It’s that time of year again! This year’s VMAs was sure to be a showstopper— what with it’s killer musical lineup. We have Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, along with so many others. Well, as always, the other key thing that TV After Dark looks forward to most during the VMAs is the red carpet! Or in this case… The “White” carpet. There were tons of different looks being thrown around tonight, a lot of stars brought their A-Game. Here are a few of the looks we thought deserved to be talked about!
NICKI MINAJ
Oh, how I WISH I had a body like Nicki! She looks absolutely stunning in this Bao Tranchi number. The cutouts aren’t too much, it hugs her body perfectly, and the colour looks fabulous on her skin. She’s glam and chic and looks so mature in the best way possible.
JUSTINE SKYE
Now I love a dress that has a life of its own! Usually I’m not a fan of fringe, but the colours paired with the movement makes this Missoni look a showstopper! I also love the heels she paired with it. A+
RITA ORA
Talk about grunge at its finest. The different textures, paired with its dark fabric and even darker eye makeup is a great look on the ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ singer. This ensemble is by none other than Marc Jacobs and I must say that Rita looks like a total badass. AND THE SHOES! Could you even imagine doing anything at all in those?!
ANSEL ELGORT
This Dior Homme outfit got tons of mixed reviews. When mentioning the “Fault in Our Stars’ actor, “Edward Scissorhands” was said a lot in conjunction with this look. Honestly, I’m a fan. I love when men embrace their inner ‘fashionisto’. This was paired well, it looks clean-cut, and Ansel looks like a dreamboat to me! The accessories may be a bit over the top, but everything he’s doing with this look ties in somehow.
HAILEE STEINFELD
How cute does she look?! I love the vibrancy of the colours. It’s also refreshing to see someone in a Balmain piece that doesn’t look necessarily ‘sexy’ but ‘adorable’ instead. I would have paired different shoes, but overall I think she looks fabulous.
HAILEY BALDWIN
Another Balmain piece! A great example of how two people can look completely different wearing the same designer. This jumpsuit is sexy, but nowhere near in an over-the-top way. This look isn’t necessarily WOW, but it does deserve to be mentioned. Baldwin looks incredible— from her minimal accessories to her makeup to how she styled her hair. I have no complaints.
HALSEY
What a transformation! Wearing Yousef Aljasmi, Halsey came bearing it all. The sequins are a bit much, but somehow she pulls it off! I’m loving her hair, which I have to say that Halsey can literally pull off any hairstyle. She changes it up all the time and never fails to disappoint. This look is edgy and daring in that she’s not bothering to wear pasties (and I have to say, I have respect for her for doing that!) Free the nipple!
JADEN SMITH
Jaden Smith is definitely a reason that men’s fashion is starting to peak my interest more. The moment I saw this look, I just had to stare for a few minutes. At first, I was thinking that the look was “meh” but after awhile, I started to actually really like it. A lot of people on the white carpet decided to play with different fabrics and textures—Jaden is no exception. I would have liked it more without the mint green animal print, but lets be honest… This look wouldn’t have been quite as interesting without it.
KIM KARDASHIAN
Honestly, the thing I like most about this look are her accessories, makeup, and hair! Kim always brings sexy to the red carpet, and her dress was no exception, but we just have to talk about her hair. Oh, how many times have I had to go out with wet hair? Have I ever looked this good? No. Have I been compared to a wet dog? Maybe. I need a tutorial on this, and people can talk about the Kardashians all they want, but they know how to look fabulous. I think Kim looks stunning from head to toe, so of course she had to be included in this round-up. A+++
BEYONCE
QUEEN BEY! If she’s ever on a red (or white) carpet, you have to know that she’s gonna be on the best dressed list. Wearing Maison Francesco Coscognamiglio, Beyonce kept with the theme of mixing and matching different textures in her ensemble. A lot of people seemed to think that her feathered neck piece was over-the-top, but I think that Beyonce is the type of person who needs an outfit that causes just as big of a spectacle as she does herself. Mission Accomplished.
AND BLUE IVY
Blue Ivy looked like a princess and her mom? The queen. This is mother-daughter goals in the highest degree. The ruffles in her dress alludes to Cinderella meets Vera Wang and one thing I absolutely love is the fact that she’s all glammed up, but she still looks like a kid.
AND THE LEMONADE SQUAD
AND the fact that she was joined on the white carpet by the ultimate “squad” from her Lemonade visual album Winnie Harlow, Quvenzhané Wallis, Chloe and Halle Bailey, etc along with the mothers of the late Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Oscar Grant, and Trayvon Martin—Lezley McSpadden, Gwen Carr, Wanda Johnson, and Sybrina Fulton— Black Girl Magic at its finest. This white carpet moment was so special and they all looked absolutely amazing standing together and so united.
HONOURABLE MENTION: RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE CAST
Blast from the past! The cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race graced the white carpet to showcase some of the most iconic VMA looks from the past. They definitely slayed, and it’s a great reminder as to why I love this show so much. Serving looks always!
