Grab your moisturisers: ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guys’ is getting revamped on Netflix!
You heard that right. Entertainment Weekly reported that the retro Bravo hit ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guys‘ is getting a beauty makeover. Who from? That’s from now-TV giants Netflix. Previously, Netflix had proven its success in original programming including ‘Stranger Things‘, ‘Daredevil‘ and ‘Jessica Jones‘. Now, Netflix has gone from powerhouse to mega super-generator.
Henceforth, the show has been a cultural boom and nostalgic icon. With an impressive Emmy back-catalogue, ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guys’ was a much-beloved show. Known for its charismatic hosts and unique charm, it won over a fanbase. And now, with a statement from Netflix producers and officials, it reads:
“In a time when America stands divided and the future seems uncertain, a team of five brave men will try to bring us closer together with laughter, heart, and just the right amount of moisturizer. The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye is back and ready to Make America Fabulous Again. With a new Fab 5 and the show’s toughest missions to date, Queer Eye moves from the Big Apple to turn the Red States pink — one makeover at a time.”
What Was All the Fuss About?
Firstly, Bravo’s hit focused on a “Fab Five” of New York based style experts. In their typically boisterous fashion they would offer makeovers to “hapless” straight men. Immediately, it was a hit with viewers, and one that nobody really expected. But it also spawned a new wave of shows — all about makeovers. And and all about looks.
Whilst EW reports that Netflix are looking to cast a new “Fab Five”, there are reports that the original Fab Five will have some involvement with the new series. And it’s looking green-lit, as Netflix has already gone ahead and ordered eight episodes. Therefore, it gives a sense of confidence that it will likely be successful. With the way Netflix has shone through 2016 and probably 2017, we can’t really argue against that.
In addition, boasting GLAAD honours as well as Emmy honours, ‘Queer Eye’ was not just known for its cultural impact as it was for its impact upon the LGBTQ community. In an earlier interview with EW, Marc Leonard explained:
“Queer Eye impacted LGBT representation on TV in that it was the strongest, if not the first, representation of LGBT people bringing their special talents to the table and making a positive impact in straight people’s lives. We saw these strong, colorful personalities embraced for their unique abilities. This is a markedly different take compared to most prior representations of gays on TV that featured LGBT people living solely in isolated gay worlds.”
