As we hit the 99th episode, the squad races to get Holt back to the precinct for an interview!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5×09 “99” on FOX had us reminiscing on all the good times! Jake (Andy Samberg) figures out that Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) needs to be back at the 99th precinct for an interview. Something that wouldn’t be a problem, except the whole squad is in LA for the funeral of their old captain! While this would be the perfect time for Amy (Melissa Fumero) to take over, she’s decided she’s going to be laid back from now on. That leaves everything up to the rest of the squad, including Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller). But they’re more hindrance than they are a help.

Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) attempts to save the day by having the squad stay with family on their way back home. All while simultaneously trying to figure out who Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) is dating. Hint: it’s a shocker! Terry (Terry Crews) is following Amy’s example by not being of much help. He’s too concerned with the fact that he missed out on his first class flight, so he’s trying to recreate it. What will happen if Holt gets the Commissioner job? When will Gina make her re-entrance? Will we ever get to meet Rosa’s new significant other?

1. While Amy may be uptight, that’s why we love her. Why do you think Amy wants to change all of a sudden?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): Amy sees how uptight she’s been for so many years with the squad. She’s also dating Jake, who doesn’t really get uptight about anything. Now that Peraltiago is engaged, I think they’re definitely influencing each other a lot more.
Kaysi (@julietknope): I think it was just seeing the old photographs of her where she just looked miserable. She saw herself unhappy and wanted to try and change that.
Aurora (@aurorasblog): I think it’s somewhat human nature to always want to be “better,” and “better” means different things to different people. A lot of people, no matter what their qualities, wonder “what life would be like if I were…” and often that question ends with some kind of polar opposite of how they are now. So, it makes sense to me that she’d explore one of the “what if” questions of life.
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): I don’t think Amy has realized how much she’s changed over the years. I definitely don’t think she’s as uptight as she used to be. I’m not sure why she thinks she needs to change it, though. But I’m glad she came to her senses about it.
Pamela (@CharlesonPamela): I think it just scared her how miserable she looked in the old photos. But she was assuming it was because she was uptight. Maybe that was part of it, but it was also before she got together with Jake, and found a great captain in Holt.

2. Jake finally gets to live out one of his dreams. But does it surprise you that it leads to problems when they get stuck in the building?
Christina: As soon as Jake said to stop the RV, I knew there was going to trouble! Nothing ever goes smoothly in or with the 99.
Kaysi: Not really! At first, it kind of seemed like it was just Jake’s luck that something he was so excited about would cause trouble for the precinct!
Aurora: I don’t know if it really surprised me per se. I mean, I wasn’t expecting it. I guess that’s the definition of a surprise maybe. It didn’t seem shocking, but I also didn’t see it coming. I have no idea if I’ve just made any sense!
Marilyn: It didn’t surprise me that they ran into trouble, but it did surprise me that Holt allowed them to stop in the first place. Until I realized why, of course.
Pamela: I knew something was going to happen. It clearly wasn’t going to be an easy trip home. Ahem, looking at you Holt. But at least Jake still got to live his dream!

3. Why is Terry so obsessed with reenacting his first class plane experience in the RV?
Christina: Terry deserves to fly first class! He’s got three girls at home, plus his grown up work kids to take care of every day. I would be obsessed with trying to recreate my first class experience too!
Kaysi: The only explanation I can think of is it’s his reaction to the pure disappointment of not getting to live out the first class experience he was so excited for. He wanted to make the most of the situation he was in!
Aurora: My guess is that Terry probably doesn’t get to do a lot of stuff for himself. He’s got kids he tries to give the world to. He also seems to often put his wife and work above himself. He was going to finally have something for him, and it was taken away. So, he was probably just trying to hold onto it as best he could.
Marilyn: He really wanted to be in first class. I think it’s really stupid that he couldn’t get it back! Poor Terry can never catch a break. That’s probably why he wanted to get that experience so bad!
Pamela: Aww, Terry! I would have wanted my first class experience too! I probably would have been acting the same way!

4. Charles is pretty desperate about Rosa’s love life. What makes Charles want to know who Rosa is dating so badly?
Christina: I honestly have no idea why Charles would want to know about Rosa’s dating life as bad as he did. I’m thinking maybe he just wants to see if Rosa’s happy or if she’s just rebounding after Pimento. I still miss that crazy so much.
Kaysi: I don’t know, he tends to like to know what everyone in the precinct is up to. Especially the people he is closest to. I think he genuinely cares about Rosa and just wanted to know what was going on.
Aurora: Hmm. Well, he used to have a thing for her. Maybe there’s some residual curiosity from that? Or maybe just being a detective gives him more of a general curiosity toward life? I really don’t know why he’s so curious about Rosa’s love life.
Marilyn: Sometimes I wonder if Charles still has romantic feelings for Rosa. Like, he wants her to be happy, but a part of him also still thinks of her romantically. I don’t know.
Pamela: Charles is a hopeless romantic! I think he just loves love! He wants to know that everyone on his squad has someone and is happy!

5. Even though Captain Holt really does want to be commissioner, he’s worried about being compromised. What do you think about the situation?
Christina: I think Captain Holt had the right idea about not wanting to be commissioner so he wouldn’t be compromised. He’s a smart guy and he also trusts his squad to help him in case he does become commissioner and needs their help.
Kaysi: I think it’s a really difficult position for him to be in. He has every reason to be worried about being compromised. But at the same time, he shouldn’t let that stop him from pursuing what he truly wants to do.
Aurora: Now, this is the part I found super surprising! I’d almost forgotten that Holt is compromised! To be having something he did for Jake and Rosa coming back to interfere with his dreams? Oh goodness, all the feels!
Marilyn: I think it sucks that he is compromised in the first place. Also, it’s adorable that he just wanted to shield the rest of the squad from the entire situation. But, I think he’s going to need them if there is any hope of him being commissioner and getting out of the situation.
Pamela: It’s awful! Every time something good happens, something bad trails along behind! Holt deserves that promotion and I have no doubt that he’ll get it. I also think that if anyone can help him out of his favor, it’s this squad!

6. Rosa reveals that she is dating a woman. Does it surprise you when she tells Charles she’s bi? We can’t wait to meet her girlfriend!
Christina: I remember reading a synopsis of an upcoming episode where someone has to help Rosa out with something. I had a feeling it was about her being bi. I didn’t think the writers would have Rosa come out in the 99th episode, so I was a bit surprised by that.
Kaysi: No, I think this has been a long time coming! I definitely look forward to meeting her girlfriend!
Aurora: I have no idea how much the writers pay attention to the fans, but the internet has been clamoring for Rosa to have a girlfriend. So, the people have spoken and we’re getting what we want! I think it’s so awesome, and it feels like it’s totally in character for her. I’m really happy to see some more bi-visibility on TV. Especially network TV!
Marilyn: I was kind of surprised. Just because we’ve never seen that side of her. But with Rosa, we haven’t seen a lot of things from her. Even after five years, that woman is still an expert at being a mystery. I’m so, so excited for her though! I really want to meet her girlfriend.
Pamela: Kind of surprised. But not entirely. Only because Rosa is such a private person that we really don’t know much about her personal life to begin with. But so many fans have wanted this for such a long time, and it is really true to her character.

7. Jake tells Amy to let her inner high strung flag fly. She shows us how impressive she is. Do you prefer high strung Amy, or laid back Amy?
Christina: I like Amy when she’s in the middle of high strung and laid back. High strung Amy freaks me out, but makes me laugh so hard! Laid back Amy is so awkward because she tries so hard to be chill.
Kaysi: I prefer high strung Amy! I love her no matter what, but she’s herself when she’s high strung.
Aurora: High strung Amy 100%. That’s her essence, and I love her!
Marilyn: I definitely prefer high strung Amy. But that may be because laid back Amy is so awkward. Still adorable, of course. But super awkward.
Pamela: Hmm, while high strung Amy is who she really is at heart, laid back Amy is kind of fun too! I love watching her struggle to remain chill when you can see she wants to internally freak out!

Final Verdict: Not only did we love the 99th episode, but we truly hope there will be another 99 to look forward to!
The writing on this show has been exceptional for the past five years, and they don’t show any signs of stopping now! This show has accurately represented so many things in life. The character and relationship development has always been on point. They don’t do things for drama sake. The writers have always done things that are clearly organic for the characters and the actors playing them. We truly hope there are many more seasons to come! But if there aren’t, this is one of the shows that will be replayed over and over again. The 99th episode had almost everything we could have asked for! They even threw in quite a few throwbacks to the first episode of the show. Those really had us feeling all the feels! Not that we’ve watched it enough times to remember everything word for word.

There was one really disappointing thing with this episode, even though it was overall amazing! We love that the show celebrated the 99th episode instead of the 100th. But we didn’t love that there was no Gina. We know, we know, she’s on maternity leave. We also know we’ve said it before. But how can you have a milestone like this and not have the core characters be involved in some way! Couldn’t we have had at least a phone call or something? We suppose if that’s the only flaw we could find, then we are doing pretty well. We’re just a bit salty about it.
We can all perk up with next week’s episode! It’s all about Jake helping Rosa tell her parents her big news. Which means Rosa has told the entire squad about her girlfriend, and we’re excited! We know the entire squad loves Rosa and will absolutely support her. There is a little concern with how her family will react to the news, and we hope that having Jake there will maybe make the situation a bit more light hearted. It is Jake after all. There is also a pretty good possibility that we will get to meet Rosa’s new girlfriend next week. Now that’s something to be excited over!
