Secret Love, Walker Weapons, The Road to Terminus and a Bigger and Better Fifth Season for The Walking Dead, Teases Chad L. Coleman
Don’t be distracted by his big burly nature – Chad L. Coleman previously known for portraying Dennis “Cutty” Wise on the HBO series The Wire, became known for his “warm sensitive side” in his role as Tyreese on AMC’s breakout series, The Walking Dead. Coleman warns us despite that Tyreese can do “some serious damage” that’s not where his heart is. Notably, in season four Tyreese went through many emotional changes and found himself on a journey with Carol, which led to one of the seasons ultimate heart-breaking shockers.
We at TV After Dark were lucky enough to chat with Chad about what’s next for Tyreese in The Walking Dead, His patriarchal role as Judith new care taker. Coleman teases on what fans should expect from this season, “The stakes are incredibly high, bigger and better than anything you’ve ever seen before.” We learnt about whether there is a future for him and Carol and whether or not in this season he will finally make it to Terminus. Will Tyreese and Carol’s bond grow closer throughout Season 5?
Chad L. Coleman (CLM): It’s a feeling out process, it’s one of those things where you know forgiveness is a beautiful thing but living it out can be a little clunky. He definitely has a strong love for her, we’ve both been through the fire and horrific situation. It’s kind of tenuous, we have to earn it. So we’re trying to play it out in real time and try to feel it all out. – You know he was was really devastated. I Chad, was hoping that it would start from a different place and I was probably trying to move too fast; because I so identified with the goodness of this woman and all that she tried to do. But the character he’s not moving as fast as I was.
Tyreese had to watch Carol make some difficult choices when it came to the death of Lizzie. How will this impact Tyreese moving forward as the caretaker for baby Judith?
It doesn’t trump that. That’s the one gift of clarity, is community and the future. So Judith represents that, so he’s clear about that. It’s just a matter of how vulnerable are you willing to be with the person that tries to transgress from the way that she did? It’s more in that neighborhood, but he’s clear about community and Judith is definitely the heart of that.
It’s a lonely place in the Apocalypse and men have needs what does this mean for your character Tyreese now that he’s held up with Carol?
I don’t think he’s going to be ready to extend himself in that kind of vulnerable way. If he didn’t have incredibly intense feelings for Karen’s value, then that value of it wouldn’t have resonated the way that it did. I think he’s still in that wounded place of missing her.
Viewers were not shocked but surprised how level-headed Tyreese handled the knowledge of Carol killing his girlfriend. Has he forgiven her and moved on, or is there some underlying deep anger and resentment waiting to resurface?
It’s not cut and dry. I can’t give anything away as far as that’s concerned. It’s not cut and dry but once things play out, you’ll get I’ve got to leave that one alone or I’ll be giving you the whole deal. So you’ll see, but you know it’s kind of one foot in one world and one foot in another.
Will there be some zombie killing siblings between you and your sister this season?
Hmmm, I think you’ll see us both in action.
Every year there’s that one zombie takes center focus. Does Tyreese encounter any particular zombie that scared him?
There’s a lot in store when it comes to the whole zombies walker situation. The stakes are incredibly high, bigger and better than anything you’ve ever seen before.
Tyreese’s goal is to get to the group. Get Grimes’ baby to his parents. While this is happening, Carl’s character is growing up sooo fast. Will Tyreese have a paternal instinct now that will drive this character?
You can safely say that he lands firmly in the ideology that it’s incredibly important for him to share that with others. He’ll be sure about his outlook and his perspective. You know I can’t say what that is, but he will lock into his ideology and where that leads us…da da dum dum…”
There’s a very scary of side to Tyreese but emotionally he seems to be somewhat of a tortured soul. Will you be exploring that in your character more this season?
See, the thing about Tyreese is, what people identify with, what’s most attractive is that warm sensitive side but this is more than a capable, physically strong man that can just do some serious damage. He doesn’t lead with that, he’s a human being that doesn’t lead with that and that’s what so compelling…I don’t need you to know how strong or how dangerous I am but what I need you to know is that I have humanity and that people matter.
Is there a particular episode that really hits it off for Tyreese this season that fans should look out for?
I can honestly say from tip off, on. It’s the most compelling stuff I’ve ever done. So there’s not one particular. They’ve done a major job of putting a lot of incredible jobs on my plate.
