‘Wynonna Earp’ finally picks up the pace of the premiere with “She Ain’t Right” and slams down on the gas pedal. It’s shocks galore and jaw-drops all-round.

So…

We’re not quite sure what to do with ourselves. It’s hard to surmise an episode when you’re left hanging on a cliffhanger like that, and not have that as the only thing running through your mind.

In this episode, we first catch Waverly-“Gooverly”-walking across the homestead, snow crunching under her shoes. It’s freezing cold, and she’s holding a knife, and then eventually she picks up Dolls’ signature military dog tags. Wynonna catches her and wraps her in her coat, and Waverly, in a brief moment of weakness, nearly breaks down. It’s our first sign that actually, whatever’s possessed her is wrestling with her subconscious, and she knows it. But Waverly remains strong, and hastily shoves Dolls’ tags in Wynonna’s coat pocket.

Waverly gets weirder. She eagerly volunteers for an undercover case with Lucado (Kate Drummond). And though it gives Dominique Provost-Chalkley ample opportunity to show off those pipes, Wynonna’s suspicions grow.

The Gardners are full-on steaming to be the big baddies of the season with their mysterious corpse-ritual-style-stuff. Doc (Tim Rozon) and Rosita (Tamara Duarte) team up with Jeremy (Varun Saranga) to save Dolls (Shamier Anderson).

But the real team-up we’re excited to see is between Wynonna and Nicole again, who’s noted from the first episode (“you taste different”) that something’s off with Waverly. But ultimately, it’s Wynonna who deals with the brunt of it as the demon reveals Waverly’s been resisting her, and Wynonna would be so much easier to possess.

By the end of episode four, we’re left with an heir who can’t touch Peacemaker, a Waverly in imminent danger-just as Dolls returns and just as our big baddie’s revealed.

Oh, balls.

1. Shall we start with That Scene? Yes? Yep. I mean, there was so much depth in what that demon said. About Waverly’s strength; Wynonna’s ‘easiness’. Definitely tells you more about Wynonna. But here’s one: if what happened hadn’t happened, would Wynonna have pulled the trigger-and why/why not?

Ok first off, Dom and Mel acted the hell out of that scene and it was INCREDIBLE to watch. Also, people who thought that “kiss” was sexual? Y’all are creepy. Now moving on, with everything Wynonna has been through I’m not sure she would have had the strength to pull the trigger. I’m guessing she would have tried to talk the demon? goo? whatever? out of Waverly and offered herself up in Waverly’s place.

It pains me to say it…but…yes (eek don’t hate me). I can’t quite think about the why (yes I’m avoiding) right now, this episode has melted my brain and it’s still smoking like that bone claw demon dudes face!

Firstly can I say WTF!? Twist! Cliffhanger!

I don’t think Wynonna would have shot Waverly, she knows her sister is still there beneath the demon. You could see from her face she wouldn’t pull the trigger. I don’t think Wynonna could loose another sister, she would do whatever it takes to save Waverly at this point.

2. Because she likes to bottle stuff up, do you think Wynonna will try to suppress the demon like Waverly did, too? Can she? She can’t even hold Peacemaker. In our review, we’d said what if for once, Purgatory saves Wynonna rather than vice versa? Could you see that scenario happening?

I think Wynonna is so overwhelmed with her life and everything she has faced that she’ll have a much harder time supressing the demon. I’m sure she’s going to try but I think it’s going to be a very hard battle for her. She already has so many internal demons, that adding one more to the pile is going to be difficult to handle. I could totally see Purgatory rallying together to save Wynonna, sort of like Sunnydale once acknowledged Buffy, the town is now seeing that Wynonna is the savior.

I think she will try but it will be extremely difficult for her, so I don’t think she will be able to hold this demon back as much as Waverly did. Having already seen a bit of Wynonna’s wild side I wonder what the next level of wild is gonna be?

Purgatory saves Wynonna, interesting. But, aren’t the Purgatory peeps a little blind when it comes to the demons. I see the gang saving her but not sure I have a clear picture of Purgatory saving Wynonna.

I think she’ll try, but ‘try’ being the main word here. I think Wynonna has a lot of darkness inside and the demon will feed off that. It says that Wynonna is not as strong as Waverly and I believe it’s referring to her willpower and state of mind.

As for Purgatory saving Wynonna…possibly. Although I think the core gang alongside Black Badge will do most of the work to get rid of the demon.

3. Dolls is back! What did you think of Shamier Anderson’s timely comeback (especially the initial scene where Wynonna finds Dolls in the barn?)

I’m so happy to see Dolls! That scene in the barn was excellent. When Wynonna knocked Dolls out I cackled. I love Dolls and I love his dynamic with Wynonna but honestly I’m just glad he’s back to maybe we can find out what kind of dragon he is!

Dolls is a dragon! Yes! How awesome is this? I’m glad to see Dolls back, the gang is kind of complete apart from black gooey demon invading whoever’s body it likes! I do wonder if the serum that he took will have any longer lasting side effects though? The barn scene was a great re -introduction as it shows that really he doesn’t have control of himself or his powers.

4. What is up with Mercedes, Beth and Tucker? Is it a Waverly!Demon type possession situation? Tucker, despite his weirdness, seems the only one out of his family who hasn’t been creepified (that’s a word now…)

I’m guessing that since faces seem to have been stolen this is more than possession. Still seems demonic but I don’t think people can wear other people’s faces so well. (Unless it’s Rosewood and an episode of “Pretty Little Liars”, their mask maker did one hell of a job.) And Tucker may not have been “creepiefied” but the dude’s still one of the creepiest things in the show!

Nah it doesn’t seem to be a possession situ, more a creepified (embracing the word now) borrow your face (gross!) situation.

I smiled when I saw Mercedes again after last week, even though it’s not really her. I look forward to finding out more about what Fakecedes and Faketh are and what they’re up to. Tucker makes my skin crawl without being creepified! So I get that the demons see potential in him. I was left wondering…which girl?

I don’t think it’s exactly a demon possession as I believe their bodies are dead? So it’s maybe like a reincarnation or the black ladies impersonating them. I do still wonder what they want in Purgatory, as nothing really seems obvious right now. Maybe the plate that was inside the suitcase?

Also I will be interested to see if Tucker is also ‘turned’ or he just stays human and they use him like puppet to do some of their dirty work.

5. It seems Doc’s isolation was because he was probably the most integral to Dolls/BBD without anyone knowing-and because he was “the one Dolls could lose” (ugh, Doc…). Do you see Doc and Dolls fighting side by side once more? What about Rosita? What’s next for her?

It’s looking like Doc and Dolls will be fighting side by side again. That handshake certainly seemed to indicate that. I guess the deciding factor though could be what happens with the Wynonna/Dolls/Doc triangle. If that blows up I’d imagine team work may be a bit tricky. I don’t know what’s next for Rosita but I do hope she sticks around. She’s snarky and smart, and I would love to see her and Wynonna spend more time interacting.

Loaded question. They have their disagreements sure, but Hell Yeah! I think they make a good team, especially where Wynonna is concerned and now with the possession transfer I can almost imagine a bromance starting to form.

Rosita, really peaked my interest this episode, I really want to know more about her back story! She may be a wicked chemist, but I also think she is a wicked something else, just not sure what…!

Yes, I think Doc and Dolls will work together again, there seems to be some mutual respect there. Maybe Doc will even try to help Dolls control his inner Dragon!?

Rosita? Well I don’t even know if she’s one of the good guys or not at this point. We haven’t seen much of her aside from bar tending and making Doll’s serum. I’m still on the fence as to what role she will play for the rest of season.

6. When Nicole finds out Waverly’s been a demon this whole time (or at least possessed) how do you think they’ll work through it?

I think there is potential for a bit of stepping back. Nicole might feel like she has taken advantage in some way, or at least have doubts about some of Waverly’s actions/decisions in relation to them. It might be a little awkward, but I think they will talk it through. Sometimes it takes a while but they usually get to the ‘being open about stuff’ part sooner rather than later.

I think Waverly will have her own stuff to deal with first. I did what while I was possessed?! So there is the internal battle to deal with for her, which in turn has an impact on the Wayhaught relationship.

Talk! Or at least I hope so. They really need to communicate more, I think it would help them a lot. They are a new couple and this could be something that makes or breaks them. I mean I’d be freaked out if my girlfriend had been possessed and I never even knew! I’m glad Nicole had some inklings that something was wrong but I don’t think anyone would have guessed what exactly!

I do think they’ll struggle for a while. Waverly will probably feel guilty about some of her choices and Nicole will feel hurt and betrayed even though it’s not really Waverly’s fault.

7. Waverly’s been told by Bobo she isn’t an Earp, and then she goes and gets possessed by demon-goo. When we see her breakdown in the beginning, we know she’s aware something’s wrong. She’ll find out of the possession imminently, surely? What’s next for Waverly? That’s a big question, I know. But where on earth does she head from here?

First and foremost I think she’s going to try and save her sister. Even if she has doubts about her Earpiness, one thing Waverly seems very sure of is her bond with Wynonna so I can’t see her just leaving Wynonna to be demon fodder. I do think though, as she’s trying to save her sister, she’s also going to try and solve the mystery of who she is. Hopefully she and Nicole will be working together to solve the mystery of Waverly’s bloodline.

Waverly pretty much knew there was something wrong with her in the end and was trying to fight it. That opening scene really took my breath away, it was really beautiful. I think she will feel guilty about Dolls, things she has said and done. But, in the end no matter what anyone says she will stick to her principles (which are the Earpiest). Blood means nothing, she is an Earp (no matter what, even if she might be revenant spawn).

Waverly needs to get rid of that demon stat! I think a lot of her storyline for the next few episodes will be fighting the ‘goo demon’ one way or another. We still don’t know if all of the demon has left her? A small bit may remain inside her and she’ll need to find a way of getting rid of it from herself and Wynonna.

After that, well, there are still many revenants and demons in the Ghost River Triangle!

8. I wanted to end this with A Great Philosophical Question, but then Dominique Provost-Chalkley started singing. Okay, give it to me. If Wynonna Earp was a musical what would it be, why, and who would play who?

Oh good lord! I have no idea! I would say something like Rocky Horror as it’s totally nuts, pretty camp and not afraid to push boundaries! As for who plays you, feel free to debate that amongst yourselves!

FINAL VERDICT: This cruised into “best episode of the season” territory and oh boy, what a journey. A season finale-worthy cliffhanger…at the end of episode four? What awaits us in episode twelve?!

This was like riding the scariest rollercoaster you’ve ever ridden again and again until you vomit. Except we vomited rainbows and joy.

Every scene that flickered on we had the sensation we were on a rickety upwards climb, and we gulped as we peeked downwards. Then one after the other, like relentless soured fruit pelted at you, we were slammed with revelations and twists. There was hilarity, especially-and rarely-with Shamier Anderson’s Dolls. And it’s rare Shamier Anderson gets to full-on laugh and be his bubbly self. Then there was sheer creepiness with the Gardners.

After the comedy of Waverly going undercover (again) faded and we only slightly got over Dominique Provost-Chalkley’s angelic voice, it was back to business. Doc and Rosita were cooking up again. Wynonna and Nicole teamed up to find out what happened to the girl they most loved.

And then there was absolute devastation.

To say we could give any indication of what episode five will be like would be an utter lie. It’s honestly a cliffhanger we’d expect off a season finale.

We’re so lost.
