Syfy posted this trailer for “Van Helsing,” and wow, did they cram a lot of stuff into 30 seconds! Here are five thoughts I had after watching it.
- Syfy is building on their brand of TV shows with strong superhero women who think they’re “nothing special.” (“Wynonna Earp,” anyone?) But as the trailer for “Van Helsing” shows, Vanessa Van Helsing is very, very special and will do whatever it takes to keep the vampires at bay.
- Vampire fighting is a family business. The screen crawl tells us that “fighting vampires is in her blood,” and the last name “Van Helsing” tells anyone who’s even dipped a toe into the realm of science fiction that there is going to be a lot of history in this one.
- The similarities to another genre favorite, “Buffy,” abound. From the opening seconds showing Vanessa in a white dress (a la “Prophecy Girl”), said heroine being pretty tough, Master-like vampires, the fact that she possibly has prophetic dreams, and the fact that she’s, you know, a vampire fighter all combine to make some pretty convincing comparisons.
- She has a mysterious helper/sidekick/random guy with her, all arm-tatted up and gunshot wounded. Who is he – Friend? Enemy? Lover? Brother? (Probably not brother, because he’s toweling off in front of her.) “Somebody thought you were [special],” he says, the sneering look on his face indicating he is not that someone.
- Fall on Syfy is going to be amazing – action, gunfights, combat, quippy dialogue, and talented actors. The premiere of “Van Helsing” is September 23rd, and I’m counting the days!
