We chatted with the cast of Lucifer during SDCC 2016, and Mom is a game changer
The one thing that every person we spoke to agreed on: Mom is a game changer. There wasn’t one person that didn’t talk about how much Tricia Helfer’s character changes things up for everyone. Lucifer and Amenadiel (obviously), but there will be other interactions that she has that will shake things up. Suffice it to say, Lucifer’s mom is going to really shake things up in season 2. Here’s what else we discovered when we sat down with Joe Henderson, Ildy Modrovich, Tom Ellis, Tricia Helfer, DB Woodside, Leslie-Ann Brandt, and Aimee Garcia at San Diego Comic Con.
The structure of season 2 will be similar to the last 4 or 5 episodes
Executive producer Joe Henderson said that there would be a case that would be the spine of the episode with mythological elements going on around it. “I like having a case to drive story. They give Lucifer a chance to explore the desires of humanity and how they reflect on himself…and while all this is happening all this inner character stuff can build on the sides.” In addition to adding a new character of faith to the show (Aimee Garcia’s Ella), we’ll also find out why Chloe is immune to Lucifer’s powers! Additionally, we may see her start to believe Lucifer is who he says he is.
“If she’s a good cop, she’s gonna look into it. That’s one of the really important things to us.” Joe Henderson, on whether Chloe will start to believe Lucifer is the devil

Lucifer’s mom will show us a new side of Lucifer
Now that Lucifer’s mom is a part of the equation, we’re going to see a new side of Lucifer. “We’ve stripped away a lot of the layers of Lucifer, and the veneer that he has,” says Ellis. “We get to see a new dynamic to Lucifer as we haven’t seen him before.” But will this effect his relationship with Chloe? “Right now he needs to sort out his own issues with her.” The “fish out of water” conceit that Lucifer got to experience in season 1 we now get to see Lucifer’s mother experiencing as well, which has been fun, but unfortunately for humanity, Lucifer’s mother doesn’t seem to share the same fascination with them that Lucifer has. “She’s angry, but she’s a loving mother at the end of the day that wants to be with her children,” says Tricia Helfer. Now that Lucifer’s mom is around, does this mean we’ll start to see other siblings, demons and relatives coming to town as well? “Watch this space,” says Ellis, with a coy smile. Stop teasing us this way, Tom! “All of the above. We haven’t shot past episode 3 and only get one episode ahead of time, but all of these things have been discussed.”
“Needless to say, Mom hasn’t always looked like this, and it’s quite… disturbing for Lucifer.” -Tom Ellis
Dance off???
Tom Ellis sings, DB Woodside dances, Aimee Garcia can apparently do a mean tango- dare we say… musical episode?? Ok, ok. Indy Modrovich was joking. But wouldn’t it be great?
Other characters will interact with Lucifer’s mom
Obviously Maze knows who Lucifer’s mother is, and while the other characters might not know her as Lucifer’s mother, they’ll certainly meet & interact with her this season.
The brothers have a different relationship moving forward
Amenadiel & Lucifer will get to explore a closer, more loving relationship in season 2. “There’s always gonna be tension because of the big brother-little brother relationship…That’s always gonna be there. But we’ll get to see them be a lot more loving.” Amenadiel’s priorities are shifting in season 2. Getting Lucifer back to hell isn’t really a huge priority: Mom is definitely the bigger, badder threat. Does Amenadiel get along with his mother? “I don’t think he ever had any problems with his mother, I just don’t think that he had much of a relationship with her,” so that’s something definitely worth exploring in season 2.
“I think he’s a one demon man.” -DB Woodside, on whether or not Amenadiel’s will start a relationship with someone else
Another light character to mix things up
Aimee Garcia’s Ella is a super smart woman of faith, a practicing Catholic who is very much a believer and speaks to the positivity of faith. She’ll follow Lucifer and Chloe onto crime scenes as a forensic scientist. What makes her character so intriguing for Lucifer? “She’s not confused by God, and Lucifer is completely confused by God.” She’ll also be a light, playful force on the show that has no boundaries whatsoever. While Lucifer is a playful to, Ella will contrast that by not being sinister about it.
“God is like this rock star who is inspiring people he’s never met, but he’s a crappy dad to his own kid. He has daddy issues and she loves his dad.” -Aimee Garcia, on why Lucifer finds Ella fascinating
