WGN’s “Underground” Releases Casting/Production News
Can’t wait for Season 2 of WGN’s hit series Underground? That’s cool, neither can we! Good thing WGN released some news on season 2 of the show in order to tide us over. Production on season 2 begins Monday, August 29th in Savannah, GA. In addition, we got some great casting news!
First, Amirah Vann (Ernestine) has been upgraded from a recurring guest star to a series regular (we were kind of surprised she wasn’t a series regular already, given that she was one of the best things about the series season 1). We’re excited to see what’s in store for her in season 2 because the finale left Ernestine way up in the air.
Then we’ve got the new characters! Aisha Hinds (“Under the Dome”, “True Blood”, Star Trek: Into Darkness) will play Harriet Tubman. No description necessary, she’ll be on the twenty dollar bill and on Underground to compliment Rosalee’s new mission. Jasika Nicole (“Fringe,” “Scandal”) will play Georgia, an abolitionist with a covert station along the Underground whose quiet confidence hides secrets of her own. Can’t wait to see Jasika on television again, Fringe fans should be excited to see her back in what sounds like a fantastic role. Michael Trotter (“Rosewood”) will play Biographer, an astute observer of people who lives through the lives of others often fearful of taking chances, and Jesse Luken (“Justified,” 42) will play Smoke, the fearless second in command of Patty Cannon’s infamous gang of slave catchers.
Series regulars continuing include Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Rosalee; Aldis Hodge as Noah; Christopher Meloni as August Pullman; (SPOILER ALERT after that CRAZY season 1 finale) Alano Miller as Cato; Jessica de Gouw as Elizabeth Hawkes; and Marc Blucas as John Hawkes.
Underground, which tells the unflinching story of some of America’s valiant heroes—enslaved people who risked their lives to reach freedom—was recently honored with three CableFax Awards, including Best New Program, Best Historical Show/Series and Best Showrunners, Misha Green and Joe Pokaski.
