Ryn can’t stay on land much longer, but she may not have to!
Siren 1×04 “On the Road” on Freeform left us wondering where things will go from here! Ryn (Eline Powell) was struggling to stay on land, even with Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) doing everything in their power to help her. But the good news was that both Chris (Chad Rook) and Ryn’s sister, Donna (Sibongile Mlambo) were able to escape together. While it was great to see Donna escape and be reunited with her sister, we have to wonder how far the government is going to let them get. Then there is the whole other matter of Ryn and Donna not being able to stay on land for long periods of time. We’re left wondering if there is some other way around this. Especially since there is such suspicion around Helen (Rena Owen) being a mermaid herself and being on land for so long.

The draw between Ben and Ryn seems to be at an all time high in this episode as well. Then there is the bond between Chris and Donna that has also developed. It seems safe to assume this is because of Ryn and Donna being able to communicate and draw people to them with their siren songs. But there just seems to be something a bit deeper between Ryn and Ben and Chris and Donna. With the mermaids finding their way back to the water, will Ben, Chris, and the others ever see them again? What could bring them back to land?
Let’s meet our roundtable guests and break it down!
Athena (@tinygymshoes) – Mother of a sweet one year old and gym junkie on the side!
Ashley (@twister8291) – Teen who watches way too much tv, games too much, and reads all the teen fantasy books in Barnes N Noble.
LaShonda (@HQ_Klaroline) – Life flight pilot nurse, Klaroline enthusiast, and lover of mermaids!
Brigida (@domominreader) – Portuguese reader by day, dreamer by night. Fangirl all the time!
Lauren (@Young_Dryas) – Seeker of wisdom and lover of mermaids!

1. Why do you think Chris is so protective of Donna?
Athena (@tinygymshoes): I think Chris is protective over Donna because they were both in the military compound and escaped together. No one else he knows has gone through what they did.
Ashley (@twister8291): Both Chris and Donna have been in the same place. They both seem pretty beat up and bloodied so they both can relate! They really needed to count on each other to survive.
LaShonda (@HQ_Klaroline): It could be the government was making Chris sick and using Donna’s extracted spinal fluid to see what could happen. If that’s the case, maybe he feels linked/loyal to her?
Brigida (@domominreader): I think he can feel that she suffered somehow. So he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to her.
Lauren (@Young_Dryas): I think they have a connection that is going to prove as deep as the one between Ben and Ryn. Chris clearly felt something the moment he saw Donna that had him helping her escape.

2. Is it possible that Helen is also a mermaid? If so, how has she stayed on land all this time?
Athena: I don’t think she’s a mermaid, but I do think she was relating to Ryn so she felt more comfortable. But if she was a mermaid, it would make sense, because they mentioned the longer you stay on land, the longer you’re able to stay without having to go back in the water.
Ashley: Yes! I was screaming! Helen said they can stay out of water longer with each transformation. I would guess she has transformed so many times after all the years, she hardly needs to go into the water!
LaShonda: I’m going to say its extremely possible. I could be wrong but Helen seems to connect with Ryn and understands her. Given her age, she could have adapted over the years to the pain the change brings.
Brigida: I think it is. Trial and error is my guess. She said that after a couple of times on land mermaids start getting used to it. So if she was a mermaid, she must have tried a couple of times coming to land to get used to the environment.
Lauren: I think Helen was dropping some serious hints that she is a mermaid. Or was. I’m kind of wondering if she has found a way to not be one anymore.

3. Clearly no one in the facility was really trying to help Chris. So what exactly did they want from him?
Athena: I’m thinking they were extracting fluids from Donna and may have wanted to experiment on Chris with them.
Ashley: Towards the end they said they would be coming back for him. I think they’re still trying to see the difference between his DNA and Donna’s. Maybe Chris has something really wrong with him, and they’re seeing if mermaid DNA will heal him.
LaShonda: The government is holding illegal testing. They know they have to get rid of Chris and all the other evidence. By any and all means necessary!
Brigida: Maybe shut him up so he won’t share info about mermaids? If they wanted him dead they would’ve probably killed him already.
Lauren: I still haven’t figured that part out yet. But I am sure they aren’t going to be willing to just let him walk away.

4. Do you think Ben wants to keep track of Ryn because she has lured him in? Or is there a deeper connection?
Athena: I think that Ben wanted to keep Ryn safe since they have established a relationship. There is a sense of trust between the two.
Ashley: Both. I think she has lured him in, but there has been a deep connection ever since the start.
LaShonda: I do believe the connections lie deeper, and Ben wants to make sure she is safe. For both his piece of mind, and to study her habitat.
Brigida: I think both Ryn and Ben got attached to each other in the end. So he doesn’t want to lose her. By keeping track of her he has some part of her with him.
Lauren: There is definitely a deeper connection between Ben and Ryn. It may have started off because of Ryn luring Ben with her siren song. But there is something else going on between them.

5. Now that Ryn has found Donna and they returned to the water, where do you think the show will go from here?
Athena: I think Ben will venture out to find the tracker he gave Ryn and perhaps run into the mermaids again. Probably run into trouble with the military while out at sea now that they’re aware he is involved.
Ashley: It really felt like the ending. I saw this series only has 10 episodes the first season? We will see more with Helen and her story and what the military wants from Chris. Hopefully we see more mermaid action. I have a feeling Ryn will visit a lot.
LaShonda: I think Ryn and her sister Donna will go back to what they know is their home. The show won’t stop with the sisters. They will be back, but at the hands of the government!
Brigida: I think both Donna and Ryn are coming back for sure. More information about Ben’s family and mermaid killing will come to the surface.
Lauren: This definitely isn’t the last we’ve seen of Ryn or Donna. I just hope that Ryn will be able to stay on land a little longer and with less pain involved next time!

6. What do you think is really going on with Doctor Abbott?
Athena: Doctor Abbott seems to actually care about the well-being of Donna. Despite working at the military compound, he will eventually end up coming to the aid of the mermaids.
Ashley: I have no clue. I really didn’t think anything out of the ordinary was going on with Doctor Abbott. Other then he has a good memory.
LaShonda: I’m betting Doctor Abbott knows about mermaids and is piecing the parts together.
Brigida: He might know about mermaids as well.
Lauren: There is definitely something shady going on with Doctor Abbott. I have thought that from the moment he came to check on Ryn when Ben first found her. He definitely knows about the mermaids and I don’t think anything good is going to come out of it.

7. Why do you think Maddie would be intimate with Ben knowing Ryn was in the next room and would probably catch them. Is she jealous?
Athena: I’m guessing she was comfortable with Ryn as well as thinking that Ryn doesn’t understand human contact. Or meaning behind contact. Although, Ryn has proved to be extremely intelligent.
Ashley: I don’t think she’s jealous. It felt like Maddie would be ok if it was Ryn and Ben. They both laughed when Ryn came in. I feel like Ryn felt awkward and a little upset, by the way she walked out.
LaShonda: I wouldn’t say Maddie is jealous, just a free-spirited person.
Brigida: I think Maddie is aware that Ryn still has a lot to learn. So it wouldn’t be such a big problem if Ryn caught them in an intimate moment.
Lauren: That was really weird. I’m not sure if Maddie was jealous, but I definitely think Ryn was upset after catching them. I’m not sure what’s going to happen between all of them, but I can’t wait to find out!

Final Verdict: What’s going to happen if our mermaids have returned to their home in the water?
We won’t have much of a show if the mermaids are back in the water safe and sound. So, this means there will be something to draw them back out. The mystery of it all has us hooked. These writers clearly know what they’re doing with these characters and their stories! We are finding it easy to fall in love with each and every character, including Ben’s parents. We’re also pretty intrigued about these two and their relationships as well. The back stories of each character are keeping us coming back too! This has definitely proven to be our kind of show!

But we do have a question or two. If Ryn and Donna made their way back to the water already, that leaves us a bit unsure of what will happen next. We’re sure we haven’t seen the last of the government even though their facility caught fire. But will they be able to draw Ryn and Donna back out of the water? We would imagine if the mermaids were that easy to find, the government would have gotten a hold of them long before now. Even when they had Donna, it was only because she had been caught in a net and came to the surface herself. So we’re a little lost here.
Next week there seems to be some suspicious fishing activities going on. Ben is going to take it upon himself to investigate. We’re sure this is going to lead to some complications and Ben is sure to run into trouble. Decker is going to raise the stakes and show just how far he is willing to go in order to get Donna back. This will lead to us seeing just how far Decker’s reach goes. It’s sure to be exciting and promises to keep all of us on the edge of our seats
