Things got a little more than crazy in this two-hour series premiere as we discovered Ryn isn’t your typical mermaid!
Freeform treated us to a two-hour premiere event for their new show, Siren and we couldn’t have been more excited! Not only were we introduced to mermaid Ryn, (Eline Powell) but we are already half in love with selfless and caring Ben (Alex Roe). When Ryn comes to the shores of Bristol Cove looking for her missing sister, she immediately has us intrigued. This is clearly her first time on land and she has no idea of the dangers she faces. We aren’t just talking from the government who is holding her sister, either. Ryn doesn’t even seem able to speak English, or any other kind of language for that matter. This could prove difficult, even for Ben, who is doing his best to help her out.

Ben and his girlfriend Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) aren’t the only ones trying to do what’s best for Ryn. A wise woman of the town, Helen (Rena Owen) does her best to protect Ryn as well. But not everyone seems to think good things of mermaids. Xander (Ian Verdun) seems pretty angry about the creatures, especially since Ryn’s sister tried and almost succeeded in killing his friend. Yikes! Things in this town are heating up fast! Will Ryn be able to find her sister? Will Xander find out about who Ryn really is? How will Ben continue to protect Ryn?
Let’s meet our roundtable guests and break it down!
Athena (@tinygymshoes) – Mother of a sweet one year old and gym junkie on the side!
Ashley (@twister8291) – Teen who watches way too much tv, games too much, and reads all the teen fantasy books in Barnes N Noble.
LaShonda (@HQ_Klaroline) – Life flight pilot nurse, Klaroline enthusiast, and lover of mermaids!
Lauren (@Young_Dryas) – Seeker of wisdom and lover of mermaids!
Calli (@CalliThomas4) – Studying to be a nurse, but wishing I could be a mermaid!

1. What do you think the government facility wants with the mermaids and how do they even know about them?
Athena (@tinygymshoes): I think the government already knew about the mermaids in the area and were actively trying to capture them for experiments and keep them out of the public eye. After all, who knows how people would respond if they knew mermaids existed, right?
Ashley (@twister8291): The government facility must be trying to find a way to make other people into mermaids. My guess would be Ben’s father has told the government about the mermaids and perhaps he works with the government!
LaShonda (@HQ_Klaroline): I believe the government knows the back story to Ben Pownall’s family and that the mermaids hold a serum of some sort within their body. Maybe antibodies for a cure? If the government is aware of their existence, they’ll stop at nothing to trap them using any means necessary!
Lauren (@Young_Dryas): I don’t know exactly, but I’m sure it’s nothing good. It’s clearly not anything they want to get out either!
Calli (@ThomasCalli4): It wouldn’t surprise me if they were trying to find a way to turn them into weapons.

2. Do you think Xander will end up joining Ben in helping Ryn, or will he try to harm her instead?
Athena: I think Xander will start out trying to find Ryn and whether that is harming or exposing her to the town. But, I also think when and if he sees how obsessed he’s gotten, he will try to help her.
Ashley: Xander, I got bad vibes from. He will definitely try to hurt Ryn. I feel like he will be the type of character who will try to find information and expel it into the world.
LaShonda: I’m positive Xander will help Ben with Ryn, they have a history of friendship. But only after witnessing something Xander knows is wrong and shouldn’t have laid his eyes on.
Lauren: I have a feeling that Xander is not going to be one of the good guys. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he portrayed himself as one so he could get close to Ryn in order to harm her. The relationship between Ben and Xander is going to make a severe shift I think.
Calli: As much as I would like to say Xander will end up on the good side of things, the attitude he has shown so far says different. I get the distinct feeling of greed from him too. If he thinks he can make money off exposing or harming Ryn, he is definitely going to do it.

3. Was there a moment you thought Ryn was going to kill Helen?
Athena: I did think she was going to kill Helen. You have a mermaid, who probably has never been out of water before, or interacted with humans. Ryn is in a strange new place and is used to hunting underwater. It wouldn’t surprise me if she just needed a second to remember Helen was trying to help her.
Ashley: That ending, I was straining my eyes to see if that knife Ryn was holding had blood on it. I have a feeling Helen is also a big character to the show Siren because of the way Ryn seemed attracted to her.
LaShonda: In that moment when Ryn grabbed Helen, I for sure thought she would tear into her. It’s in her nature to be defensive, especially given what happened to Ryn’s sister. She knows nothing of the human race.
Lauren: There was a brief moment I thought Ryn was going to end Helen. But I think a part of her knows Helen only wants to help her. Ryn is just defensive due to being in a strange place. Who can blame her?
Calli: I would like to say no, but I did get a little tense there. Ryn is in unfamiliar territory and is kind of like a cornered animal out of the wild. If those instincts take over and she can’t control herself, that’s it.

4. Ryn kills her would-be attacker without a second thought. Do you think this was because her instincts took over, or she knew what she was doing?
Athena: I’m absolutely sure it was instinct for Ryn. As humans, we evolved. We don’t need to hunt for our food anymore because we have supermarkets. We usually aren’t in dangerous scenarios. As a mermaid, it would seem, nothing really changes underwater. So I imagine if Ryn was ever attacked, killing would be second nature.
Ashley: Going by what Helen said to Ben, her instinct is to kill. Even though she’s not in water, she still has that predator in her. Kind of like a pet, they still have their natural instincts. You can’t take that out of them.
LaShonda: Her instincts took over. He was going to harm Ryn and it’s in their nature to destroy man. She sensed harm, I know for sure Ryn wasn’t luring him.
Lauren: I definitely think it was a case of self-preservation. Like I said, Ryn is in a strange place, so her senses are going to be on high alert. The second she felt danger, she reacted without thinking. Not that she was wrong.
Calli: I would have to say it came down to self-preservation. Ryn was put in a situation that she felt was kill or be killed. It easily could have been. She did what she had to in order to survive.

5. Why do you think Ryn attempted to hurt Ben underwater when she seemed alright with him in her human form?
Athena: I think Ryn attacked Ben because she was in her strongest form. On land, Ben has the upper hand. Underwater, Ryn does. She’s incredibly quick, focused, and knows how to attack her prey. Perhaps turning into a mermaid brings back all of her strongest instincts and she forgot Ben was a friend rather than foe.
Ashley: I have two thoughts on why Ryn attempted to hurt Ben. My first thought is what Helen said. When she is in the water, she sees everything in the water as prey. Her instinct is to kill. My second thought is she was scared to show her true form to Ben.
LaShonda: During that time Ryn was in her mermaid form, which she’s highly defensive in. Ryn wasn’t aware of what was happening in the water and her instincts took over.
Lauren: Part of what happened was that Ryn’s instincts once again took over. But I think another part is that she has been put through so much in such a short amount of time that her mind is just in overload. She can’t process everything that’s happening.
Calli: If Ryn had been able to stop and get her bearings, I don’t think she would have attacked Ben at all. Everything was just happening so fast and Ryn probably felt Ben’s emotions rolling off him as well.

6. Do you see a love triangle forming between Ben, Ryn, and Maddie?
Athena: I do see a love triangle! Ben seemed captivated by Ryn while Ryn seemed interested in Maddie towards the end of the second episode.
Ashley: I see a love triangle all right! First episode was love between Ben and Maddie, but now I can tell it’s going to be Ben and Ryn, with Maddie being pushed out by Ben.
LaShonda: I foresee a rift coming between all three as Ryn will fall for Ben. This will cause Maddie to drift away. No pun intended!
Lauren: There is definitely going to be a love triangle! But, isn’t there always? Ben was captured by Ryn before he ever heard her siren song. There is a genuine curiosity in Ryn about Ben as well. Maddie is going to end up pushed to the wayside.
Calli: Definitely! Maddie seems like the type that won’t stand in the way, though. She will see there is something deep going on between Ben and Ryn and bow out. Maddie may even sense it before they do.

7. What are your overall thoughts of the first two episodes?
Athena: I loved the first episode and it captured me enough to watch the second. The only thing that may have been a little too much was throwing family drama into the first episode with Ben’s mother paying him a visit. It started out great with just Ben missing an event. You got a small taste of what his family was like. Overall, I can’t wait to see the next episode!
Ashley: The first episode I thought I wasn’t going to like it. The second episode made me want more and I was very disappointed when the credits came on. I don’t like cliffhangers. I just can’t wait to see how everything turns out in the season! So many questions need answers!
LaShonda: I honestly loved every minute of the show. It’s not often you find a show that will reel you in like this. I seriously hope this show won’t be going away anytime soon.
Lauren: It was absolutely amazing and overshot all of my expectations. There’s nothing about it that we have seen before and I think it was needed! Can’t wait for next week!
Calli: Well, if I saw one more zombie or post-apocalyptic show I was going to scream, so this was perfect from the beginning. But it really did shock me with how well done it is. I’m excited to see more!

Final Verdict: The opening episodes were amazing and we want more, with a side of romance please!
We are only two episodes in, but the writing in this show already has us hooked! Pun intended! The characters have captured our attention and we can’t wait to see the different directions they will go in. Everything was pieced together well and obviously thought out. We have so much to learn about Ryn and her sister. There are so many unanswered questions already, and watching to find out how they get answered is half the fun! Ryn has come to land for the first time and with her she has created a whole new genre of television and we are here for it!

While this is a new show and we expect questions, there seems to be a lot. We got two episodes and absolutely no answers. But there are enough questions to last us a lifetime. It would be great to know something about why the government is interested in mermaids after all these years. Or how they came to capture Ryn’s sister. It was also a little bothersome that Ryn named herself based on a cartoon. There isn’t any type of mermaid language that gives Ryn an actual name? There had to be something her people call her when she is underwater. Speaking of, where are her people? If there even are any, we would like to know.
Overall, it’s pretty clear this show is carving out a brand new place for itself. We have never been given the opportunity to explore mermaids in this sense before and we are excited to see it happening now! Next week, the local police are going to be pointing some fingers at Ryn as Xander continues to search for Chris. We can’t wait to see how Ryn handles the cops and who is going to come through to help her out! We’re still on the fence about Xander, so any story line involving him has our interest as well!
