Hot Topic: HBO’s Watchmen adaptation and Mon-El’s shocking return on Supergirl
Damon Lindelof is no stranger to developing highly successful TV shows. Despite being known for shows such as ABC’s Lost and HBO’s The Leftovers, Lindelof is also a huge fan of comic books and superheroes. Now HBO has hired him to adapt Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen as a TV series. DC Comics’ Watchmen has previously been adapted to live-action by Zack Snyder in 2009. While Lindelof is a fan of both Marvel and DC Comics, he’s interested in exploring the darker side of superheroes:
“Watchmen – it was dangerous. And you can’t be dangerous for dangerous’ sake, but the reason that I’m doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows.”
It’s still too early for casting news or when this TV adaptation is expected to arrive on our screens, but Lindelof is interested in being true to the source material.
Mon-El (Chris Wood) returned to The CW’s Supergirl this week, and his reintroduction left viewers with more questions than answers. After being forced to leave Earth last season, Mon-El’s pod was pulled into a wormhole and he found himself in the 31st century. Mon-El, along with others from the 31st century, were discovered on a ship that had arrived on Earth 12,000 years earlier. One such passenger was none other than Imra Ardeen (Amy Jackson), Mon-El’s wife and an alien from Titan. In the comics, Imra is known as Saturn Girl and is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
Guess Who: The Gifted gains a new mutant
Fox’s The Gifted has continued to explore the ambiguity of having superpowers and it doesn’t appear to be changing course anytime soon. Skyler Samuels has been cast in a recurring role as a mutant named Esme. Emse is a “refugee mutant with telepathic abilities and a mysterious past.”
TVAD Writers Room: Supergirl introduced Reign, The Flash gave backstory for the DeVoes, and The Gifted continued to blur the lines between good and evil
This week Supergirl saw the return of Mon-El and the introduction of Reign. “Wake Up” packed a truly Kryptonian emotional punch. The Flash gave viewers backstories of Clifford and Marlize DeVoe, who were deemed to be some of the most interesting villains since Eobard Thawne in season 1. Finally, on Fox’s The Gifted, “threat of eXtinction” continued to explore the lines between good and evil.
Rumor Has It: Hint about Luke Cage’s return and possible second season of The Punisher
The second season of Netflix’s Luke Cage recently finished filming. Actress Gabrielle Dennis, who plays Tilda Johnson in the series, posted a series of Instagram photos confirming that the second season recently had a wrap party. While it’s still unclear exactly when season 2 will premiere, the second season of Jessica Jones is premiering sometime in 2018, and the second season of Luke Cage will likely follow it.
Now that The Punisher has finally premiered on Netflix, speculation has begun about whether the series will be renewed for a second season. With Disney set to launch their own streaming service in 2019 for all future Marvel movies and shows, Netflix is expected to retain their current Marvel shows. The Punisher received mixed reviews from critics but it’s highly unlikely that Netflix won’t want to renew the series as they will be unable to create any additional Marvel-based shows.
Interviews: Annie Wersching talks “Gross Flaky Guy,” Runaways creator discusses the adaptation, Michael Nathanson discusses his character, and The Punisher showrunner talks season 2!
Marvel’s Runaways star Annie Wersching recently discussed the series. She compared the Church of Gibborim to Scientology and revealed her humorous nickname for the “mysterious man.” According to her, a more accurate name for him is “Gross Flaky Guy.” Wersching discussed all that and more in her interview EW. The creator of the Runaways comic, Brian K. Vaughan, also recently discussed Hulu’s adaptation of the series. He has high praise for the series and its take on his original characters. The first three episodes of Marvel’s Runaways can currently be streamed on Hulu.
Michael Nathanson also recently opened up about his character’s fate in the first season of Marvel’s The Punisher. His character, Sam Stein, met a gruesome and untimely end before the end of the season. Needless to say, he had a lot to say about his character, his fate, and more in his interview with EW. Steve Lightfoot, the showrunner for The Punisher, also talked with EW about the first season of the show, the complexity of making a series about American identity, the potential of a second season, and more. The first season of The Punisher can be streamed on Netflix.
Coming Soon: New Harley Quinn animated series!
Harley Quinn is probably best known as a lover and accomplice of DC Comics’ the Joker. She was featured in live-action for the first time in last year’s Suicide Squad and was portrayed by Margot Robbie. Now, she’s getting her own animated series on DC’s digital streaming service. The series will follow Harley after she’s ended her relationship with the Joker and will involve her attempting to become the “criminal Queenpin of Gotham City.” The series will consist of 26 episodes.

What’s Happening Next Week: New “Crisis on Earth-X” and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 trailers!
The CW’s huge crossover event for its shared universe will be airing next week. Titled “Crisis on Earth-X,” the crossover will air over two nights and will throw our favorite heroes into a fight against evil versions of themselves from Earth-X, a parallel Earth where the Nazis won World War II. Unfortunately for fans of J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), the character won’t be appearing in the crossover event. Despite J’onn not being a part of the event, many of the other characters from the Arrowverse will be involved in the four-part story. To show off some of the action, The CW released a full trailer for the event. “Crisis on Earth-X” will air on November 27th and 28th.
The fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be premiering on ABC on Friday, December 1st. With many new characters and plotlines in store for the team, we finally have a full trailer for the season. The fifth season will premiere with a special two-hour event starting at 8 PM EST.
