The two meet again, bringing forth their darkness and light
The series premiere of Cloak & Dagger opens with a young Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) preparing for ballet class. As she’s having a hard time in class, we also see a young Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) taking a stroll through the streets when he meets his older brother standing with some friends who are contemplating breaking into a car. Tandy and her father crash into a truck, which sends the car over a bridge. The cops finally catch up to Ty and his brother, but one of them shoots and kills Tyrone’s brother. Ty jumps in after him. While they both try to fight their way back up to the surface, a light shocks them — knocking them unconscious for a moment. While Tandy sees dark shadows, Ty sees a bright light. They both reach for it connecting hands unknowingly. Tandy wakes up beside Tyrone on the beach. When she leaves, she takes his jacket and when he finally wakes up, he takes her ballet shoe from a tree.
Some years later, Tandy and her friend Liam (Carl Lundstedt) are checking over their money when they decide to go to a party later that night. Tyrone coincidentally gets invited to the same party. At the party, Tandy and Tyrone meet again when she “accidentally” bumps into him. After realizing his wallet is stolen, he chases her to a cemetery — where they run into each other and fly apart after he grabs her hand. They both notice that she has a light shining from her hand and he has dark matter circling around his.
Tandy gets her first vision when she’s at home and her mom touches her to see about a cut on her hand. Later that night after sneaking into a ballet show, she’s backed into an alleyway and attacked. She gets her first dagger and stabs her attacker in the stomach before he can rape her.

Ty goes to bed and wakes up in the back of the car of the cop who killed his brother. He finds drugs back there, throws the powder in the cop’s face, and runs off. He ducks down under a tarp and when he pulls it back over his head, he’s back in his room with the bullet that was shot at him, lodged in his trash can. He pulls Tandy’s ballet shoe out, while she sits in the church with his hoodie on.
When the second episode opens, we see a vehicle that’s been crashed into a tree. Tandy discloses what happened to her the night before to Liam and concludes that she has to get out of town because she’s afraid that the man she stabbed will have the police come after her. Ty contemplates how he could handle the situation between him and the officer while talking to the priest at school. The priest says that he lets everything settle until it boils over and Ty struggles to get past why the officer shouldn’t be suffering like he is. Later on, Ty gets his first vision.
Tandy starts to leave town without Liam when she gets a call that he’s been picked up by the police, but before she can make it far, she crashes into a tree at the same time that Ty goes after the police officer and successfully shoots him.

1. We got two great episodes! What are your immediate reactions to the first two episodes of Cloak & Dagger?
Kimberly (@candypie22): My immediate reaction to Cloak & Dagger’s first two episodes was gut-wrenching, and it left me desperate for leads Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson to reunite.
Haley (@lucifersearp): My immediate reaction is speechless. So many topics that are apart of how teens have to live were seen on screen for more than just a second. Wish is just hands down amazing for me.
Christina (@cherry_1027): My first thought was the cinematography is amazing. Also, these characters are going to be driven by what’s about to happen to them. They’ve each been through so much at a young age, it’s interesting to see that play out.
Jess (@irissknowles): I can honestly say these were some of the best pilot episodes for a new series I have seen in a while! Olivia and Aubrey’s portrayals of their respective characters were so authentic, and the origin stories for both Tandy and Tyrone immediately grabbed my interest. Seeing both of them having such tragic events occur at such a young age and then seeing the repercussions of that in their present lives was so compelling. I can’t wait to see what else awaits for the season.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): I am honestly surprised at how amazing these first two episodes were. I was either on the edge of my seat or screaming at the tv. After watching these two episodes there is no denying this show has promise.

2. They immediately explored some huge topics in the first episode. How did you feel about the way the addiction and police brutality situations were handled?
Kimberly (@candypie22): Cloak & Dagger literally pulls the cloak off of real situations facing our country. Issues like racial tension, social anxiety, bullying, police brutality, sexual assault, and homelessness are tackled head-on. Cloak & Dagger showed the terrifying reality that so many young people face today (Now blasting Childish Gambino This Is America).
Haley (@lucifersearp): As someone who is not a person of color I can’t 100% say this but I thought that it was addressed very well. Unlike most tv shows it isn’t just brushed to the side. And the fact that’s how the episode started was a huge leap of chance and I personally think it was worth it.
Christina (@cherry_1027): I think it was handled very well for a first episode. Did not glorify addition. Showed Tandy struggling with the situation and showed why she has this addiction in the first place. Hoping they show how it’s affecting her life more and coming out of addition throughout the season. The police brutality is a heavy important topic in our world right now. I’m glad they showed a glimpse of what it could be like and what happens to families after something like a bad shooting happens. C&D did not stray away.
Jess (@irissknowles): I’m really pleased with the fact that they didn’t hesitate with jumping into complex issues. The scene where Tandy realizes that her mom stole all the money she had stashed away to buy drugs to “celebrate” was so well-acted and raw with emotion – it really shed light on the frustration Tandy must have felt growing up with a mother with an addiction problem. Additionally, we see Tandy throughout the episode using drugs as a way to cope. I thought the issue of addiction in Tandy’s life was introduced well and I’m interested to see how her character will evolve and change in a way that she can hopefully overcome it. The police brutality scenes were just as heart-wrenching as I had expected. I think the most impactful thing about them was that they felt completely real. Leading up to the scene where Billy gets shot, I could feel myself holding my breath from all the tension even though I ultimately knew exactly what was going to happen, due to the devastating frequency of police brutality against black people in society today. I think having scenes that portrayed police brutality so honestly is something very necessary in our media today in order to spread awareness on the issue.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): I hate corrupt cops first off and to see a kid shot for no reason but because the cop got startled which I can understand but two times he shot him. To hear him talk about how his uncle will fix this makes me sick and listening to the Captain tell the parents he wasn’t shot and there is no man who has that appearance on the squad. Addiction is a real problem and they portrayed it in a real way. You understood why she was doing it and you saw how her mother was addicted even before everything happened. I love that they show Tandy looking at the pills but instead of taking them she puts on Tyrone’s sweatshirt and goes to sleep.

3. The visuals are amazing on this show. Which scene would you say you loved watching the most?
Kimberly (@candypie22): This is hard…it was so many amazing visuals…but I love how Tyrone (Cloak) woke up on top of the Roxxon Energy Corporation building. That shot looked AMAZING, can you say new screen cover!!!!
Haley (@lucifersearp): I personally loved the scene where Tandy stabs the guy in the stomach. Not only does it further the plot but it truly looks well done and it’s meaningful in multiple.
Christina (@cherry_1027): The first connection between Tandy and Tyrone or Tyrandy dubbed by already dedicated fandom. When they are floating away in the water but their powers come out and they reach out for each other as if it was instinct. That was so beautiful.
Jess (@irissknowles): The visuals were stunning! The scene that really stood out to me was near the very beginning, in the lake, after Tandy and her dad crash and Tyrone jumps in after Billy. The whole visual of them nearly drowning, but then Tyrone reaching out towards the bright light and Tandy reaching towards the darkness until they finally clasped hands was so symbolic, and the amazing soundtrack in the background just enhanced it.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): I really loved when Tandy & Tyrone first touched. The connection they share finally revealing itself is what I was waiting for the whole episode.

4. The death of Tyrone’s brother is already playing a huge impact on his life. What do you think the new conflicts arising will do to his relationship with his parents?
Kimberly (@candypie22): With Tyrone gradually learning about his power and wanting revenge (an eye for an eye) for what happened to his brother, this will for sure cause more stress on his family and on me because all we want for Tyrone is to be SAFE!!! I’m ready and not ready for the tension we all will face in the coming episodes.
Haley (@lucifersearp): I think that it will push the strings of their relationship. Secrets usually do that but their family has made it through one of the hardest things to go through. So, in the end, I hope it will bring them closer together.
Christina (@cherry_1027): These new conflicts will pull him further away from his parents, I believe. He wants to find his brother’s killer and has changes happening to him all at once. This will be interesting to see how Tyrone juggles everything.
Jess (@irissknowles): I interpreted that scene where Tyrone’s powers are activated when he touches his mom, and he sees a vision of her witnessing both him and Billy be killed and buried as a sort of projection of one of her greatest fears. From that, I definitely think Tyrone’s mom is still harboring a lot of trauma from the loss of Billy. With Tyrone so dead set on seeking vengeance on the cop responsible for his brother’s death, along with the dangers that are sure to come along with discovering his superpowers and learning how to use them, I think there will definitely be more tension between Tyrone and his parents, with them worrying about his safety in light of these new conflicts, out of fear of losing another child.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): Let me just say that scene when his brother is shot made me cry. I think moving forward things are only going to get more complicated for Tyrone and him trying to balance school, his newfound powers, basketball, and home. He is seeing much more into what goes on in his mother’s mind and how scared she is. I think they have a strong connection and maybe one day he will confide in her. However, I do see a strain happen only because Tyrone is going through some really tough times especially within himself and he doesn’t think anyone else will understand.

5. Tandy is handling a lot of demons both from her past and present. Do you think her abilities and connection to Tyrone will keep her from running away this time?
Kimberly (@candypie22): Yes, I think Tandy is staying in New Orleans. Especially after episode two’s cliffhanger ending…they both have to find out what is happening to them.
Haley (@lucifersearp): I think that since he also doesn’t really know what’s happening that it will bring them closer together. They’re both trying to live out their lives (from getting out of New Orleans to getting beat up in the locker room) but also having to grasp their new powers which they have no one to talk to but each other.
Christina (@cherry_1027): I think since she has no solid foundation Tandy is going to stay and see what can be with Tyrone. They obviously share a connection. Not only with these changes but also they were both there together when they lost their loved ones.
Jess (@irissknowles): I do. I think Tandy’s tendency to run away stems from the instability in her household growing up. I think that eventually, Tyrone will be able to be an anchor for her and keep her grounded, especially since they share that experience of gaining their powers together and saving one another when they were kids. Just the fact that Tandy kept Tyrone’s hoodie from that night and seems to wear it when she’s feeling vulnerable is a sign of how powerful their connection is. As both their personal relationship and the connection of the powers continue to grow, I think Tyrone will help Tandy to feel safe enough that she no longer feels the need to run away.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): I hope so. I really think the connection is something we need to explore more of. These two together are such vital parts of this story and their connection is always going to be there and instead of running away, she needs to face it head-on. They need each other without even realizing it yet.

6. What is one thing that you hope happens in the first season?
Kimberly (@candypie22): The short answer is MORE, I need more backstory on Cloak and Dagger whole universe.
Haley (@lucifersearp): I hope that they continue to show the important issues that everyday teens face. Most teen shows like to say, “Oh everything is perfect! They have a perfect life!” which, in my opinion, is wildly unrealistic. I also hope they continue with the depth of the characters and not shove them into any relationship they can find just because they feel like it, which is a downfall of a lot of teen shows today.
Christina (@cherry_1027): I hope to see Tyrone and Tandy conquering their darkness by the end of the season. As an added, the hint of Tyrandy (my shippy heart already loves the divine pairing)
Jess (@irissknowles): I am really excited to see Tandy and Tyrone using their powers in tandem. We’ve already seen from these first two episodes alone how strong their abilities are; their strength will only be amplified when eventually we see them fighting together as a team.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): I want the cop Conners to get what he deserves. I hate corrupt cops to an extreme. I also really hope to see more of Tandy & Tyrone talking about what happened between them and moving forward with all the information.

7. What unique aspect of the premiere episodes is keeping you hooked to watch more?
Kimberly (@candypie22): To me, Cloak and Dagger is a surprisingly dark Marvel TV series on a teenage-driven network, I don’t remember how many times I screamed out OMG…because I couldn’t believe Marvel was going in on certain situations. But wanting to understand Tandy and Tyrone and their universe is keeping me hooked to come back for more.
Haley (@lucifersearp): There were multiple things that have me coming back next week. First of all the show is crazy down to earth. It’s amazing to be able to relate to a character which is hard to find on tv. Another thing is the dynamic of Tandy and Tyrone. It makes you wonder how they will grow towards one another because they haven’t grown close yet.
Christina (@cherry_1027): Definitely that it’s an interracial superhero show. It’s not afraid to go into deep subjects and of course, the cinematography is key! The soundtrack already is fire. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the season.
Jess (@irissknowles): The immediate chemistry between Tyrone and Tandy was so tangible, even though they only had a few scenes together. I can’t wait to continue to see their relationship grow – Olivia and Aubrey work incredibly well together.
Noelle (@archiebettyotp): Honestly the characters and the stories. Each character is so intriguing and seeing the connection between Tandy & Tyrone really sets the tone for the show. I love having the truth shown to us about what that cop said that night he shot Billy and how the cop is corrupt. I think every character with their own storyline yet still connected is really what keeps me hooked.

With its amazing cinematography and soundtrack, Cloak & Dagger brings to life and silently captures the stories of Tandy and Tyrone
Cloak & Dagger’s premiere episodes set the season up for a promising future. The cinematography on the show gives it that extra pop to really draw out the comic book vibe. It’s what keeps us invested in the episodes even in those silent moments. And we must not forget about how amazing the soundtrack is. It is definitely a key factor in holding the show together. We love how the music is used and can’t wait to hear more. Although the scenes of the two main characters experiencing similar events is great to watch, it’s kind of choppy having to catch them as the scenes continuously switch back and forth. However, the dual scenes are a great way to tell the stories of these two characters, because we get to see the moments that would bring them together. The mystery of what the season is going to be about isn’t particularly clear — aside from the two teenagers learning more about what’s happening to them. We hope that next week’s episodes will give us a little bit more insight into that, so that we can become even more invested.

Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph are both great in the premiere episodes! We can already see the amazing chemistry even with the few scenes they have across the two episodes. Once the two get more scenes together, we can already see that they’ll be a dynamic duo. We love seeing the family dynamics play out and have already become attached to these two teens’ lives.
We’re absolutely going to tune back into this show next week! It’s filled with amazing visuals and complimentary music to match. The story has shown that it can stand on its own without a lot of action early on and that is something that sets it apart from so many other Marvel shows. Freeform has definitely hit the jackpot with this new addition and we hope they continue to do right by it. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Tandy and Tyrone this season!
