ICYMI: Crisis On Earth-X‘s historical significance, Black Lightning teasers and photos, an interview with The Punisher‘s Jon Bernthal, and more!
As usual, we have a ton of superhero-related news to get to this week in Superhero After Dark. But before we get to that, be sure to get caught up in our previous issue.
The CW recently had the largest superhero crossover event yet on their network. Titled Crisis On Earth-X, it featured the superheroes of all four of their shows teaming up to fight Nazis on an Earth with alternate history. Fighting Nazis on Earth-X has a large historical significance in DC Comics. If you missed our coverage of Crisis On Earth-X, be sure to check out Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 of our special crossover roundtables!
The DC Comics-based series Black Lightning, which will also be airing on The CW, recently had a new promo released to tease the upcoming show. If that isn’t enough, The CW also released a series of promotional photos and a teaser.
Justice League continued to perform well internationally during Thanksgiving Week. Unfortunately for Warner Bros., it was outperformed domestically by Disney•Pixar’s Coco. In more positive DC news, Joe Manganiello shared a first look at Deathstroke.
Over on Hulu, Marvel’s Runaways currently has three episodes available. Fans of the series were given a behind-the-scenes look at Old Lace. In other Marvel-related news, Rosario Dawson and Eric Andre broke up. Fans of Netflix’s The Punisher might be shocked to learn that Jon Bernthal almost turned down the role of Frank Castle.
“Fully candid, being part of a superhero franchise was not something that I really had an ambition towards; it wasn’t really on my radar.”
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. recently started its fifth season. Dove Cameron joined the cast. If you’re still wondering why the show is headed to space in season five, then EW may have the answers you’re looking for.

Hot Topic: Reign attacks the Girl of Steel and Warner Bros. restructuring DC Films division
All of the DC Comics-based shows on The CW went on winter hiatus this week. Supergirl‘s midseason finale, in particular, has made waves. Reign (Odette Annable), the Kryptonian Worldkiller, made her first appearance, and gave the Girl of Steel (Melissa Benoist) a serious fight, leaving Kara Zor-El in critical condition.
Warner Bros. has decided to restructure its DC Films division after the disappointing performance of Justice League. The movie is the lowest grossing film in the franchise by about $100 million.
“This is something that Jon [Berg] approached me about six months ago, and he expressed his goal was to ultimately be a producer at the studio.”
‒ Toby Emmerich (President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group)
Despite the poor performance, Warner Bros. doesn’t consider the film a failure since it introduced audiences to both Ezra Miller as The Flash and Jason Momoa as Aquaman.
Guess Who: Alice Eve joins the cast of Netflix’s Iron Fist for its second season
Alice Eve, known for her roles in Star Trek: Into Darkness and Black Mirror, has joined the cast of Iron First for season 2 of the Netflix original series. It’s currently unknown who she’ll be playing.
“We are very excited to have an actress of Alice’s stature join the cast of ‘Marvel’s Iron Fist.’ Her exceptional talent brings an intrigue and danger to her character unlike anyone else.”
‒ Jeph Loeb (head of Marvel’s television division)
TVAD Writers Room: Roundtables for the midseason finales of Supergirl and Arrow, a Crisis On Earth-X editorial, and a review and roundtable for the latest episode of The Gifted
It was another busy week for the writers at TVAD.
Supergirl introduced its season 3 villain Reign this week and left our roundtable guests emotionally pained and dying for whatever comes next in Kara Zor-El’s story. Not everything was loved in The CW’s other DCTV shows. Arrow‘s midseason finale had a lot going for it but parts of it didn’t work for all of our roundtable guests. Nazis as villains have always been contentious and their usage in The CW’s Crisis On Earth-X crossover event was no exception. So TVAD took a closer look at the use of Nazis and their place in the Crisis On Earth-X crossover event.
Fox’s The Gifted was also met with somewhat mixed reactions this week. “outfoX” received an ok score in the review for the episode. The episode fared better with our roundtable guests, however.
Interviews: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast discusses the premiere episodes
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also went to space in its season premiere. The cast recently spoke with TVLine about the premiere episodes.
“I think that, at first, she doesn’t believe it. She’s just genuinely, ‘No, I’m literally not powerful enough, I don’t know what you’re talking about.'”
‒ Chloe Bennet (Daisy)
