‘Wynonna Earp’ dives into the baby daddy mystery this episode and quashes the tropes consistently seen on television with one big feminist badass squelch.
Perhaps one of the most epic, incredibly moving scenes was near the end. Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) asks Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) how they will raise this child, and Wynonna simply replies: “ours“. Cue to spine-tingling backing music as the Earp sisters embrace in the icy lands of Purgatory.
If there’s anything to describe this episode, it’s “ricochet”.
We’re constantly smashing from comedy to drama to tears to laugh-out-lout slapstick to subtle foreshadowing. It’s incredible when you think about how well Emily Andras has slotted in this season’s plot arcs. Even more so when you consider Melanie Scrofano’s real-life pregnancy as somewhat of a curveball itself for the writers’ room. But it’s been sensitively, tactfully and tastefully handled. It is the epitome of showing us just how badass Wynonna can remain, whilst having cankles.

We hope you enjoyed this episode we much as we did–there’s still time to catch our review as well. But without further ado, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of “Everybody Knows” by introducing our lovely Earpers this week:

1. I love that they are constantly furthering Doc and Dolls’ friendship. The pardon was so sweet, and then Dolls congratulating Doc on his “possible” fatherhood. What did you think of this duo?
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
I thought they were great. I loved how they called each other brothers. And I love how Dolls is so supportive and not angry at the fact that Wynonna’s baby might be Doc’s. I was worried that this might affect their friendship negatively but nope their friendship is stronger than ever. It’s just so nice to be able to see a male/female/male love triangle where the men in the love triangle don’t act like they have ownership over the woman and they’re actually respectful to the woman and they’re friends with each other.
Jill:
Every relationship on this show is so nuanced and wonderful and this one is no different. This friendship was forged in Two-Faced Jack when they both realized that the most important thing in the world to each of them was Wynonna. And, ultimately, that is still the basis of their friendship, I think, but they’ve also learned that the other one is an upstanding capable badass person not only worthy and deserving of respect, but someone the other would gladly go into battle with, and I have really enjoyed watching that growth between them.
2. A defining line of the season will perhaps be: “A word of advice–it’s always a lady’s choice”. Emily Andras has worked magic into this pregnancy storyline: it isn’t about who’s the daddy or the fact that Wynonna’s pregnant at all…what are your thoughts on how deep we really got to the questions raised and tackled with this brilliantly done plot-arc?
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
Jill:
That line really hit me, too, the moment she said it. It’s somewhat ironic since Wynonna has had so few choices in her life, but on the other hand, she does firmly believe it and while the universe itself hasn’t dealt her the best of hands, that doesn’t mean she has to take sh*t from the dealer. As for the pregnancy story line – wow, you would have thought it was the plan from the start, how perfectly it’s playing out as part of the mythology of the show, the development of not just Wynonna’s character, but her relationship with every single person in her life, especially her sister, the most important relationship of the show. It’s been just brilliant and I can’t wait to see where it goes next!

3. Waverly’s always had a gorgeous relationship with Doc. Tim and Dominique are sparks on your television. We know Waverly adores Dolls, too. But she’s always sort of championed Doc–would you agree on that point? Or do you have your own take on it? Why do you think Waverly’s so stubbornly on Doc’s side?
Shelby:
I think Waverly is pretty insightful and can see things about people they may not be able to see about themselves. She can see how good Doc is capable of being. I also think she knows that Wynonna loves him and the he loves her regardless of what either of them says.
Marissa:
Kate:
I don’t know if I necessarily agree she’s on Doc’s side. I don’t think she’s taking a side at all. She loves them both. But she’s just talking to Doc more about it because Wynonna is her sister and Doc may be the father. I don’t think there’s any favoritism happening though.
Jill:
I do think Waverly has always kind of championed Doc. I think maybe she does it because he’s needed a champion. I go back to when she first met him and she said she had a good feeling about him and that she’s a great judge of character. His response, at the time, was that, no, she really didn’t. But…yeah, it seems she does. He’s the big brother she always needed, and in many ways, she’s the little sister he seems to love having, too. I adore this relationship so much!

4. The character mix-ups in this episode were awesome. Let’s kick things off with Nicole and Wynonna. What are your thoughts on their fledgling relationship? Also, can we comment on how hilariously useless a drunk and all-too-honest Nicole is? I’m all up for #TeamPussyWillow.
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
I absolutely loved the moments with Nicole and Wynonna I think it added a whole new depth to their dynamic. Last season when they hung out and drank together in Nicole’s office was one of my fave episodes of the season so I was happy to see it happen again. (Even though Wynonna couldn’t drink this time haha) Also, I very much enjoyed that Wynonna has reached the point of calling Nicole her friend. Also, drunk affectionate honest Nicole was honestly one of the best things ever. Basically every time she talked I cracked up. And the best part was when they saw Waverly and Nicole said: “You’re so pretty and I like you so much!”
Jill:
Drunk Nicole still trying to cop is my second favorite Nicole (after can’t stop smiling when looking at Waverly Nicole). Kat Barrell hit it out of the bleepin’ PARK with drunk Nicole, so funny! And SO CUTE (and so right on character) that she couldn’t lie to Waverly. And I am just love, love, loving all the Wynaught goodness we’re being blessed with. Wynonna needs Nicole’s friendship, and Nicole is worthy of it; I’m so glad Wynonna is accepting it.

5. The boys! Jeremy binding the trio of him, Doc and Dolls was excellent (and so well acted out–it really felt like the three were connected by some invisible rope). Any comments on the boys’ side of the episode? Varun, Shamier and Tim were on fire!
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
I never realized that Doc, Dolls, and Jeremy being blinded together was something I needed. It was so funny. I think Varun Tim and Shamier did such a great job acting like they were bonded together they moved so in sync. And I loved the commentary they made while doing it. It was a really great way to really explore the dynamics of these three characters.
Jill:
Oh, Jeremy! He continues to be this adorable dork and both Dolls and Doc seem to have adopted him as their own, LOL. It was fun to see the boys all together and allow that friendship dynamic to evolve on its own; though Wynonna’s presence was still very strong in many of the scenes, even though she wasn’t physically present, which I also thought was very interesting.

6. Consequences catch up, and I think Doc really got shown that. Do you think it’ll change his attitude of how he’ll help be a father? Will he still take some responsibility and help Wynonna? Despite what we’ve learned this episode?
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
Jill:
I think Doc is a changed man from what he was back in the day, as Dolls told the other Marshals he was. I kind of think he learned the lesson when he betrayed Wyatt and made the deal with the Stone Witch that bad decisions lead to bad consequences. I think meeting the Earp sisters helped change him further. He will support Wynonna because she is Wynonna and she will support the baby because it is Wynonna’s; but I do think he was (and still is) hoping the baby is his.

7. ‘Wynonna Earp’ will surely one day run out of cliffies to leave us on (it won’t, will it?). It seems we’re digging into Waverly’s Earp bloodline now. Early predictions, anyone? Earp or no Earp?
Shelby:
Marissa:
Kate:
I think that Bobo or another revenant is Waverly’s father and Waverly is the other half human half revenant baby that the rumor is about.
Jill:
This is such a painful topic, UGH!! Waverly has so much of her own identity and life-goals wrapped up in being an Earp. Wynonna’s pregnancy has thrown her (all of them, really) for a loop, she’s been gooified, got her hand chopped off, nearly force fed and rat smoothie (which was almost as bad as getting her hand chopped off), and all the while her Earp foundation is possibly crumbling from under her… ANDRAS HOW MUCH DOES OUR LITTLE BALL OF SUNSHINE HAVE TO GO THROUGH!?!?! (except please keep doing it because Waverly is such a fantastic strong character and Dom is totally rocking her this season!).
Right now, I don’t *think* mama Earp is her mom; but Ward could still be her dad. Of course, with the Revenant that Wynonna hooked up with dropping the delicious hint that ‘there were rumors’ of other human-revenant pregnancies, that’s also a tantalizing (and by that I mean terrifying) possibility for Waverly, I suppose. … UGH, THIS SHOW!!!

FINAL VERDICT: Just as we think we’re beginning to solve some problems (and we didn’t know we knew we needed Drunk!Nicole, but we so did) another bombshell is dropped, and you’re a liar if you exclaim you didn’t cry at the end…
The cast wasn’t kidding when they all exclaimed how awesome season two had raised the stakes by! The obvious questions the cast and Emily Andras will be bombarded with will obviously be this pregnancy dilemma. But what ‘Wynonna Earp’ has shown so well is that it integrates the change of plan so well. The sheer intuition and skill needed in order to adapt for Scrofano’s pregnancy, and to make it such a good story arc as well, is incredible. It’s an honestly incredible skill Andras possesses. And to be honest, it plays on ‘Wynonna Earp’ and its biggest strength: its characterization. You get the sense that Emily Andras is kind of the big awesome momma who’s fit as a fiddle and looks after her own cast like it’s her own baby.
This episode had it all: it had slapstick comedy, some Frontier cowboy excitement, an unexpected yet brilliant stamp on the Wynonna pregnancy storyline, and a cliffhanger so heartbreaking even though we all expected it. And Drunk Nicole Haught, too. We’re pretty sure the entire fandom was cackling along with Wynonna when she said:
Wynonna: [chuckles] Officer Haught, so sweet, so naive…
Brendon Yorke’s episode was full of chipper one-liners, cheeky puns and some unique if hilarious ‘bonding exercises’. Yorke’s episode was a masterclass in how to literally bind together a mix of a lovely pit of characters. If it weren’t for Andras’ magical oversight in the sheer depth of her characters, this wouldn’t have worked at all. But it did.
Just like Doc said: we are 100 percent “all in”.
‘Wynonna Earp’ returns Friday, 28th July on SYFY.
WYNONNA EARP is giving us a hard time with superlatives, but one thing it will always be is a feminist, badass smack in the throat.
What ‘Wynonna Earp’ is developing quickly and impressively is the ability to have quick, plot-heavy episodes with fast turnarounds. All the while, it maintains the high-octane emotion and relationships we’ve grown to love. And all of that is down to the careful world-building and characterisation, so carefully crafted from episode one. Look at how this show has grown, and be proud. ‘Asshole’ pretty much covers it, show.
