A bad date with an age appropriate guy sends Liza into the younger tattooed arms of hottie Josh.
Liza’s (Sutton Foster) charade continues to develop as she maps out her new twentysomething life in the latest episode of Younger, “Liza Sows Her Oats.” The first step after transformation is Internet presence cancellation. Middle-aged Liza is going totally off the grid, and living with Maggie (Debi Mazar) in Brooklyn! This deletion, of course, leads to her old married friends worrying for her life and then setting her up on a blind date. Yay married friends. On the younger side of love we have Josh (Nico Tortorella), who is still smitten for Liza and happens to live quite close to her new pad.
Caitlin (Tessa Albertson) decides to stay in India because of a boy, much to Liza’s disproval and Kelsey (Hilary Duff) is on the hunt to land one of her favourite foreign artists much to her boyfriend’s disapproval. Liza’s work task is to find a way to sell an older authors new book to young people. When Lauren (Molly Bernard) introduces her to topless Tuesdays Liza’s hashtag –after a few trial and errors- starts trending internationally. A successful at work leads to her blind date with a mid-aged divorcée who can’t stay off her phone long enough to finish dinner. After a cute and boyish (in the best way) text from Josh Liza surprises him for a late night make out, and leaves the hottie wanting more. Hot and bothered yet? Good, lets discuss this weeks top moments before obsessing over that kiss.
Topless Tuesday anyone!
Lauren has quickly become a scene stealing character. If anything can top (pun intended) her bush freak out during the pilot, it would definitely be her nude beach moment at lunch. Her carefree attitude, and impressively swift shirt removal left me not only impressed but also dying to join in. Here’s to hoping that Laurens comments and spontaneity will keep Liza inspired for season to come.
“Uh what you doing there?” – Liza
“Cover yourself woman, we are not at burning man.” – Kelsey
“What it’s practically legal to be topless in New York, plus it’s topless Tuesday on twitter okay I need to tweet.” – Lauren
“Whoa you’re putting that online?” – Liza
“Hell ya! Hashtag topless Tuesdays, hashtag lunch with the girls.” – Lauren
“I don’t think she means us.” - Liza
Hand off the boob.
Kelsey Peters is one tough chick at the workplace, yet less so in the home. This episode was the first time we see her saying no to her man and putting her interests and career first. Props to you girl! Calling out Thad (Dan Amber) for only wanting sex when in bed together was the perfect way to take control of the situation and put the man-child in his place. We haven’t got too many insights into the workings of their relationship but if little peek left full of wonder for what’s in store for this couple. We know that Liza doesn’t like him, if anything can come between Kelsey and her new work BFF Thad would so be the guy.
“What I can only stay here if I have sex with you?” – Kelsey
“No babe it’s just been three whole days.” – Thad
“Okay well why don’t you read something for once, that copy of The Goldfinch has been on your nightstand for a year.” – Kelsey
(Man hand on boob.)
“In four hundred pages, okay, I promise.” – Thad
(Hand riped off said boob and pitty patted.)
Wait a minute; she’s not in India?
Liza’s daughter Caitlin has had less screen time then the rest of the cast and when she is on camera the majority of her time is spent being wishy washy over what country she should live in. This episode showed a bit of rebellion from the prodigal daughter in the form of her going against her mothers wishes and heading to Gowa with a gorgeous, pre-med genius. The fact that Liza found out via topless twitter pic was the perfect way to show this mom that even though her daughter seems responsible she is still young and looking for fun. Liza should take a page out of Caitlin’s book, I didn’t see her going topless in the name of great literature.
Old guys can be douches too.
This episode was a turning point for Liza. All her time has been spent acting younger than finally she puts on the mom dress, cuts out the eyeliner and is ready for her date with an age appropriate man. No surprises there when the guy turns out to be a total jerk. He must have been in his late forties and yet can’t make it through on dinner without checking his email. My douche bag alarm was blasting the moment he opened his mouth and chipotle came out. Thumbs down to Liza’s couple friends for setting her up on a terrible blind date, just because a man is divorced doesn’t mean he’s a perfect fit for your divorced friend.
“Nobody thought that healthy food and Mexican food could go together, but I was a believer from the beginning. And let me tell you Chipotle has been very good to me.” – Richard

Liza finally started thinking with her Vagina
Josh is a total catch and basically the best and most decent guy on the show (though we haven’t med Caitlin’s foreign friend yet). Liza feel for his charm the moment he bought her a drink and yet was never ready to take their filtration relationship to the next level. Cue back date with old guy, sweet and chill text from Josh and boom Liza is all over the twenty year old. This has been coming for a long time and I makes me incredibly happy to see Liza accept that this guy could be her happy ending, or at least a good story to tell friends. Josh is, of course, completely hooked on Liza, the fact that she has been blowing him off then shows up out of the blue sucks off his face, and then leaves only turns his lust crack further and further. I’m rooting these two.

“Sorry, I just really needed to do that, okay, I’ll see you around the burg.” – Liza
“Wait, that’s it?” – Josh
“For now.” – Liza
Final Verdict: “Liza Sows Her Oates” sets the tone for this new series, one that’s fun, flirty, and most importantly doesn’t hit its audience over the head with the social media references.
Any narrative crafted around middle age characters trying to figure out today’s standard technology can fall into the trap of over using social media and youth culture. The result then becomes a show that kills off its own audience by hammering them to death with their own references. This episode proved that Younger has found its light-hearted tone, and, more importantly, found a way to place a bird out of water in front of a computer and make it naïvety intelligent and comical. The writing was quirky and delivered in a swift, agile manner. The result was charismatic character relationships and a naturalistic sense of dialogue that could be overhead at any Starbucks in New York.
Episode two showed that each character in Younger has a very distinctive voice and intention. Laurens total disregard for social etiquette in favour of twitter followers was so blatantly real and honest in terms of todays youth motivations. Moving Liza to Brooklyn created more dynamic setting possibilities. The apartment she now shares with Maggie has enough randomness and hipster charm to give any city lover loft envy. The aesthetic contrast between the swanky restaurant Richard took Liza too and the street dwelling food truck Josh grabs the meatballs from beautifully illustrated the diversity between Liza’s old and new life. Ending the episode on a cliff hung Josh was the perfect finishing point to leave audiences hooked.
