
Without any spoilers, Lotte Verbeek, who plays Geillis Duncan, talked with us about an intense scene between her character and Claire where a lot is revealed about who both of them are and how they might have more in common than Claire ever realized. Caitriona Balfe (Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser) spoke of her excitement over scenes in Part 2 where Claire bonds with her new sister-in-law Jenny as well as teases that Lotte delivers a bone-chilling performance in an upcoming episode. We’re all about ladies celebrating ladies and happy to know there is more of that to look forward to in new episodes!
The relationship between the Mackenzie brothers, Dougal (Graham McTavish) and Colum (Gary Lewis), becomes rocky in Part 2 as the two disagree on the politics of the time period. We’ll see how strained their relationship is in the opening episode of Part 2 as a result of Dougal collecting money for the Jacobite cause. While the on-screen relationship between the two men is contentious, McTavish and Lewis were all hugs and smiles during their interviews on the red carpet. Even earlier in the day, McTavish had tweeted he was out drinking with his big brother and told us how close all of the cast is as one big family on set.
Tobias Menzies shared with us how he gets into the mindset of Black Jack Randall, and when we thought that character couldn’t get any darker, readers of the book know there is much worse to come. We love to watch Menzies’ brilliant performance as two contrasting characters, Frank and Jack Randall, but he explained that (spoilers) he will not be portraying the role of Jack’s brother, Alex in season two of the series due to scheduling and technical reasons.
Speaking of Season 2, we tried our best to cajole some casting info from Sam Heughan when he spoke with us, neither confirming nor denying that anybody had been cast, but it seems we’ll have to wait just a bit longer before any casting news is revealed. Caitriona Balfe was most interested in seeing Comte St. Germain come to life on screen as well as find out who would be playing her daughter. Balfe has yet to screen test with any potential Brianna Randalls, but it was clear she was excited to get started on season two.
