Halsteads Rage, Erin Deals with Mommy Issues, and Family isn’t Always Blood in this weeks review of Chicago P.D.
We jumped into Chicago PD this week right where we left off and hit the ground running. Detective Lindsay was literally running after the guy who just attempted to take out Halstead but had missed and shot the cute bartender Halstead had been seeing instead. The guy got away, but they never get away for long with this group, do they? Meanwhile Oscar Bembenek, fresh off putting his hit out on Halstead, is upset he’s in jail so he’s decided to knock off the loved ones he feels wronged by. So you know, people like lawyers, police officers, judges. While the team is discussing any new or related information from their Criminal Informants, Olinsky recognizes something and starts connecting the dots. This leads him to a former hitman and Halstead puts his life on the line to end Bembenek’s hit list. The team went a little rogue on this one guys, we have lots to discuss!

Halstead’s rage was everywhere this week, as he was clearly blaming himself for his friends getting shot at the bar. He was angry and wanted revenge and most of all he did not want to be babysat. When Burgess and Roman are assigned to not let Halstead out of their sight per Voight’s orders, Halstead is none too pleased. Jesse Lee Soffer was great as usual in this episode, walking the line between feeling sorry for himself and being so angry and rage-y and not making us hate him for it. The team comes up with this cock-a-mamey plan to use the former hitman and have him hand over a very Weekend at Bernie’s looking Halstead to the hitman who is calling out the hits on Oscar’s list. Were you also thinking this had trouble written all over it from the beginning? Halstead is willing to put it all on the line though, being both the bait and the hero of this episode.
“First of all, it’s detective. Second of all, let’s me and you not get off on the wrong foot.” ~ Halstead
Of course when Halstead takes the former hitman down all crazy krav maga style we really want to give him a cape because he is our hero. To backtrack just a second though, everyone knew this would happen correct? You put him in a car with a former hitman and he had what? Like a million dollar bounty on his head? You had to have seen this coming Voight. Additionally, the car that the former hitman and Halstead were in, why didn’t any of the cops sweep it for weapons before putting Halstead in it? That made no sense to me when he pulled the gun from the glovebox and turned on Halstead. From the looks of the previews and Voight calling for an ambulance, I really wasn’t sure what was about to go down. Thankfully it was not needed for Halstead or any of the cops. Later, when we see him visit his bartender friend that was shot, we see a softer side of Halstead when he reveals this is the first time anyone has ever taken a bullet for him. You could really see the anguish and the torment on Soffer’s face when he was sitting there. On the bright side, she will likely be fine and #HalsteadsRage saved the day and kept us on the edge of our seats.
Mama Lindsay Ties the Knot
Erin was has been dealing with the return of her mother and her mothers insistance on being a part of her life. Erin’s mom Bunny, played by the talented Markie Post just wants to use Erin to appear like she has it all together, we suspect. We noticed Bunny changed the subject to salad plates when her new hubby came over just as Erin was recounting another feel good story from her childhood. We are really enjoying finding out more about Erin and her backstory and while we can’t imagine to know what that’s like, we do wonder if Erin will ever cut her mother a little slack and just try to be nice. We hope they can make it through one meal by the end of the season.

Some time with her mother is all Erin needs to drop her grudge against Voight for playing dirty to get his job back. We love scenes with these two. And we are so intrigued by Erin’s backstory! We don’t know very much except that her father was in prison and her mom an addict, and then she became a CI for Voight and later he and his wife took her in. Erin Lindsay is a tough cookie and she doesn’t give it all away up front, so we hope that this season we get to know her a little better. We love that Erin has such compassion for young peope in trouble, shown in her helping get Nadia into a rehab last season and trying to help her get and stay on her feet this season. Clearly she gets her compassion for these types from Voight, though we suspect he would never admit that. He doesn’t fool us though, we know he’s got a heart in there!
In House Means In House
One of the reasons we love Chicago PD is that this unit is like a family. Voight looks out for them all and protects them. This episode he was more protective and concerned than usual since there was a bounty on Halstead’s head and all that. Jason Beghe is such an intense actor and honestly, he scares us a little with some of his interrogations and beat downs, but then there are moments when we just want to hug him too. Voight runs a tight ship and he doesn’t take any lip, but he’s always got his guys backs and we appreciate that in this kind of show. Too often are characters like this written into just being a d*ck, instead of showing that they actually have layers and feelings. We hope to peel away at some of those layers of Voight this season and learn more about him. Don’t you guys love to see him go full on badass and rough up that guy they picked up? And there we go back from wanting to hug him to be a little scared of him! Tell you what though, we would want him in our corner if anything was about to go down. We also wouldn’t mess with a direct order from Voight.

When Voight tells the unit that “in house means in house”, we take that to mean that because they went rogue on this case and did some not so legal things to get their information and their arrests, Voight doesn’t want it to get out to the rest of the department. It also made us think, that instilling that kind of secrecy and trust in the group would strengthen the bond of the unit as a whole. Plus we don’t think Voight wants to tangle with Internal Affairs again anytime soon.
FINAL VERDICT
We’ll be honest - there wasn’t anything about this episode that we didn’t love! We were on the edge of our seat the whole time and even though we knew the plan with Halstead and the hitman was going to be trouble from the start, the excitement of watching the team deal with the fallout was, well exciting! We loved how everyone stood by Halstead and supported him through making the tough decision to go forward with that plan. This episode had so many moments where the team showed their loyalty to the unit and to Halstead, like when Olinksy went to Bembenek in prison and let him know he made a call and Oscar will now be released into general population. Oh and by the way, Bembenek’s mistresses brother is in the same prison and looking for revenge against him. We suspect it won’t be long before justice is handled and Oscar Bembenek becomes a thing of the past.
We are excited to learn more about the back stories of our favorite characters, as little by little this season we are learning more about their lives outside the precinct. And can we talk about the stunts on this show? Considering they have stunt coordinator Tom Lowell who has worked on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films that follow, it’s not suprising that they are anything short of amazing! How many cars do you think they wreck an episode?

- When the hitman on the phone was instructing the former hitman with Halstead to take him out of the car, we were hoping the next line would have been, ‘take his shirt off’l.
- Where does one even purchase these throw away phones that are always used in crime shows?

- We loved when Voight gave that Heaven and Hell speech. Chills!
- New guy Sean Roman. We do not like you. It doesn’t seem like anyone else does either.
