After a tough time, the Clace feels are in full swing in “Day of Atonement”

Clary and Jace made their way to Idris. After not finding someone who could make them a portal to go and look for Valentine, Jace and Clary found a way of going by themselves. Clary creates a rune which opens up a portal and both her and Jace go through it to find themselves in Lake Lyn, in Idris. While Jace and Clary are off, Alec and Izzy deal with Robert’s visit to the Institute. And they don’t waste any time confronting him to demand answers for his affair. After seeing how nervous Simon was to have dinner with his family, Maia decides to keep him some company by tagging along. And during the dinner she proves to be a great friend after she carefully takes out the attention from Simon and lightens the mood.

Valentine, still stunned by the fact that his son is alive, hears Jonathan’s tale and learns how he spent his years in hell. Jonathan plans on sending his father to the same place he was sent by him: Edom, a dimension in hell. Valentine at the end, manages to convince his son that he truly cares for him and that he is sorry for all the pain he made him suffer.

After sensing his Parabatai was in danger, Alec discovers Jace and Clary are in Idris. Izzy goes after them to see what’s wrong and bring them back to New York. But when she reaches Idris and looks for them, he learns that they are not together and that Jace is looking for Clary. She tells Jace that Clary might be suffering for hallucinations caused by swallowing water from the lake, and both of them hurry their search. When they find her, Jace uses his rune power to help stop the hallucinations and bring her back and the three of them continue their search for Valentine. They later discovered they are late as they find the place where Valentine was probably hiding empty.

1. You can tell that Maia helped Simon feel at ease at his family dinner. Do you think Simon and Maia’s friendship is going to turn into something more now that he is no longer dating Clary? Should they give it a try?

Karla (@ShadowhuntersLA): We can’t deny the chemistry between Maia and Simon. From the beginning we saw a connection between the two of them to levels that only they can understand (perhaps because they both are Downworlders). They make each other laugh and they support each other, aspects that are indispensable for a romantic relationship. I would like to see how their relationship evolves, although of course once Simon is ready to move forward and willing to open his heart again.

Nephilimupdates (@nephilimupdates): I think it would be better if they could stay as friends, at least for now. Maia knows how important Clary was/is for Simon and I don’t think she wants to be the rebound. I don’t think Simon is ready either to jump into a meaningful relationship either. That being said, Simon and Maia have amazing chemistry…

Stacey (@staceyoneale): I hope not. Simon just broke up with Clary (and has loved her all his life). It would be unfair to Maia if he started something with her at this point. Plus, Simon needs her friendship. Now that he’s keeping his distance from Clary (and the other Shadowhunters by default) he’s running short on friends.

Ana (@baneandlewis): I think they’ll give it a try. I like their friendship. They have chemistry for sure and seem to have many common interests. I’m not particularly happy of them getting together so soon after Simon and Clary’s breakup because I think Simon needs time to heal. Both of them can use spending some care free time together and enjoying their lives outside of the supernatural world.

2. We got a glimpse into Maia’s backstory in this episode. We know Maia is a closed off person. Why do you think she felt like she could open up to Simon’s family?

Karla: The very fact of feeling among family leds her to open up. Maia trusts Simon completely and she sees all the love around him and that made her remember her own family and what she left behind by decisions made in the past. Maia is willing to give herself completely to Simon, to entrust him with her past, present and future and she took this opportunity to make herself known a little more and in doing so she motivates Simon in knowing her better.

Nephilimupdates: I think first and foremost she was there to help Simon out and felt like she had to do something. But being surrounded by Simon’s family and seeing why he wouldn’t want to give them up probably awoke those feelings she probably was trying to forget.

Stacey: I don’t think she put much thought into it. Simon’s family was kind to her and reminded her that she misses her own. Her reveal fit at the moment.

Ana: I feel like we haven’t seen much of Maia yet. I think that with Simon’s family she felt comfortable enough to share things about her that she hasn’t share with many people. It’s clear that Simon gives her some confidence to be more open and smile a little more. That’s why I think their friendship is so beautiful, they both help each other out.

3. Clary’s rune ability keeps on growing. How is the Clave going to take the news that she can also create portals?

Karla: As it often happens with the Clave and new things: nothing good. We’ve already seen that the Clave wants to study Clary for her abilities but their intentions are not clear on whether they only wish to do it because of science or to categorize her as a threat. Right now the Clave has a lot to deal with so the news that Clary can do what a Warlock does can lead them to misconceive her abilities given her parentage.

Nephilimupdates: I have a feeling that they won’t take the news too well. Maybe will try to study her (and Jace) further?

Stacey: Not very well. Clary is turning into a very powerful Shadowhunter. But she hasn’t spent her whole life as a Shadowhunter, and her father is a traitor. I’d guess many would fear her or at least worry she may betray them at some point.

Ana: They already seem not to happy with it before, so I think they won’t like knowing she can make portals too. Maybe they’ll see her as a threat and will want to do more experiments on her to know why she has this gift. The Clave treats the unknown as something dangerous and scary, I believe this won’t be any different.

4. After hearing everything Jonathan went through when Valentine sent him to hell, do you think he could really forgive his father that easy? Are they going to work together now?

Karla: Of course not! Sebastian is an evil mastermind and surely he convinced Valentine that he forgave him but let’s not doubt that he has a revenge planned for him. For now he will use his father in other to complete the plans he has, and once Sebastian gets everything he needs from Valentine it will be time to make him pay for everything he did. When these two villains begin to work together and start imposing one over the other things will get pretty ugly.

Nephilimupdates: I personally don’t think Jonathan has fully forgiven Valentine but the desire to make his father proud made Jonathan ultimately believe Valentine’s words.

Stacey: Nope! LOL! Jonathan is more Demon than Shadowhunter. He will likely work with Valentine until it no longer benefits him. I wouldn’t expect that will be long considering how Valentine feels about Demons.

Ana: Even if Valentine was telling the truth because, as we saw, he was holding the soul sword, I don’t think Sebastian truly forgave him. How could he? Maybe his plan is tricking Valentine into believing he forgave him so he could get his revenge later on, when Valentine is not expecting it.

5. Why do you think Ithuriel wanted to tell Clary that Jonathan is alive?

Karla: Ithuriel knows dark times are coming and he may have an idea of what Jonathan is and what he has become. As a sign of gratitude he decided to warn Clary about her brother and the dangers he brings. Beyond that we only know that the angels work mysteriously. To be honest I was really surprised that he showed up and gave her that kind of information, I didn’t expect that but when he did show up, I was expecting more so, I’m just as confused as Clary.

Nephilimupdates: Surely he knows how dangerous Jonathan can be and everyone among the gang seemed to have assumed that since Jace wasn’t really Clary’s brother, that the real Jonathan had died. He was just putting that out there once again for them to figure it out.

Stacey: To warn her. They know what Jonathan is and what he’s done. And since Clary has his angel blood (at least, she does in the books), maybe Ithuriel feels a kinship with her.

Ana: I think to give a clue so she could figure out her brother is alive, like she did at the end. He knows he is up to something and maybe he thinks Clary and her friends can prevent it from happening. But since they had no idea about Sebastian’s true identity, he needed them to start putting things together.

6. After Robert told Alec that the Clave lied, do you think the Clave is keeping more secrets away from the Shadowhunters?

Karla: Again, it’s the Clave, of course they have more secrets. For years it’s power has been based on the monopolization and control of information and the power it has. There is too much history between the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders that is not clear and has not been solved. Besides let’s not forget about the Mortal Instruments and their powers, who knows how much more the Clave is hiding in order to maintain their supremacy and power over the whole Shadow world.

Nephilimupdates: If there are other secrets to keep, I’m sure the Clave is keeping them.

Stacey: Hell yeah! The Clave is full of secrets. I don’t doubt that for a minute. It will be interesting to see if Imogen shares any of them with her grandson.

Ana: Definitely. It’s just like any form of government, they keep secrets because they think the people don’t need to know. But learning that they lied about the sword just proves how far they’ll go to lie and pretend that they have everything under control.

7. Clary and Jace keep showing that their chemistry is still there. Should Clary give herself the chance to explore her feelings for him?

Karla: Without a doubt. The relationship between Jace and Clary had a fleeting beginning but it never had the opportunity to properly conclude. The whole issue of “we are brothers” was too confusing and only imposed a moral barrier that forced them to feel nothing for each other. Once the situation was cleared, they both are now free to re-explore that incredible and intense connection they have and that was always there. It’s time for Clary to be honest with herself and organize her feelings so she will not continue to hurt herself and others by denying what she actually feels. I need my good dose of Clace now.

Nephilimupdates: As before with Simon, even if the relationship was somewhat one sided, Clary is still in denial even with what we saw during last episode. It was a step on the direction towards bringing them together but I think she still needs some time.

Stacey: YES! Was that loud? I meant it to be loud. 🙂

I’m a bit aggravated with the show if I’m being honest. Clary is quite the opposite in the books. First, she’s not as naive as she is on the show. Clary never believed Valentine when he said Jace was her long-lost brother. And she never stopped loving him. She’s a bit cruel to him in the show. When they have scenes together, I usually roll my eyes at least once. The show needs to get them together before viewers dislike her.

Ana: I think they both need this chance to explore their feelings.. In season one they barely got to spend time together before knowing they were siblings. But I don’t think they should just jump on it right now. Specially since it will hurt Simon too. Clary needs some time alone to figure things out and realize just how much she wants to spend time with Jace and why trusting her feelings would be a good thing. And Jace, oh my god, he deserves some happiness doesn’t he? He has been through enough events for a season. We just want to see him happy for once!

Final Verdict: Shadowhunters don’t know what is coming for them.

Jonathan’s true colors were on full display in the latest episode of Shadowhunters. His scene with Valentine where he got to tell him how angry he was was brilliant. Now that we know Jonathan is alive, and what lead him to where he is right now, things are about to get intense. We sense he has a plan on his head, and we feel things will get messy for the gang. Clary knows her brother is alive, but she doesn’t know what her brother is capable of. How is she going to react when she knows Jonathan’s story? We’re curious to find out.After watching the preview for next episode, we know a reunion is coming soon. But as things are shaping up to be quite different from the books, we don’t know what’s gonna happen!
