Suits is back: Harvey and Louis struggle to keep things together, Rachel questions her loyalty to the firm, and Mike discovers the hardships faced after his release.
On the mid-season premiere of Suits entitled “She’s Gone,” the whole group at P.S.L experiences a lot. Each member of the team learns a lot about themselves and what is going to happen to the firm. Taking place in the days following Jessica’s departure, Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Louis (Rick Hoffman) are left on their own as managing partners.
However, what do they do next? Hire new attorneys? Or scheme against Robert Zane’s (Wendell Pierce) firm to win against the merger? Harvey is determined that the firm is going to fail without Mike or Jessica by his side. Louis thinks he can run the firm on his own. And Rachel (Meghan Markle) is torn between staying with P.S.L or taking a job with her father, fearing that she will never pass her character test while working at P.S.L. Elsewhere, Mike (Patrick J. Adams) struggles to find a job that doesn’t involve corporate law and still holds up to his standards. He explains that he wants to help people over and over, but no one will give him a chance.
Later, both Harvey and Louis finally realize that they cannot manage the firm on their own. After lashing out on Louis, Donna (Sarah Rafferty) reaffirms Harvey that he needs to get his act together, and fast. By the end of the episode, Louis offers Rachel a position as a third year associate after she graduates law school. And, we finally learn why Harvey has been on the edge since Jessica left. So much went down this week, so let’s check out our Top 5 Moments of the episode…
Our Darvey dreams have been answered…kind of.
After explaining what happened in the first half of the season, Episode 11 began quickly with a Donna and Harvey dream sequence. *Swooooon.* I know, right? Well, our Darvey dreams didn’t exactly come true as planned. It turns out that Harvey was just having a “nightmare,” where Donna was comforting him after Jessica left the firm.
Donna and Harvey kiss, until Donna tells him to get his sh*t together. We know Jessica and Harvey worked extremely well together at P.S.L, and this scene confirms how much her departure is taking a toll on Harvey’s confidence.
“No Harvey, that’s not leaving you. Jessica left you and you need to get it through your head that she’s never coming back.” - Donna
Professor Ross, anyone?
Throughout the entirety of the episode, Mike struggles to find a new job after his release. He takes out his old messenger bag and bike, and searches the city for any place that would take him. First, Mike goes to two of his old employers at the mail station and a small law firm, who are willing to actually give him a position. However, Each time he begins filling out a job application, they ask if he has ever been convicted of a felony- thus making him intelligible for any job.
After running out of ideas, Mike meets with his old Pastor at the Church. Here, his Pastor offers him a teaching position. Of course, Mike takes it as he literally has nowhere else to go. He seems content, and Rachel seems happy that Mike finally has a job where he can help people again.
On the first day of his job, everything seems to be running smoothly. However, when Mike asks his students to get their jokes out of the way on the new professor, they instead place a photo of Mike’s mugshot on his desk. Mike, furious as to what happens, demands to know who did this, and why. He later goes off on the students by the end of the episode, and earns their respect for a few moments. Nevertheless, in the episode’s closing, Mike decides that teaching is not his true calling. Viewers know that he wants to be a lawyer again, but how?
Louis takes matters into his own hands, the only way he knows how.
Although Harvey seems like he is the character who’s been affected by Jessica’s departure the most, Louis has been having a rough time too. In almost every scene, Louis tries to lead P.S.L. However, he only knows one way to do so. Scheming. With the help of Katrina (Amanda Schull), Louis tries to get a list of Robert Zane’s clients, so that they can join P.S.L. But, Louis fails and realizes that he isn’t meant to be a managing partner and that he’s unfit for the job.
Harvey goes off on Louis..
This might have been the saddest part of the episode. After Louis realizes that he isn’t meant to be head partner, he tries to tell Harvey of his decision. We know that Louis tried to scheme against Robert Zane with Katrina’s help, but failed in getting anywhere. Instead, Louis makes “an enemy” out of him. However, when Harvey and Louis finally talk alone, things getting heated. Harvey, instead of letting Louis speak, decides to yell at Louis and tell him why the firm is failing. He basically places all the blame on Louis in the spur of the moment:
“…You couldn’t even shine Jessica’s shoes and you’re trying to live her legacy down.” - Harvey
“Harvey, please just let me say what I was going to say.” - Louis
“I don’t care what you’re going to say to me Louis, because all you care about is proving to me that you should be managing partner. When everyone in the world knows that you shouldn’t. Me, Robert Zane, even Donna. Jessica didn’t want your name up on the wall. So if you think I’m going to let you be managing partner while she’s still breathing, you’re out of your goddamn mind.” - Harvey
Harsh, right? Don’t worry, Donna talks to Harvey after this confrontation and let’s him know that yelling at Louis was rude. We’re definitely looking forward as to what will happen next.
Rachel chooses P.S.L.
After going back and forth between joining her father’s firm or staying with Pearson Specter Litt, Rachel finally makes a decision. Scared that she will be looked at as unethical due to her upcoming character test, (the test one take’s before they become a legal attorney), Rachel is unsure of what to do. She talks with her father and Gretchen, who catches her in the mail room printing out a new resume, on which company she should go to.
Ultimately, Rachel chooses P.S.L after Louis comes and talks to her. Louis at first offers Rachel a position after her graduation as a second-year associate. Rachel has been working with P.S.L for over 5 years as this point as a paralegal, so this offer is incredible. Then, after Rachel and Louis hug it out, he ends up offering her a position as a third-year associate. Go Rach.
Conclusion
This week’s episode of Suits is the perfect start to the middle of the season. It was filled with emotion, questions, and drama. In terms of the performance of the actors and actresses this episode, they did a phenomenal job. Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman really stepped it up and we saw so many emotions come through their characters. The vulnerability and doubt both characters have after being left to manage an entire firm on their own was great to witness on-screen.
Similarly, Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle offered viewers new sides to their characters that we’ve never seen. Seeing Mike struggle so hard to find a position was shocking and much needed. And yet, the writers do an amazing job in showing how much pain both Mike and Rachel are in. What will happen to the two of them? Will they stay together, or will Mike’s imprisonment cause their engagement to break off? Also, how will Harvey survive without Mike?
