The Archie Comics universe is expanding on The CW with a potential Sabrina: The Teenage Witch spin-off series!
The CW has become the home of several comic book and superhero television properties over the last couple of years. The network features Greg Berlanti’s Arrowverse show,s the Vertigo series iZombie, and recently got into business with Archie Comics this past season.
Riverdale, based on the Archie Comics universe, was an instant hit in the last TV season and was the only new series to get a season renewal from The CW. However, it looks like the network is getting ready to expand the Riverdale universe with another iconic character.

Warner Bros. TV and The CW announced today that the people behind Riverdale are officially developing a new Sabrina: The Teenage Witch series for the 2018-2019 TV season titled The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. The project has not been given a pilot order as it’s just in development stages.
Lee Toland Krieger would direct the potential pilot which would be written by Archie Comics CCO and Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are attached as executive producers along with Sacasa, Toland Krieger, and Jon Goldwater.
According to Warner Bros. TV, the spin-off would draw heavily from Aquirre-Sacasa’s CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA comic series. The current iteration of Sabrina in the comics features the beloved re-imagined teenage witch in a darker way than in past years.
This dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft and will see Sabrina struggle to reconcile her dual nature of being half-witch and half-mortal while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.”
This would be the second live-action interpretation of Sabrina on television, following the successful comedy adaptation starring Melissa Joan Hart which aired from 1996 – 2003. The spin-off is being described as a companion piece to Riverdale, which is returning for Season 2 next month. Variety adds that the tone of the project is being described as Rosemary’s Baby meets The Exorcist.
If Sabrina: The Teenage Witch gets picked up to series, it would potentially be the 8th comic book series for The CW in the 2018-2019 TV season, assuming that the other 7 gets renewed. It remains to be seen if Sabrina Spellman will debut on Riverdale first in Season 2, through a potential backdoor pilot, before her show kicks off.
