Recently, TV After Dark had the pleasure of speaking to Dan, who spilled some secrets about his character, what the future holds for Kelsey and Thad, and his role in the highly anticipated film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens nationwide this Friday. Dying to learn more? Listen to our interview with Dan below!
TVAD | Dan, you seem like a sweet guy in real life. Is it difficult to play a character like Thad?
Dan Amboyer | I think it’s really a fun opportunity, you know. Nobody I don’t think ever wants to become an actor to play themselves, like a kid when you play dress up and make believe you always want to play something very different than you. I think that’s kind of why I got involved in acting in the first place, to always be challenging myself with roles that’s different and exciting and not me. I really enjoy it because it’s a chance to do something and say things I probably wouldn’t do in my real life.
TVAD | What do you enjoy the most about playing Thad?
DA | The most about playing the role he kind of doesn’t have a filter. What he says and what he thinks and he has strong opinions and you know where we stand with him. Me I’m a little more quiet guy in person. I’m more of an introvert.
I was a really shy, chubby kid and I was the really quiet one in school. Acting became kind of the thing that you wouldn’t expect somebody who’s like that to enjoy it so much but it really became that thing where I found an outlet for my own voice. I really gravitated towards that because it’s so different than what I usually do.
TVAD | Hilary seems like an extremely fun person to hang out with. What’s one of your favorite things about working with her?
DA | There’s so many great things about her. I’ve only known her as a person that has always been kind of like a friend to me and she’s so warm on set. We always hang out. Her dressing room door is kind of always open and welcomed to anyone who wants to come in and chill with her. She’ll bring this crazy cookie recipe that we all love so much that she’ll do every once in awhile because we gotta watch eating too many cookies all the time when you know you’re in front of the camera especially when you have shirtless scenes coming. She does really fun things like that. Hilary will bring her dog and Molly will her bring her dog. Sutton will also bring her dog. There’s always animals on set.
I have a parrot and everybody wants me to bring my parrot. The problem is we shoot so much on location and it;s been in the Fall and Winter. My parrot is a tropical bird and I don’t want to bring her out in the blizzarding … so we’ll see what happens with season 3.
TVAD | HilaryNews on Twitter wants to know how did you and the cast react to Younger being picked up for a third season before season two aired?
DA | It was really exciting. We were all in LA together and we were doing the TCA’s press tour the week before the second season would start airing and we were all backstage and Keith Cox the president of TV Land came out and was like “Hey guys, just so you know, we just put out a press release and it’s actually happening and we’re going to announce it right now!” We were all together when we heard that It’s officially going to happen and Darren was there for that too.
TVAD | Why do you think Thad has such a hard time with monogamy?
DA | You know… the other thing is too I was thinking about this and I was like “do we know when that video was done? Do we know?”. I did admit that I was unfaithful at the end of the last season. Kelsey, too was not that faithful with that Swedish author, right? The video was probably more recent. I wonder what that is? Some guys just seem to have that thing that doesn’t let them fully commit in that way. It’s like some kind of fear or something. For me, in my mind, that video happened before the engagement.
TVAD | Do you think the fans would see it that way?
DA | It would be cool if they did. Team Thad love! Team Thad! For me, I took the engagement episode very seriously. It meant a lot to me and I think it meant a lot to Hillary. It meant both of our characters coming together was like a fresh new chapter for us. It never really gets explained when the video was from. In my head, it could be the week before maybe even the day before.
TVAD | Do you think Kelsey and Thad will eventually be able to overcome his latest indiscretion?
DA | If there is opportunity, I will do my best to make it up to her. No and’s if’s about it. If the indiscretion was before the engagement there might be hope to work it out. I think it would be kind of hard to forgive someone if that happened right after you got engaged. When you play characters like this, you can’t be like you’re playing a bad guy. You have to reason it out to make sense to you. You want to root for the person when you’re playing them.
TVAD | You’re set to star in Batman v. Superman which we’re all excited to see. Are you allowed to tell us anything about your character?
DA | It sounds so crazy when you do a film like that you have to sign like 3 different NDA’s to cover every possible thing that you can’t talk to anyone about. It’s so frustrating for me because I want to be able to talk more about it and to tell y’all what’s up!
TVAD | Are you on the bad side or the good side?
DA | You know… that is difficult. It’s all about perspective. From my perspective, I was 100 percent doing my job getting things done so I was definitely a good guy.
TVAD | Did you get to interact with any of the main cast while you were filming your scenes? If so, what was that like for you?
DA | At that time everything was still being figured out. There were costume tests being done and they were fine tuning what the characters were actually going to look like. It was really cool for a lot of people to see the new iconic version of what their character was going to look like in this film. Some of those costumes are like their own person. You could slide into it and then slide out of it and it would look like a shell. It’s funny to see it roll by you.
TVAD | If you could jump into one costume would it be Batman or Superman?
DA | I would say, Batman because I grew up loving those movies they were part of my childhood. The black is kind of a sexy look, right?
TVAD | Prior to being cast in Batman v. Superman, did you love comics or have a favorite superhero?
DA | My brother was the comic book guy he was obsessed with them and that’s kind of his thing and he’s older and I’d let him do his thing. I would hang out at comic book stores with him, but I’d bring along my plays and Shakespeare anthologies. Those were my comic hero.
TVAD | Thad has some of the most hilarious dialogue on the show. Are most of your lines improvised or scripted?
DA | Most of it is scripted. When you start working on a show for a while over the course of a couple of seasons, there’s kind of a discussion where I’ll add a few things, but from there on, they would kind of anticipate if I wanted to add something, what that might be? I feel like they kind of read my mind when I get the script sometimes. Some of the writers love Thad so much and it’s like a great collection of brains that creates lines and these words that are all so awesome. It’s really a collaboration of creating the character and what comes out of his mouth. I enjoy it because it’s people that you would never expect to be writing that character like a funny girl in her twenties, thirties or forties as some of the writers are. The complete opposite person is behind the curtain writing these great lines for Thad.
TVAD | Kelsey said Thad liked to binge-watch Gilmore Girls? What’s your go-to binge-watch show?
DA | Now that Sutton Foster will be on Gilmore Girls for the revival, that’s going to be my new binge watching show. I’m on House of Cards right now and I can’t wait.
TVAD | What do you like to do for fun when you’re not filming?
DA | I have a lot of animals. I have 3 cats and a parrot so that’s a lot of work. My project for the weekend is I’m really blessed that I have a garden actually in Manhattan so I am currently weeding the garden and I’m getting that ready for Spring. I workout a ton. I keep it fresh constantly finding new gyms or new groups of people to experiment with.
