Fallout, Mutations and Badass Women: We Sit Down with the Cast and Creative Team of “The Last Ship” at SDCC 2016
The cast & creative team of “The Last Ship” came to San Diego Comic Con to discuss season 3, already in progress on TNT. We had the chance to chat with Adam Baldwin (Mike Slattery), Bridget Regan (Sasha Cooper), and executive producer Steven Kane about the past two seasons and what’s coming up this season on the post apocalyptic drama.
1. There will be some consequences for Slattery over the pirate kidnapping
Adam Baldwin tells us that while Slattery takes responsibility for his crew being kidnapped, he might not just be his own guilt that’s effected. While the crew still respects their new CO, “There will be some answering for that,” Baldwin says. “But he mostly does good work!”

2. The Takehaya (Hiroyuki Sanada) character will move forward
Adam Baldwin tells us (and we’ve seen it in previews) that the pirate Takehaya will continue to play a role this season. But whether or not he’ll prove to be useful or a traitorous wretch that gets everyone into heaps more trouble is still up in the air. (Though honestly we’re predicting it’s the latter.)
3. The second half of the season will be about how what’s going on at home relates to what’s going on with Captain Chandler in Asia
Steven Kane talked about how fascinated the creative team was by how a society functions and rebuilds itself by a disaster like 9/10ths of the population being destroyed by a virus. Yes, there was cure. However, “All these questions arise about how do organize yourself and what democracy looks like.” But that wasn’t specifically what the ship was going through. So their challenge was to relate the two stories to one another, and that will inform the second half of this season.
4. The virus mutation becomes a big focus of the next few episodes
Now that the crew of the ship’s been reunited, they can explore the pirates accusations of being “poisoned” by the cure. Has the virus mutated? And as we know, there’s no more Dr. Scott to help them figure it out, all they’ve got are her notebooks and Dr. Rios. Will they figure it out?

5. Sasha will play another leadership force on the Nathan James
Though Sasha Cooper has never been on a naval destroyer and doesn’t outrank some of the men, she’s certainly going to be a force to be reckoned with. “She is the expert in this region that they’re in…She’s an opinionated character and she lends her voice whenever she can.” She also said it was because Sasha was so comfortable with Tom because of their shared history. While that can cause conflict, Sasha and Tom seem to understand each other, both from their past and through their shared experience of having lost spouses.
Will romance blossom on the close quarters of the Nathan James between Sasha and Tom? Will Takehaya prove to be a massive threat to the ship and increase the problems the ship is facing in Asia? What sort of answering will Slattery have to do over allowing himself and part of his crew to be kidnapped? How will the situation on the Nathan James in Asia and the re-building of the United States effect each other going forward? Watch The Last Ship on TNT on Sundays at 9/8c to find out, and check out the new trailer for the second half of season 3 and a an extended peak at this Sunday’s episode!
