A group of passionate followers meets on a weekly basis to discuss their love of Supergirl
Can you blame them, really? After all, we’re here to do the same thing. In Supergirl’s latest episode, Kara (Melissa Benoist) and her friends discover that a religion has formed around the very idea of Supergirl herself. Kara is understandably weirded out, but things get even worse from there. These “believers,” who liken Kara to a God, are intentionally putting themselves in danger so that Supergirl will save them. This is an orientation technique – a step that one must complete to join the “church.” This is quite obviously a problem, and the remainder of the episode is spent trying to stop this terrible cult before someone gets hurt.

Meanwhile, it’s all about the kids for Sam (Odette Annable) and Alex (Chyler Leigh). Sam spends the episode balancing her work, personal, and mom life. She bounces around from soccer games to the office, and, in a delightful surprise, Kara’s apartment for girls night in with our four main ladies. It’s simultaneously amazing and heartbreaking to see Sam bonding with Kara, Lena (Katie McGrath), Alex, and Maggie (Floriana Lima). She fits in so well with the group already, but this development is going to make it really tough when she ends up as this season’s big bad. Having Sam around reminds Alex of everything she’s forcing herself to sacrifice for Maggie. Alex is a natural mother, and she desperately wants a child. The building tension comes to a head when Alex tearfully admits her desires to Kara outside of Ruby’s school recital. Alex has finally admitted what we all knew to be true – her and Maggie disagree on a pivotal life decision, and it may spell the end of their relationship.

1. This episode was all about the Supergirl cult! If things had never gotten dangerous, would the group still be a bad thing? Why or why not?
Becca (@karadanverss): I have to say the whole Supergirl cult was a big no for me. Never in a million years I would’ve thought that something like that would’ve existed. It was just too weird. so I think yes, even if this had never gotten dangerous, I think the group would still be a bad thing. I just think it was just too creepy unhealthy for Kara herself.
Mia (@dreaminofspace): If it had been a group meeting to talk about Supergirl, it wouldn’t have been bad. But because it was a cult, with rites of passage and prayers, that made it very unhealthy. Not saying all religion is bad, but when it moves into cult territory, that’s not good. It’s kind of that difference between fan and fanatic. One is fine, one is unhealthy.
Olivia (@atjogialove): I don’t think a group to appreciate Supergirl would be a bad thing but the way they did it wasn’t good. It’s shouldn’t be a cult that uses a religion incorrectly. Had it just been a group to show support for Supergirl and where people who have been saved by her could talk about their experiences I don’t think that would have been bad though.
Nicole (@ndintelman34): Probably. Any cult situation is a bad thing. You don’t want to blindly follow anyone. LOL
Tantoun (@littlemachine_): The cult freaked me out to be honest. I think that it would still be a bad thing since they have risked their lives to get saved. If the cult was more peaceful and less blindly following someone maybe then it would be ok but still, it felt really creepy.

2. Alex seemed interested in Sam’s life as a single mother. Do you think this suggests that Alex sees her future with either love or children, thinking that both is impossible?
Becca: I think at the beginning Alex, of course, didn’t want to get into a fight with Maggie about having children or not because she didn’t want Maggie to get upset and because Alex loves Maggie so much she even to put herself as second to grant Maggie’s wish about NOT having children. But I think Alex already reached the point where her heart is broken in two: between Maggie and having children. She obviously wants two but yes, I think she is seriously thinking about choosing children because she thinks that she cannot have either love and children at the same time while being with Maggie.
Mia: At the moment, yes, probably. At the moment she can’t see herself loving anyone but Maggie, and she won’t get to be a mom if she’s with Maggie, so I think Alex thinks she’ll either be a mom and single/forever heartbroken, or she’ll be happily married but childless. Tonight’s episode really set up the upcoming breakup. Even from the very first season it was clear Alex is overflowing with maternal instincts and love to give, so her not being able to give up on that dream seems very realistic to me. Still sad to see Sanvers go, this relationship means a lot to many, many people.
Olivia: I definitely think this shows Alex sees being a parent in her future. Especially after the finale I think it’s clear that kids will be what ultimately drives Maggie and Alex apart and I honestly think it’s realistic. There are things you bend on in a relationship- like what’s for dinner, but whether or not to have kids shouldn’t be something you compromise on.
Nicole: It seems like she feels like it is. It’s not, she just has to find that person that wants everything she wants. It’s sad that Maggie doesn’t.
Tantoun: I think that Alex really wanted kids. I also think that her agreeing to what Maggie wanted was mainly because she thought she could give it up. I hope she eventually finds both.

3. Clark Kent/Superman got a brief shoutout tonight. Do you hope to see Clark back on Supergirl soon, or should he stay away and let the show focus on girl power?
Becca: I wish to see more Clark on Supergirl this season to be honest! I’m not saying he has to show up on every episode but in my opinion, it would be nice to see a little bit more of him. I liked that on season 2, he showed up at the season premiere AND at the finale. So I think that was nice and enough for one season. Now I wish he could return soon.
Mia: I love when Superman guest stars! He’s only around for one or two episodes anyway, he’s not taking anything away from Supergirl. I love seeing Kara and Clark together, she’s so happy with him around. It’s not like he steals her thunder, he adds to it. Plus I’m a lifelong Superman fan, so seeing him in anything always makes me happy!
Olivia: I think Clark will be back at some point but I personally hope it’s not for a while. I love seeing Supergirl be able to shine as a hero, and hopefully we’ll get to see Kara come back into feeling like a hero without her suit soon.
Nicole: I’m a huge fan of Tyler Hoechlin so I say, bring him on! I always love seeing Superman and Supergirl work together!
Tantoun: God yes! I missed him. Even when superman is on the show his character still moves kara’s character further. He doesnt shadow her character from what we have seen of him so far.

4. It seems that Samantha is really bonding with Kara and her friends! How do you see that playing out as Sam transitions into Reign?
Becca: It was nice to see Sam bonding with Kara and the ladies on this episode. I think Sam needed that. I think that her dealing with work and also being a mom is really hard for her. She tries her best to be awesome at both but she feels like she needs to improve her work as a mother– which I think is nonsense because she does a great job at it. I honestly have no idea how is Sam going to turn into Reign… but my guess will be something bad will happen to Ruby and this will be the reason Reign will be born!?
Mia: It’s going to be interesting. Will the others know Sam is Reign? Will she be a full-time villain or will she be like Kara, who hides her alien identity and lives a double life? Will Sam find out Kara is Supergirl and use the friend group as an undercover way of gaining an upper hand on Kara and her emotions? So many questions! I can’t wait to watch this play out.
Olivia: I think when Sam transitions into Reign it will be hard for everyone, especially with them all becoming close so quickly. I think that’s part of why the show is doing it too- so the characters and the audience will go through lots of emotions as she transitions into Reign.
Nicole: Hopefully it will make her (Sam) question hurting her friend (Kara). I think it also leaves the group vulnerable because they trust Sam and won’t expect her to turn into the Worldkiller she was designed to be.
Tantoun: I’m clueless on that one. I really am. Would she and reign be like Hulk and Bruce Banner? Where both sides are aware of the other? Or will she be clueless and have blackouts when she is reign? Because if Kara recognizes Samantha as Reign, would she understand that they are two different people or would she condemn Sam for Reigns actions? I’m really curious to see how her arch will play out.

5. James didn’t get a whole lot of action tonight. Are you hoping to see Guardian back in the game soon?
Becca: Poor James. Sometimes I feel bad for him like I wish the writers would write a better storyline for him. At least the conversation he had with Kara was pretty good on this episode. So yes, I think I would love to see more of James/Guardian this season and also to see a better and more interesting storyline for him!
Mia: I’m not too fussed about Guardian, to be honest? It didn’t add much to the story in season 2 and it never established itself as a viable storyline. I love CatCo-James a lot more than Guardian-James. James does more good with his words and his kind heart than he does with his fists and big muscles throwing criminals around. I hope the Guardian storyline isn’t brought up much.
Olivia: I do hope we get to see the Guardian again soon- I love seeing him and Kara team up and I think having a black superhero on the show is great. But I also love seeing James as a friend to Kara and I’m glad we got to see that in this episode.
Nicole: I like seeing James help in any way possible. I don’t think he needs a suit or alter ego to be a member of the team.
Tantoun: I really didnt miss the guardian that much. I enjoyed seeing james more than I did the guardian.

6. Be honest: if you knew that Supergirl would save you, and it meant a chance to meet her, would you put yourself in danger?
Becca: Oh God. This was a very hard but also clever question. But… I have to say no. I would not put myself in danger. As much as I love Supergirl… I am just too scared of everything and I don’t see me putting myself in danger just for that. I am sorry! I am pretty sure there are tons of more opportunities to meet Supergirl in person and putting yourself in danger is not a wise option!
Mia: Not gonna lie, it would be tempting. But I would never do that on purpose. Her saving me could have prevented her from saving someone in actual life-threatening danger and I could never live with myself if I hindered their rescue.
Olivia: Part of me wants to say yes- because meeting Supergirl would be SO COOL!! But I also don’t know if I would have the courage to purposely put myself in danger. I think I’d more likely try to go to one of Lena’s speeches and hope she showed up.
Nicole: No. What if she didn’t get there in time? Then you’d just be dead. LOL
Tantoun: Heck no. I mean what if she is busy saving someone else and I end up dead?

7. If you could pick one character from any season of Supergirl to get a spin-off, who would it be and what would it be about?
Becca: This is another very tricky question my goodness! There are a bunch of awesome characters on this show it’s really hard for me to pick one. I would say Mon-El but I also wouldn’t want for him to leave the show because I really like him and I want to see more of him teaming up and also being in a relationship with Kara. So I have to say maybe… Silver Banshee? I absolutely loved her back on season 1! And I wish we could see more of her! I know she’s a villain but I still would like to see what her life was before and after being Silver Banshee! Plus I love Italia Ricci so, why not?!
Mia: Ooooh. I would choose… Winn. He would get a spin-off with Felicity (Arrow) and Cisco (The Flash), and it would be a show connecting the Arrowverse shows without needing it to be a full-blown crossover (also let’s pretend Supergirl is on the same Earth as Arrow and The Flash just for this). They could have like this computer base, tons of screens and it would be them behind the scenes of the actual hero-ing going on.
Olivia: Honestly? I think Lucy Lane could have a badass spin-off. I love Jenna and I’ve always wished we got to see more of Lucy. I think she was an underdeveloped and underused character in season one and I would love to see her hold her own on her own show.
Nicole: J’onn Jones. The character has been around since Smallville and I think him having his own show would work. He could go to another town and fight crime like he’s done alongside Superman and Supergirl with the occasional crossover of course.
Tantoun: Cat grant deserves one. Maybe about her life before she founded Catco and then a time jump to when she left Catco and see how her story goes from there.I think it would be interesting. Maybe have bits of her time at catco as well.

Okay, so maybe we aren’t totally down with the cult life
As much as we love Supergirl, we think tonight’s episode too things just a little too far. It would be remiss not to comment on Kara’s reaction to the cult. While many people would be flattered at the very least, Kara spent the entire episode nothing short of horrified, even before danger came into play. There was something exceedingly admirable about Supergirl flying around, insisting that she is not a god and begging not to be worshipped. Her attitude was a shining example of true heroism – all work and no reward. She made it clear that she is not in this for the recognition or the followers, and for that we praise her (but not praise her praise her.)
It appears the pieces have been put into place to get this season rolling – Sam is truly on her way to becoming Reign, Sanvers’ breakup seems inevitable, and was that a glimpse of Mon-el in the final moments? We can’t wait to see how it all plays out once these wheels really start turning.
