Charlie phoned into TV After Dark to talk just what murderous plots are being devised and solved in his new hit series, where he describes Frank, “in a nut shell is a bad boy with a heart of gold.” We learned about Frank’s back story, his relationship with Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and the secret behind Frank’s well manicured glorious beard and it’s not what you think. Want to know more? Listen to the audio of our goosebumps revelations on our interview with Charlie Weber below: (note audio may need to be turned down bad connection but Charlie Weber’s voice and laughter in any fashion deserves a listen.)
TVAD | Did you actively go for this particular character?
Charlie Weber | When I got the script, when I found out about this…once it was something I new about, I had to have it, the script was amazing. I loved Frank. I loved the endless possibilities I saw for him and desperately want to be the guy to create and be him and I’m just really happy it worked out.
Did you know this was a Shonda show and when you found out were you familiar with her work previously?
Yes, I was very familiar with Shonda Rhimes and what she had done and yes I knew she was attached at and the executive producer and I certainly knew, and that certainly fueled the fire because she does such great work; but at the end of the day it was about this guy and situation and the script was amazing and just Frank and everything and Shonda is amazing and Viola comes on it just kept getting better and better and continues to.
Are you still filming season one?
Yes, we just finished filming our ninth episode which is our mid-season finale and we’re going to head back in with 6 more shoots.
How close is Frank to Annalise Keating on a personal level or is the connection to those two characters purely professional?
No there’s some deep deep seeded things there that will delve into the future, but Frank has an almost blind loyalty to her and down the road we’ll find out what that stems from, but he’s been with her for a while. And they do have a professional relationship clearly, but they don’t get into their personal relationship, at least not yet, but he cares tremendously for her.
With Franks on scene chemistry with Laurel it’s foreshadowing a possible connection with them. Will this be explored into a romantic relationship or is there something much more in-depth with Frank’s women issues than we think?
Frank does have some women issues and he leads with his heart in all aspects of life and that can go both ways, good and bad. And yes, there is something there with Laurel and we’ll explore whether that’s an infatuation or if it’s something real. In tonight’s episode, the fifth episode airs tonight, it will be a step forward in finding that out.
Franks definitely cocky, he’s got some bravado but there are glimmers of a nice guy in there how much of that is real or do we see in the future a vulnerable side of Frank?
Yes, Franks a real person…in a nut shell a bad boy with a heart of gold and those things are real when he flashes the moments of vulnerability those are real moments and he’s a complicated person and layered one and those layers will be pealed back slowly but surely.
Everyone seems to have a particular back-story so far on the show, will we see that for you character Frank and how far into the episode do you see the development?
It will be in bits and pieces and we’ll explore the real back story down the road of the origin of Frank and Annalise’s relationship, which I think will be absolutely fascinating; but right now we’re moving full steam ahead and maybe not even this season we’ll delve into that over time.
What did you think about twitter blowing up over not just the 9 word omg…?
You don’t want to hear that. You never want some one to ask you that. You’re in trouble, there’s really no answer.
But Viola Davis decision to bare everything from lipstick to eyelashes to wig. Will Frank have one of those OMG moments?
He might…yea! And that was all Viola! That was her statement that this show is about real people, just real messed up people with messed up situations, who are trying to figure it out, and yes it was an absolutely extraordinary moment and it was very moving.
So let’s talk that beard for a second because I think you just made it a “thing” for ladies like myself especially our reviewer Lady Jenevia we weren’t particular fond of the facial scruff but now you’ve made us rethink this choice of man grooming. We’d love to get into beard care but how about instead was this a choice to grow or keep the beard for this role?
Yes it was a very, very distinct choice that I made and it was a topic of conversation and discussion between me and the network and the executive producer and they ultimately did let me keep it and I know it sounds crazy but it’s a very big part of the character and it kind of hold the keys to several things. He’s a street guy and tries to cling to that in some level and likes to remind himself of where he’s from. And he also in some way, is hiding from some things and doesn’t like to show his vulnerability. – I know it sounds crazy but that’s really the root of it and there’s a lack of trust. You know, lawyers don’t have beard, because you have a subconsciousness way of not trusting someone because it does seems like they’re hiding and I think it just lends itself to the complexity of Frank and inner psychology.
With so many revelations on this show. Is there are particular episode either you were a part of or another cast you’ve seen that fans you think will flip out on twitter?
There are moments in every show that twitter is going to be flipping out about; but there’s going to keep being reveals about people and the theme of knowing what they see are very real; and there will be moments of that in every episode so it will be hard to pin point because there’s a lot.
TV After Dark challenges Charlie Weber to our “Yes, No and Maybe” spoilery-ish questions that could very well hint to what’s in store for his character for the first 9 episodes of ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder.
- Will there be a love interest for Frank? Maybe
- Has Frank hooked up with Annalise in the past? No
- Could Frank be a suspect in Keating murder? Maybe
- Does Frank have a confidante? Maybe! (It’s a maybe kind of show but I was only distinct about the No about Annalise because that is developing in a sort maternal relationship and that’s how Frank views her and she views Frank.)
- Does Frank know who may have killed professor keating’s husband. Maybe
