Sense8 Returning With A Bang In Good Old Fashioned Christmas Special Season Opener
For those of us who have been waiting eagerly for the start of Season 2 of Sense8, the wait is (almost) over! Netflix has released the first trailer for the Christmas episode that will kick off the next exciting installment of the phenomenal sci-fi show, along with a brief interview with co-creator Lana Wachowski on why she decided to start off the season with a holiday special. I also love the idea of the holiday special, if not just for the excuse of having 2 full hours of Sense8 as an early Christmas present! It might be just under 2 minutes long, but it’s still jam packed with sneak peeks at the drama crashing down on the newly awakened sensates. Picking up where the last season left off, we’re immediately drawn back into the interconnected lives as a series of heartwarming scenes try to convince us things are getting better. Flash forward thirty seconds and things begin falling apart at the seams, as they tend to when you’re dealing with
We get our first glance at actor Toby Onwumere, who replaces Aml Ameen as Capheus “Van Damme” Onyango at 0:15 for the second season. Although Ameen did a great job in the first season, I think it’ll be interesting to see how Onwumere breathes life into the character. All of our other favorites also appear, including Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Angel Silvestre, and Brian J. Smith, shown as they try to move forward with their lives while adapting to the new voices in their head.
Despite all the action, though, it is the developing relationships between the cluster that is the lifeblood of the show, and the trailer demonstrate this through a quick collage of the pairings (both platonic and romantic) from season one. While it’s easy to root for Will and Riley, the proverbial (albeit equally damaged) white knight and damsel-in-distress, I for one am very much waiting to see what becomes of Kala and Wolfgang and their potentially ill-fated romance as she tells him at 0:29 that there’s good hidden in him.
Of course, what is Sense8 without its share of intrigue and action? At 0:59, we get another glimpse at Whispers getting into Will’s head while he’s sharing a moment with Riley after Jonas issues a warning to one of the members of the cluster. Without the sedatives handy, what might happen this time? After all, given his history with Whispers, we’re still not entirely sure which side Jonas is truly on. We see more of Doona Bae’s Sun as she sits in prison, and I hope that she comes to realize what she has given up for the sake of family honor. We apparently will get several cluster gatherings, although why they are surrounded by dead/unconscious men with guns at one point is yet unknown.
As Lana Wachowski says in her interview, season two is about “these characters and what they’re experiencing makes them feel empowered…like they can do anything as long as they’re together, but at the same time have a way of making them feel more vulnerable and more alone than they have ever felt before.” If this is the theme that will be running through season two, I think we’ll all need to strap ourselves in for a 2-hour long emotional rollercoaster ride!
