Have you come off your SDCC high? Great news! We’ve still got videos and interviews, and we’re talking about what we learned for The Vampire Diaries at SDCC!
After all these years, one of our favorites, The Vampire Diaries, will be coming to an end (sob)! The final season won’t be 22 episodes, it will be a lean 16, but executive producer Julie Plec is confident they’ll be able to wrap it up in that amount of time. One of the best things Julie Plec told us at SDCC is that they’re going to be trying to celebrate the first season as much as possible. Who knows what will make it into the final script, but a Julie said ideas that have been tossed around the writers’ room include a “Miss Mystic Falls” pageant, a decade dance, and a Founder’s Day. We love those ideas, Julie! We can’t wait to see what makes the final cut. Plec seems to completely understand the nostalgia fans feel for the show, and her team of writers seems to be pretty intent on honoring that!
“There is nothing written in stone, but Nina made me a promise when she left that she would come back and be part of the goodbye, and I intend to hold her hand to that, and I’m sure she intends to…We just have to figure it out.”
Since then, of course, things have been updated. A quick peek at Nina Dobrev’s IMDB reveals it’s been updated- and that she’ll be playing Elena in the finale. Obviously, our heads exploded and we’re just waiting for more official confirmation.

Since previous seasons have seen our main characters scattered about working on different problems, or at least different ways to solve the same problem, this season that will change. Michael Malarkey says that the rest of the gang will be united trying to track down Damon and Enzo. We’re also gonna find out why those two went on that killing rampage, and what the endgame is. Looks like there will be a new big bad in Vampire Diaries, and according to Malarkey, “It is a being of some sort.”

The Vampire Diaries has been on for eight years, and Kat Graham is totally right- you would think they’d done it all! But she assures us they absolutely haven’t. Whatever is controlling Enzo and Damon right now, and how they’re controlling them, it will feel very different from anything the show has done in the past.
