Klaus Was Born To Be A Protective Daddy, But He Won’t Be The Only Mikaelson Looking Out For Family
On this week’s The Originals, Klaus is still hot on Haley’s trail to keep her from spilling the secret of baby Hope’s existence to Jackson or any other wolves for that matter. But once Hayley decides that Jackson can be trusted to keep the secret, will her decision mean curtains for Jackson at the hands of volatile Klaus? Davina and Kol’s witchy doings are interrupted when Davina gets a 911 text from Aiden that Marcel and Josh are still missing. But when Kol helps to distract Finn while the other two come in from the back, what consequences will his flip-flopping ways have on him. Rebekah is continuing to hold her ground in the witch-house but will making waves lead to more injury to herself, or simply pave the way for a new ally? Let’s discuss.
It’s About To Be A Witch Fight
So just as Davina and Kol appear to be preparing to take Kol out or whatever juvenile vendetta it is they’re supposed to be on, Davina gets a text from Aiden: Marcel and Josh are still missing. In case you didn’t remember, they and all the other vampires were snatched up into captivity by Finn at the end of the last episode. Davina insists on making their rescue a priority so Kol must go along with her wishes and help them out, by distracting Finn while Davina and Aiden can sneak in from the back. Of course Finn is busy trying to get some answers out of Finn, regarding whatever secret(s) Klaus is keeping. But of course Finn won’t be fooled so easily, as he quickly catches on to what’s really happening and thus has the other vampires wake up all mad and bloodthirsty. A quick snap of the neck renders Josh temporary-dead (just an immortal thing, you know) and Aiden and Davina take off run running with their boy in tow. But finally, Finn decides to punish the duplicitous Kol (who had once again tried to flip-flop sides) by… making him mortal?
“I curse you to this body, unable to jump to another. Over the next few days, I want you to contemplate what’s to come, a meaningless lonely death, and the darkness that will follow. Clock starts now. Be sure to say your goodbyes. Go, brother. I will not miss you.” ~ Finn
For starters, we were a bit confused by that last curse performed by Finn and what exactly it is that he was inflicting on Kol. We’re leaning towards the idea that he has made Kol mortal, but was he not already? Aren’t witch bodies mortal? We’re a bit fuzzy on the supernatural rules of this universe so hopefully the writers will clear things up somewhat in the next one. Putting that hiccup aside, we were once again impressed by Finn since he managed to deduce Klaus’ secret: that baby Hope is still alive. It felt truly plausible not only to the strong writing of his dialogue and Yusuf Gatewood’s strong acting abilities and the way in which he delivers his lines. But even with the heaviness of these other plot points, the writers still threw us a bone, that of our darlings Josh and Aiden. Though their time together in this episode was brief, we see that Aiden was entirely understanding about Josh’s magical bloodthirst and instead was only concerned about Josh’s well-being. That little nuzzle into Josh’s neck post-snap was a small detail but remember, that’s where the beauty is. In this, we saw a truly in-character gesture of concern and care, an apology if you will for the violence, but also a showing of affection. With all the magical mayhem going on with Finn, Kol, and Davina, we’ll be quite curious to see how and what they do once even more witches start coming back into the fold…
Clash Of The Hybrid-Parents
When last we saw Klaus and Hayley, they were both stressing over the secret of baby Hope, albeit in very different ways. Hayley was wanting to go through with the werewolf marriage with Jackson that would install all their shared strengths in the other wolves who will attend the ceremony. But a problem arose when Hayley learned that part of the marriage ritual was divulging all of one’s secrets to the other. This would, of course, expose more than the core group to the secret of baby Hope. When Klaus learned of Hayley’s plans to be wed to Jackson and the extent of the ritual, he stormed off to bust up the wedding (and possibly some faces, too). But when Klaus and Hayley finally met up with each other, the most epic argument we’ve seen between these two ensued. By now, Hayley has decided that Jackson can be trusted and Klaus is not about to be persuaded. So what does Klaus do? Why, snap Hayley’s neck and go beat the living snot out of Jackson of course.
“She can come home. The wolves will be on our side.” ~ Hayley
“The wolves cannot be trusted.” ~ Klaus
“In your paranoid mind, nobody can be trusted. When does it end?” ~ Hayley
“There is no end!” ~ Klaus
This explosive argument between Klaus and Hayley was very well-written, as both parties were making some entirely valid points and from where we stand, it’s not entirely clear which of them is the “right” one. It makes for a more interesting flow of plot, as we can’t help but ponder how both outcomes could play out if they were allowed to. Admittedly, Phoebe Tonkin’s acting didn’t quite match the level of Joseph Morgan’s but we’d still say she’s shown enormous growth since she was first introduced as Hayley. Speaking of Joseph Morgan, there was one character moment that stood out to us, which was at the beginning when he made a thinly veiled threat to wreak havoc and bloodshed if the wolves didn’t give up the location of Hayley and Jackson immediately. We couldn’t help but doubt whether he really would’ve killed that child, now that he is a parent. We got the sense that Klaus just might have been using his reputation and past-doings to convince the wolves of his threat. Given all the character development we’ve been seeing from Klaus following the birth of his daughter, this would fit in nicely with all of that. As for beating up Jackson, that fit right in with the Klaus we’ve come to know and love even with his often morally questionable doings. It was a nice little twist at the end where we saw that he was telling Elijah how he planned to kill Jackson after the marriage ritual was completed. We really have no problem with this whatsoever, as Jackson seems a bit too generic to be worth keeping around for much longer. There’s enough eye candy on the show with far more compelling character arcs that are more worthy of being tended to and developed. Speaking of Elijah, are the writers planning on using him again any time soon?
Hey Soul Sister
Rebekah forges a connection with a newly arrived witch. We had seen earlier that Rebekah had stolen an apple and offered it up to Cassie, with whom she had shared her plan to channel the witch upstairs in the box in order to get more of a power boost to break free from the witch-house. Unfortunately for Rebekah, the wicked awesome punch she throws to keep this new witch from being subjected to any further mistreatment for chowing down on the stolen apple, results in her getting her hand smashed and Cassie’s necklace being stolen. But in a most delightful twist, Rebekah later goes to try to channel the witch-in-the-box and finds her missing. That new witch friend of hers was in fact Freya, free from her box-sleep! Freya is enormously powerful and lays waste to the witches that were about to attack Rebekah and then frees both of them from the house.

This plot by far had the best directing of anything else. Matt Hastings made everything quite eerie and we especially loved the shots of the blood being rushed out of Freya’s victims face, which brought us back to watching the classic Swedish horror film, “Låt den rätte komma in” for the first time. Though we were thrilled at Rebekah being finally freed, we’re almost sad to see this trapped-in-the-witch-house arc end, simply because it felt like the power dynamics were interesting enough that it could have been in its own show. Freya also seems like a fascinating character that we’re thoroughly eager to see more from, as we still don’t know what her driving motives are. Maisie Richardson-Sellers is also continuing to play Rebekah well, but we still need to see how she does opposite the likes of Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies. But that closing scene that had Rebekah and Klaus reunited certainly seemed to have the chemistry we’re looking for so we think these two will play well together.
FINAL VERDICT
Overall, this episode held strong as the man plots carried on shifting around. Rebekah’s back out, Freya’s alive and ready to stir things up, Elijah’s still stalled, and now Kol is… dying? We’re not necessarily against so many characters being part of the narrative, but we’d like for the writers to focus on those played by actors who make the material they’re given brilliant, and either kill off or minimise the rest. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, Marcel, and Hayley on the good side, and Freya (?), Finn, Esther and Mikael on the bad. Everyone else is just cluster, with the exception of Josh and Aiden who are entirely adorable and heart-warming and should absolutely still be on the show and carry on as they are. Writers Declan de Barra and Michael Narducci did their strongest work with the Witch House, as all those power dynamics were fascinating to watch. On with the supernatural drama!
