The Cast and EP Dish on The Originals 2×02 “Alive and Kicking”
The second episode of The Originals season two airs tonight and viewers have been teased from producers and cast members alike to a ‘Mikaelson Family Reunion.’ With such an exciting episode on the horizon, cast members, Daniel Gillies (Elijah), Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley) and Sebastian Roche’ (Mikael) and co-executive producer, Michael Narducci dished a little bit about what is next to come. We’ve gathered the latest interviews and previewed what they had to say. Take a look!

In an interview with THR, Daniel Gillies talks about a family war, romantic hardships and more.
“He’s wary,” the actor tells The Hollywood Reporter of Elijah’s suspicions. “Kol was certainly troublesome when he was around. The moment that Elijah becomes aware that Finn has made a return, Elijah will be suspicious that his mother is somewhere in the picture because Finn has a deep allegiance to [Esther].”
“There’s no denying that there’s something vulgar about Mikael and his pursuit to rid the world of his children, or so it seems, but I’m not certain that Klaus is much better, in terms of his morality.”
“A war is coming, whether it’s deeply emotional one or an immensely physical one, or both. A war is certainly looming on the horizon,” Gillies says.
“I’m particularly interested to hear what Mother has to say to her children, and by the way, I know very well what she says and it is pretty fascinating.”
As Gillies tells it, expect some distance between Elijah and Hayley — at least for now. “It almost certainly gets worse before it gets better, I’ll say that much, and it has to,” he says…“But, if anybody knows patience, it’s Elijah and he will wait until she is ready to allow him to either a) comfort her or b) be there for her.”

Daniel also spoke with TV Line about Elijah romance rumors this season 2.
“There certainly isn’t a romantic dynamic happening there,” Gillies explains to TVLine. “I don’t want the fans jumping to that conclusion.” Gillies adds that training Gia and the other vampires will also provide a welcome distraction from Hayley’s ongoing “identity crisis,” which will continue to drive a wedge between the brothers…
“Hayley has far more sway over Elijah than Klaus does; if she tells him to back off, he’ll listen,” Gillies says. “As much as Elijah wants to honor this idea he’s been striving for — the reunification of his family — at the moment, he really just wishes this woman peace.”
“Mikael has always seemed like a threat that Klaus and Elijah could handle if they were able to work together,” Gillies explains. “But Esther is a whole different kettle of fish. She’s not just the most powerful witch in New Orleans; she might be the most powerful creature in their entire dimension.”
“I think the viewers are going to be shocked, not only by parts of Tatia’s history, but by her history with Klaus and Elijah,” Gillies teases. “I absolutely adore Nina and I’ll take any chance I can to work with her.”

Daniel told EW about an impending war and Elijah’s curse.
“I think if there’s one thing he is it’s forgiving,” Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah, told EW. “I think it’s one of the most lovely things about Elijah. I don’t think he believes that she’s a monster at all. His capacity for empathy is enormous, and I think that that’s one of the great gifts that time has bestowed him with, but I think it’s also one of the curses as well.,,
“I wish there was more definition regarding what Elijah’s feelings are,” Gillies said. “I think the writers are still discovering the show, and I don’t think they have all the answers, nor should they at this point. There’s only so much universe they can supply from week to week and they’re doing a marvelous, marvelous job…
So how does human Elijah differ from the noble vampire fans know? “It’s an innocence,” Gillies said. “Speaking to Elijah’s great curse and blessing—this enormous sense of understanding—it comes directly from that love of innocence. From the moment we met him, even within The Vampire Diaries, he always had this adoration of Elena Gilbert, and understanding that the finite human life—as vulgar as it might look to someone like Niklaus—Elijah holds it within great reverence…
“Whenever protagonists are discussing violence to solve a problem, not just as a person and a new father, it sort of sickens me. And it probably sickens the writers too, but they know that that’s the way that these worlds work…”

E! Online spoke to Daniel and his co-star, Phoebe Tonkin about Elijah and Hayley’s relationship status.
“I wouldn’t call it cooling off,” Gillies told us. “Relationships require work, and sometimes they require space and time and healing….I like them together. I think they’re a sweet, dysfunctional, mismatched twosome who found each other in the storm and I love that about their love.”
“Hayley’s put up a bit of a wall and isn’t allowing Elijah to get past that,” Tonkin said. “Both of them are dealing with the situation very differently—Hayley’s being destructive and Elijah is being logical and she doesn’t like that. She wants everyone to be angry and wanting revenge…They’re both putting up walls and are being defensive.”
“Klaus is almost going to be her mentor in how to be a hybrid and vampire,” Tonkin said. “They still feel very hostile towards each other but they have a mutual respect because they both want their baby to come home.
Gillies said he was proud of the way that Elijah was able to put aside his own feelings and get Klaus to help Hayley.
“She’s pretty lost and doesn’t know who she is or where she fits in,” Tonkin says. “She can’t relate to the werewolves anymore even though they’re blood and the way her parents intended her to grow up. She’s going to start figuring that out while managing her new life as a hybrid.

Access Hollywood spoke to Daniel about the return of Esther, Hayley and what its like filming with babies.
“…I think that Elijah imagines in some sense – I would like to think that he imagines — that he would become, at the very least, a mentor of sorts, if not another father to this child. I think he really does wish both his brother and… the woman he loves, joy and peace.”
Elijah continues to put his loved ones above all, but does Daniel see a point where his character pursues his own desires? “Yeah, he will. This season more than ever,” the actor said. “And he does, but unfortunately the road to where you’re talking about is paved with a lot of difficulty and adversity and just… torture before he can reconcile himself with the idea of serving himself.”
“The mother’s the one who holds all the power. Isn’t that true of life as well? The mother’s the more frightening adversary right now, with regard to the parents. I suspect at this moment in time, she’s designed to be the most threatening creature in the universe of ‘The Originals,'” he said.
“I have had some baby time, but that’s about all I can say. I wish I could talk more, but yes, I have had some baby time,” he said.

The Originals’ co-executive producer, Michael Narducci, also spoke to Access Hollywood about reuniting the Mikaelson Family.
“Our hope was that this would be the season about the return of mother and father and as you now know, the return of the brothers as well,” Narducci said of the big Season 2 premiere reveal about Kol and Finn. “They’ve been displaced in these bodies and there is a lot of family stuff that we need to get out. I think that’s the big theme of this season is the past returning to haunt you and enemies who are even more dangerous because they know you intimately.”
“She [Davina] wants to disconnect that sire line, which by the way, is probably also important for fans of ‘Vampire Diaries’ because that would mean Stefan and Damon wouldn’t die either,” he continued.
“We’re gonna see Rebekah, we’re gonna see baby Hope and that’s gonna be an important thing,” the producer said. “As to what Esther’s plan for that baby is, Esther thinks that the baby died. Esther doesn’t know where Rebekah is. [Esther is] coming back with a definite agenda that we will start to see unpacked in Episodes 2 and 3….
“We’re really excited to get into where this family comes from, why they are the way they are, what are their relationships like, not only with their parents, but with one another, even back in the day, and how has that lead them to be divided as they are,” Narducci said.
“I think that they have one of the coolest reasons possible for wanting to get to know Cami and at first you’re going to think it’s one thing and then, when you find out what it really is, you will be impressed,” he said.
