This week, we got a Halloween like no other as Jake showed us how much he truly is growing up!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode 5×04, “HalloVeen”, on FOX had us laughing, crying, and jumping up and down for joy! We also got a little miffed when we thought Gina (Chelsea Peretti) had made her reappearance. Only to find out it was a trick. Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) was even more serious this year than usual. Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) shocked us all when he turned on Jake (Andy Samberg) to team up with Terry (Terry Crews) and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz). Then we had Jake finally proposing to Amy (Melissa Fumero) right when we were beginning to think it was never going to happen.

It was definitely a Halloween to remember at the 99th Precinct. We loved having Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) come together with the others to celebrate Jake and Amy’s engagement. We also loved having Cheddar make his appearance. Captain Holt always turns into a teddy bear when his favorite pooch is around. Now we just have to wait and see how long of an engagement Jake and Amy are going to have. We also have a lot of questions about the wedding! That’s definitely something we’re going to want to see, and soon!
Let’s meet our roundtable of the week and get into it!
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic) – Massive obsessive fan of movies, TV, music, and YouTube.
Tori (@danniebear87) – Just a random, weird, and creative chick!
Kaysi (@julietknope) – Trash for good television.
Aurora (@AurorasBlog) – Marathon runner and equity actress, currently running 882 miles for the 882 daily victims of assault for Project882!
Denny (@df_t7) – I’m multi-fandom and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is my new obsession! I also do crafts, read and watch shows.

1. We always seem to see a different side of the squad at Halloween. Did it shock you to see Captain Holt in Jake and Amy’s room? Did it have you cracking up?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): I was shocked to see Captain Holt in Jake and Amy’s room! But it was so hilarious because he looked like such a creeper sitting there in the chair in the dark.
Tori (@danniebear87): Yes it did. He scared me! Well played though.
Kaysi (@julietknope): I so love that the members of the Nine-Nine will go to all lengths in order to get ahead of each other in the heist! It was hilarious.
Aurora (@AurorasBlog): I was definitely cracking up. What a fun way to start a good ol’ Halloween episode! Always playing with our expectations, even from the very top. Loved it!
Denny (@df_t7): It was unexpected, but Halloween Holt is the crazy one. So, it’s not shocking. That was really funny!

2. Terry once again says he isn’t getting involved in the heist, then teams up with Charles and Rosa. Was his lack of participation last year really a set up?
Christina: I have a feeling that everyone may have been in on the heist with Jake just because he proposed at the end. Who knows, maybe it was a set up so that one Halloween episode, Terry will win.
Tori: I think it was. Terry was just trying to be sneaky. I don’t blame him. He just wants to win one. Amy and Gina showed it can be done.
Kaysi: Yeah, I think so. Anything to throw the rest of the squad off track!
Aurora: I love to think it was! Halloween is such a big deal for them. And he’s really smart. So, why not?
Denny: Well, he said it was, so it must be true. Right?

3. For a moment there, we all thought Gina was back! Did you get excited to see her as well? What did you think when it came out as a trick?
Christina: I’m not a huge Gina fan, but I liked that it was a trick because I think we all thought she was back.
Tori: I was happy to see Gina back. I was crushed when she wasn’t there. I miss her so much and hope’s she’ll be back soon.
Kaysi: YES. I miss Gina so much. I cannot wait for her to come back, so I was hoping we really would see her! But I loved that Bill, aka Fake Charles, got to reprise his role of Gina.
Aurora: I was excited! Then I was definitely surprised that it wasn’t her after all. I like to think I’m a fairly smart person, and then when I watch the B99 Halloween episodes, I realize I know nothing. They’re always so brilliant, and so many steps ahead (to me, at least!).
Denny: I was happy but at the same time I had a little doubt. So I was not totally disappointed! Seeing it was Bill just made things better. That character is great!

4. Charles actually betrayed Jake! That’s something we thought we would never see. What about you? Were you shocked to see Charles on a team that went against Jake?
Christina: I was a little shocked to see Boyle betray Jake! But like with Terry getting involved when he said he wasn’t, his betrayal was part of the heist since it was part of Jake’s proposal.
Tori: I was shocked when Charles betrayed Jake. He was working with Holt last year, so he was just working with his team. But he chose to do this year on his own. It was a nice twist. I was rooting for the Tramps.
Kaysi: I was definitely surprised to see Charles team up against Jake. He was so against it last year, so to see him turn on Jake so willingly was unexpected!
Aurora: I was utterly shocked. However, I feel like potentially, had the episode played out differently, eventually I bet he maybe would’ve rolled over. I also think it was nice Jake did such a super secret special thing for Amy. As much as I adore Charles, and am so glad he’s in Jake’s life, it was that the big reveal was a surprise to every single person!
Denny: Yes! Totally! My reaction was: “What? What? What?”.

5. This episode showed us how well Jake and Amy really know each other. Do you like watching them work as a team? Or is it better to watch them go head to head?
Christina: I am a die hard (ha, “die hard”) Peraltiago fan, so I will take them either butting heads or teaming up. I crack up to no end with Amy’s “tough talk”. She’s so unbelievably competitive and Melissa Fumero always does such a good job with Amy when the character has to be out of her normal bubble.
Tori: I thought it was cute how much they know each other. That’s a tough one because I enjoy both. Even when they’re going against each other, they still throw in some love. They enjoy going against each other just as much as working together and it shows.
Kaysi: Jake and Amy are hilarious when they go head to head, but I definitely prefer to see them work together. They make such an amazing team.
Aurora: I loved the way they worked in this episode. Which, to me, was sort of a head-to-head-working-together, if that weirdness makes sense.
Denny: I love both ways! They are so cute and funny. It’s just the best interaction in any way. Impossible to choose!

6. Jake proposed to Amy! Did you see that coming or were you pleasantly surprised? How long do you think we will have to wait for the wedding?
Christina: Incredibly surprised! My heart was racing. Like Amy, I thought it was a joke. So when the scene went to commercial I tried not to get my hopes up. But once Jake told Amy it was real I was so surprised. I’m so happy they’re engaged. Based off other story lines, like Jake and Amy’s bet, the wedding will probably happen soon. Hopefully before they go on break before the holidays. I’m ready for a Peraltiago wedding!
Tori: I was shocked. Not that Jake proposed, I always felt that was coming. It’s the way he did it. Sneaky and surprisingly. I was trying not to cry. I’ve shipped them since the beginning. I knew Amy would give in to Jake eventually and now they’re engaged! The wedding might be the season finale, but I hope they don’t make us wait that long.
Kaysi: I had a feeling there was going to be a proposal! Everyone said it had to be watched live. I thought it was because it was the Halloween episode. But once it started, I felt like we were going to see a proposal. I’m SO glad that was the case! I feel like we won’t have to wait long for the wedding.
Aurora: I didn’t see it coming at all. It showed how much Jake loves Amy. Not only because he knows her so well, but because, even though Holt said nobody won, I think technically, Amy did. She was the one with the belt at midnight. If Jake is willing to lose the heist for Amy, that’s true love. I have no idea how long we’ll have to wait, but B99 (to me) never rushes things. So, maybe not until the end of the season. We’ll see soon enough! I can’t wait to see what kind of bride Amy is and what kind of wedding planning she’s into!
Denny: I was expecting this! I saw a video of Dan Goor saying this Halloween would be the best. I thought “Jake will propose!”! But I imagined it differently. I figured Jake would have the squad minus Charles because he would be too excited. Amy would win and when she went to show the squad, she would find the ring instead. When she turned around, she would find him on one knee. But what happened was so much better! They’re alone at the site of the first FOR REALS kiss! She beat him in everything he planned. She said several times he couldn’t surprise her. Then, “SURPRISE”! His nervousness when she goes to open the box! The inscription on the belt, oh my heart! The whole scene was breathtaking. Dan said they WANT to do it this season!

7. Did this Halloween episode live up to the others? Which Halloween episode has been your favorite?
Christina: I’m not going to say this was the best Halloween episode, even though Jake proposing to Amy was the best part, and Rosa and the whole cast had so many great lines. My favorite Halloween episode is when Amy won. I love how she played everyone and really got angry at everyone for seeing her the way they did. I can watch that Halloween episode over and over again.
Tori: Yes it did. The episode was well written and full of surprises. While you’re watching, it’s like ‘oh, well how is this going to work out?’. Or ‘well, that didn’t go as planned’. I always enjoy the end when they show how it all came together. I’ve enjoyed them all of course. It’s a tie between Halloween three and four for me. Three was the first to show how anyone could be sneaky enough to out sneak Jake and Holt. I liked how Amy showed she’s not that squeaky clean. She can play dirty too. Four showed that it’s anyone’s game. Gina was just as sneaky as the detectives.
Kaysi: Absolutely! I’ve loved every Halloween episode! But this one might be my new favorite.
Aurora: I feel like it’s impossible to choose! I’m flabbergasted by how amazing the Halloween episodes are. I’m already looking forward to 2018’s!
Denny: Yes! Definitely! They are all very good, but this is the best Halloween episode!

Final Verdict: We truly couldn’t have been any happier with the highly anticipated Halloween episode!
We truly got more than we expected with this episode. The writers of this show need to go to other shows and teach them how to do a successful and realistic relationship. Viewers have been invested in Jake and Amy from moment one, and only become more invested over time. There have never been any break ups and getting back together for these two. They were best friends and partners who realized they wanted more from the other and tried to fight it. But they eventually realized they couldn’t and have been together ever since. They’ve had fights, but always been able to work through them. So other shows need to take notes!
We truly couldn’t find any flaws in this episode. Even if we took it apart bit by bit and examined it with a microscope. Now, no episode of a show is perfect, but if there was ever one to come close, this would be it. If Captain Holt were to be asked about flaws, he would think it was that no one actually won the heist. But that’s mostly because he doesn’t want to admit that he lost. We, on the other hand, think everyone truly won this year!
