‘Wynonna Earp’ 2×02 slams the pedal down as prissy Agent Lucado commands the BBD…and it’s hilariously atrocious
Wynonna Earp’ may have feasted like Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) on all of our Earper brains this episode!
Bizarrely, it seems the Black Badge Division are blessed with top headquarters that include…skanky shared showers, as Doc (Tim Rozon) and Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) find out. We see Agent Lucado really crank up her control freak powers over the division in Dolls’ (Shamier Anderson) absence.
The case of the week involves new character Mercedes, and her new block of apartments. Unfortunately for her they seem haunted by–yep, you guessed it–Revenants. Thus we’re back to some Peacemaker action, Earl(!), creepy cobwebs and creepier spider-monsters. It seems that whilst we’re always under the threat of the Revenants in Purgatory, we’re gonna see a whole lot more heave-inducing monsters along the way.
We do get some big moments though. Firstly, Nedley decides that Doc should be the front-runner for owning Shorty’s. An infamous gunslinger owning a saloon style bar? Hell. Yeah. But to what nefarious means could this new hideout or hideaway be used for by Doc?

Furthermore, we get our real stumble with the smooth-sailing ‘WayHaught’ ship. So far, it’s been fluff and bulletproof vests and more cuteness. We’re pretty sure Nicole’s “Waverly stare” beams lazer rays of rainbows and unicorns galloping along. But they hit their iceberg.
Nicole’s still bitter at her deputisation reversal, and Waverly’s struggling with Bobo’s revelation, Lucado in general, and unwittingly, the black demon goo possessing her. They differ in their priorities, but ultimately, they realise their priorities coincide when it comes to them.
(Aww).
‘WayHaught’ sail quite the journey this episode. They do the do (so maybe Wynonna isn’t the most adult anymore…) and sweetly make up by the end. Despite their differences. And that’s the crowning glory of this relationship. They’re looking to veer on very different paths. But as they intertwine their fingers and draw closer to each other, you can’t help but think no matter what, Waverly will always find her way back to Nicole, and vice versa.

1. What did you think of Nicole’s obvious bitterness/jealousy over her reversal of deputation, and how will it affect her this series?
Alli (@haughtpatrol)
It has to be hard, to have something like that taken away when all you really want is to protect people and someone you love. It’s easy to see that all Nicole wants is to be included, be part of the team and kick some demon butt (who wants to be left in the dark, it’s a scary place sometimes, especially in Purgatory). I have always seen Nicole as having a level headed, mature attitude, so I think she will be big enough to let it go……eventually.
Hannah (@EarpSista):
I think the de-deputising of Nicole will be her main drive and story arc for the season. She seems like someone who is very proud of herself and to have a demotion for no apparent reason is enough to make anyone upset, especially Nicole!
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
As I mentioned last week, I believe the demotion will end up being an asset when she is able to get around some loophole in the blood contract. As for her bitterness/jealousy, I think it’s perfectly understandable. She’s a woman who takes her career seriously, and we see her as human with this reaction. She’s not the unflappable cop she appeared to be last season.
Nic (@CloneNic):
I think she has every right to be bitter about it. Her career is obviously very important to her and going from Purgatory cop to a member of the Black Badge would have been a pretty sweet career upgrade! I have a feeling she’s going to fight for a bigger role career wise. If that means it’s with the Purgatory Sheriff’s Department or with Black Badge remains to be seen, but damn I’d love to see her go toe to toe with Lucado!

2. WayHaught is tumultuous to say the least this episode: each character has so much going on with them, internally. How do you think episode two has set WayHaught’s journey together for this season? Will they explode? Champion each other?
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Angst, angst, angst…..love it! No matter what, they want to support and protect each other. They “like” each other, quite a bit apparently going by the end of this episode. I am a bit of a hopeless romantic so I have to believe that in the end they will champion each other. The road may be a bumpy one, but that is what makes it so great (give me a winding road with twist, turns, ups and downs any day).
Hannah (@EarpSista):
Tumultuous is certainly one way to put their relationship this episode! I adore the fact that they seem to have ups and downs. It’s natural and that helps build an even more solid foundation for their relationship. I think they will of course champion each other and help each other any way they can, but I don’t think it will be an easy ride. I see trouble ahead!
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
Nic (@CloneNic):
Their relationship is still so very new that it’s not surprising that there is tension. It seems like for season two there will be a bit of push and pull that comes with two different personalties, especially when one of those personalities is currently sharing space with a demon (or whatever was in that goo). I don’t think they’ll explode but I do think there will probably be some rough patches to come, however, at the end of the day it’s clear they really care for one another so in spite of those rough patches I think they’ll champion one another when it is most necessary.

3. Do you think it’s truly Willa haunting Wynonna, or is it some other demon? Or is it Wynonna’s conscience?
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Hannah (@EarpSista):
I don’t think it has anything to do with Willa. Maybe a demon/ghost/witch is trying to play with her by using her sister’s scent.
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
Nic (@CloneNic):
I’m getting the vibe that Purgatory is the “Wynonna Earp” equivalent of Sunnydale’s Hellmouth. So I’m guessing it’s probably some other demon trying to torment Wynonna for funsies. Or who knows, maybe this demon has an actual plan.
Curt Bennett (@CurtTalksTV):
I know Emily Andras well enough that I’m actively trying not to make predictions here. The one thing I’ll say is that it may SEEM like Willa to Wynonna, but I expect that’s either just the way she perceives it or what the demon wants Wynonna to think.

4. Doc and Rosita make quite the team. What did you think of their chemistry and who may Rosita possibly be?
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Hannah (@EarpSista):
Well they certainly know each other. Without a lot to go on it’s hard to say what their relationship might be., and who she is. What are they cooking up in the basement….who knows?!
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
Well, they’re building us up to think she’s some kind of drug cook, but I think it’ll turn out to be some other sort of “chemistry” she practices. As for her chemistry with Doc, it’s hard to say. It feels like they’ve had dealings before. I like her toughness, and I hope she becomes part of the team.
Nic (@CloneNic):
Those two have some pretty intense on screen chemistry which I’m guessing might make our Wynonna a little jealous. And honestly I’d love to have some great theory on who Rosita is but other than thinking she’s not totally trustworthy I’ve got nothing.

5. We spoke last week of Kevin Hanchard and Kate Drummond. Let’s give Varun Saranga some love! How do you think he’ll help BBD, and what qualities do you think he offers that the BBD lack?
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Hannah (@EarpSista):
I’m loving the character of Jeremy so far, he seems like a bit of comic relief in between all the craziness. He is obviously the ‘tech guy’ as proven with him trying to make an arrhythmical to find the demons. It’s been nice to see some new characters thrown in with our core gang.
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
As Waverly pointed out when she was trying to dissect the giant spider egg sac, he brings a level of scientific rigor that the team lacked before. Waverly provides the archival research and intuitive-intellectual skills. She definitely has some degree of scientific and computer abilities too, but Jeremy picks up where she leaves off, adding a “left brain” skillset to the team. He also seems to possess a lot of knowledge of the various demonic creatures that have made their way into Purgatory, which rounds out Waverly’s on-the-ground local expertise. I think they’ll make a good team.
Nic (@CloneNic):
If he can stop swooning over Doc so much I think he’ll be quite useful! I mean I can’t blame him for the swooning, but he’s got to focus a little more on the task at hand and not the gorgeous stache in front of him. I think he’ll bring a much needed science eye to things. Wave’s has the historical aspect, Wynonna the badassery, now you need a little science from time to time to figure out how to take things down!
Curt Bennett (@CurtTalksTV):

6. What do you think Doc’s arc will be this season? He’s obviously working with Rosita but he seems an outsider in regards to the BBD.
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Hannah (@EarpSista):
I think Doc will help the BBD sometimes but in general he will keep out of the main demon hunting. I think this season he will be doing things for himself and not just to please Wynonna.
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
He’s obviously playing Lucado. I think he’s distancing himself personally from Wynonna a bit because she needs that right now, and he used that distance in his dealings with Lucado. His negotiation with her for Shorty’s was smart, and he “forgot” about Wy and Waverly on purpose in order to gain some tentative trust from her. We’ll have to see how the scheme with Rosita plays out. Regardless, I’m really happy that he’ll be the proprietor of Shorty’s. That seems incredibly fitting for Doc. And Shorty’s is almost a character on the show in itself.
Nic (@CloneNic):
I think Doc is keeping the Earps at an arms length which is making him more of an outsider. He’s already been hurt by an Earp before and I don’t think he’s keen on having that happen again. Something also tells me he may know more about everything than he’s letting on.
Curt Bennett (@CurtTalksTV):

7. Wynonna lost Willa; now she may even lose Waverly. What are your thoughts on that?
Alli (@haughtpatrol):
Hannah (@EarpSista):
If Wynonna loses Waverly I don’t think she’ll cope. A mental breakdown would be ahead of her for sure. I’m not certain she will find out about Waverly’s worry that she’s not an Earp- at least not yet. Waverly knows how hard Wynonna is taking Willa’s death and will try to shield her a little from her own worries, and I think this is why she talks to Nicole about her problems instead. Wynonna really is in her own head space at the moment and maybe that’s why she hasn’t noticed that her sister is a little ‘off’. When she finds out, all hell will break loose in the Earp Sisters dynamic and what amazing chaos that will be to watch!
Elizabeth Bridges (@EGBridges):
I don’t believe she will lose Waverly. Even if Waverly does prove to be something other than an Earp, she’ll still be Wynonna’s sister, and nothing can change that. And besides, as Nicole pointed out, Waverly is the Earpiest Earp. I fully support that statement.
Nic (@CloneNic):
I’m not emotionally prepared for that. If it turns out Waverly isn’t an Earp I could see Wynonna shutting down and thus shutting Waverly out which would be devastating. The Earp sisters are the heart of this show and to think that they may be torn apart is gut wrenching.
Curt Bennett (@CurtTalksTV):

Final Verdict: Lucado’s holding us at gunpoint telling us to tell you Earpers how fantastic her tyrannical reign over the BBD is…but hey, we can’t actually say we disagree that much!
‘Wynonna Earp’ continues to purr seductively over on Syfy for viewers who still haven’t tuned into the phenomenon it’s become. And it’s so irresistibly good that you can’t not watch it. If it’s our last plea (it won’t be) then please tune in. We know you want some campy, fun, reckless, shameless, punchy, brave sci-fi, fantasy, Western, often comedic mosh-pit. There’s a piece of your heart thumping rapidly at the thought.
Writer Alexandra Zarowny held nothing back. Out came the spiders; out came Waverly devouring one of the dead demon spiders. Think of ‘Wynonna Earp’ as a speakeasy back in the day. It proudly airs scenes you’d imagine the executives at The CW would stare at in horror before hastily shoving the papers away, their faces ashen at the very idea.
‘Wynonna Earp’ slipped a little from its bolstering premiere, penned by creator Emily Andras, last week. But this week’s episode was nonetheless fun–endlessly so–and quick-witted. The day you stop enjoying this little show, will be the day pigs fly.
It’s been all about Lucado and the reshaping of the BBD thus far. We wonder: how much change will go down? When will Dolls come back to seize his rightful position? And do we really want to lose snooty Lucado at all? That’s all to find out next week!
Keep it locked with us at TV After Dark for your Wynonna Earp live-tweets, reviews and weekly roundtables as ever! A massive thank you to this week’s contributing Earpers–please do share some love with them on Twitter, if you can spare!
Wynonna Earp returns Friday, June 23rd 10/9c on Syfy.
Alexandra Zarowny impresses as ever with a brave and witty follow-up to Emily Andras’ heavyweight of a premiere. We certainly loved it–especially Lucado (oh, you loveable, evil, snooty, haughty devil). Join us next week where we’ll be once again live-tweeting with you, reviewing the episode and ushering out our weekly roundtables!WYNONNA EARP is likely to sweep the fandom floor with disconnected jaws of horror and disbelief whilst covering it up lovingly with some rainbow WayHaught sprinkles. That’s the juggernaut that is ‘Wynonna Earp’, and we love it.
