Amy is finally a sergeant and Jake gets involved in a ponzi scheme with Charles before meeting his half-sister!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5×16, “NutriBoom” and 5×17, “DFW” on FOX was giving us laughs right along with a strong case of the feels. In the first half of the hour event, Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) and Jake (Andy Samberg) get themselves involved with a ponzi scheme. The company is clearly not on the good side of things, but Jake struggles to find the evidence needed to both take them down and get out of his contract. Meanwhile, Amy (Melissa Fumero) has been given her first squad as sergeant! But things aren’t all bliss as Amy has someone on her squad that acts strangely like her. When Amy seeks help from the old squad, Holt (Andre Braugher) is the one that’s able to help her.

In the second half of the event, Terry (Terry Crews) is forced to face the fact that even though he’s strong, there are some things he can’t do. Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) is forced to acknowledge that Gina (Chelsea Peretti) has some pretty good matchmaking judgement. In the midst of all this, Jake finally meets his half-sister, Kate! But things don’t go as smoothly as Jake hopes as it seems Kate is a bit more like their father than Jake assumed. Will we see more of Kate? What about the NutriBoom company keeping a close eye on both Jake and Charles from here on out? Will they prove to be dangerous?

1. What did you think about Amy being in charge of her own squad?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): Loved it!
Kaysi (@lilithsternin): I loved seeing her in charge! She’s worked so hard to get to this point and she’s doing an incredible job!
Aurora (@aurorasblog): It was beautiful to see!
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I thought it was great! No one deserves this more than Amy! But I also hope this episode was an indication that there will still be plenty of moments between Amy and our squad!
Pamela (@CharlesonPamela): Happy and sad at the same time! I love that she is here and she deserves it! But it will still be sad not having her on the same squad she’s always been on.

2. Was it surprising that Holt was the one with the best way to deal with Amy?
Christina: Holt is full of surprising wisdom. He’s been a cop for a long time and has dealt with so many people. In a way, I think he’s just like Amy. Just not as extreme!
Kaysi: No, he has been in her exact situation for years and has always done a great job of dealing with her!
Aurora: Yes and no. I was surprised in the moment, but thinking about it later, it made perfect sense!
Marilyn: Kind of. Only because he doesn’t always act like he knows what to do with some of the officers on his squad. Not that I blame him!
Pamela: It wasn’t surprising to me. Holt has had to deal with Amy for quite some time now. He’s had years to learn the right way to do it.

3. Were you surprised that Jake didn’t take the NutriBoom check and way out of his contract? He had no definitive proof about the company and could have walked away.
Christina: I want to say I was a little surprised. But at the same time, I wasn’t. Jake is a good cop and a good person. He knows he can get them somehow. He’s not the only person the company has cheated out of money and he wants to help.
Kaysi: Not really. Jake may not have had proof, but he definitely knew better than to get even deeper involved in it.
Aurora: I was shocked! I know he’s a good guy, but I didn’t realize he was that good of a guy. Especially because it didn’t seem like anything was stopping him from keeping the check and investigating them anyway. But his morals were even too high for that! He’s the best! A great role model!
Marilyn: No way! Jake is a goofball, but he has a heart of gold. Everything he does is on the right side of the line. He never would have taken NutriBoom’s dirty money!
Pamela: Kind of. Just because he could have taken the check and investigated them anyway. But there is probably a fear in him after being wrongfully in jail that taking the check could come back to bite him later.

4. What did you think of Jake’s half-sister, Kate?
Christina: Kate reminded me so much of Gina and Gina drives me crazy! In other words, Kate annoyed me.
Kaysi: Kate is certainly entertaining. But she’s definitely a lot to handle! I totally understand why Jake had such a hard time having her around.
Aurora: Oh, goodness gracious. A mess!
Marilyn: I thought she was hilarious. I loved seeing Andy Samberg and Nasim Pedrad on Saturday Night Live together. It’s great seeing them on screen once again! Also, they kind of look and act alike! It was great!
Pamela: Well, she certainly has some issues. But who could blame her? I hope we see a lot more of Kate!

5. Were you surprised that someone as strong as Terry was unable to do yoga like Charles?
Christina: I don’t think yoga has a lot to do with strength. It’s got a lot to do with being flexible and calm. Terry doesn’t seem that flexible, even though he has muscles.
Kaysi: A little bit! For someone as strong and athletic as Terry is, you would think he would be able to do yoga as well!
Aurora: Yes! I don’t know that I would’ve ever thought of that story line! Kudos to the writers! It was so fun!
Marilyn: I was! Not just because Terry is strong, but because he is usually shockingly graceful. I don’t know much about yoga, but I figured Terry would be a boss at it!
Pamela: Not really. While Terry is super strong and generally pretty graceful, he certainly isn’t centered. Yoga is all about being calm and at peace. Terry is very excitable and always seems stressed.

6. Gina ended up doing a pretty great job setting up Rosa. Why do you think Rosa was so against the idea in the beginning?
Christina: I totally get where Rosa was coming from not wanting to be set up on a date. Rosa has shown she’s super picky about people and she didn’t like the guys Gina hooked her up with in the past. I can be super picky about people too, so I felt Rosa’s hesitance.
Kaysi: I think Rosa just sees how Gina is and assumes she either wouldn’t take a set up seriously or she would automatically dislike most anyone Gina considered a friend.
Aurora: Rosa hates help from anyone on anything. She hates having anyone know about her personal life. The combination of those two things is why she hated the idea of being set up by Gina.
Marilyn: We know Rosa has a hard time asking for help with anything ever. So that’s definitely part of it. But Rosa is also pretty secretive about her personal life. Secrets and Gina definitely don’t mix.
Pamela: Rosa and Gina have kind of an odd relationship. It’s certainly not the type of relationship that would inspire confidence in having the other pick a date.

7. Did it shock you that Charles was not only able to pick Terry up, but also carry him?
Christina: Yeah, Charles shocked me a little! I think this whole yoga thing gave Terry a lesson.
Kaysi: Yes! That was hilarious! I am so proud of him and his new bone strength.
Aurora: Yes! I was waiting for him to fall over! Maybe it’s time to seriously pick up yoga!
Marilyn: Anyone who says they weren’t surprised is crazy! I didn’t think there was any way that was going to work. Way to go, Charles!
Pamela: Absolutely! Not only shocked but wildly impressed! I think my jaw may still be on the floor after witnessing that!

Final Verdict: Meeting someone who acts a lot like Jake and seeing Charles lift Terry was exactly what we never knew we needed!
Seeing Jake out of his element is always fun! But when it came time to meet his half-sister, Jake proved just how much he’s grown as a person. We’re going to give that credit to Amy! But then we noticed that Kate is just the female version of Jake from season one. We definitely want to see more of her and would love to see her on a journey similar to the one Jake has experienced. Then we had Charles! We never thought there was any way he was going to be able to pick up Terry. But he did! It was kind of nice to see that there are some things that Terry can’t do!

We really hope that this show isn’t bringing in the character of Kate just to have this be the last season. We are also hoping that seeing Kate won’t be a one-time thing. Her character was hilarious and we definitely want to see more of her. Also, is this whole NutriBoom thing going to continue, or are we just going to forget about that? They set up the story like it was something that was going to be addressed a bit more. Jake being spied on by the company and promising that he is going to find the evidence to shut the company down seems like an adventure that will have to span more than one episode. But with this show, we can just never be sure and we would hate to see this story disappear for good. We want that company to get what is coming to them!
Next week we have so many things to look forward to! Not only is Pimento back, but he’s going to be working with Jake and Charles as they try to figure out how Charles’ food truck burnt. Then we have Rosa of all people trying to convince Amy that she should be excited about trying to find the perfect dress for her upcoming wedding to Jake! On the always fun side of things, Gina and Terry team up to help Captain Holt learn the art of social media and how to operate it all! Next week is looking pretty exciting!
