In Stitchers 3X03 “Perfect,” we reaffirm our love for the coolest geek squad we know
With Maggie’s announcement of Cameron as interim leader barely past her lips, she’s already off on her first trip as director of the stitchers program. His first day goes about as smoothly as expected, especially with a bitter and hung over Camille giving lip. They do make it through the meeting to stitch into Mark Broden, a high powered divorce lawyer. He was found in bed with a gunshot wound in his chest. Kirsten stitches in and is able to identify three good suspects, but not before the shotty neurosync reappears. Once again, the oxytocin levels are high, leading Linus to go in search for answers. Camille eventually admits to Cameron that she’s struggling with the rejection, and he assigns her Kirsten’s next stitch due to his shaky hands.

Through a series of deductions reminiscent of a classic whodunit mystery, our team eliminates Broden’s soon-to-be ex-wife and jilted former lover. Both the model and the plastic surgeon revealed the lawyer’s obsession with perfection. Both admitted to participating in murder attempts - the former by shooting and the latter by poisoning. However, based on what Kirsten saw in the stitch, neither actually killed him. Eventually, their search leads them to the love doll factory that produced “Miss Perfect,” as they termed her. She was with him when he died. It turned out she was made of latex, something he was deathly allergic to. She was created to kill, and the culprit was, ironically, a man who had no romantic interest in Broden at all.
Now, with a whole new team dynamic and some interesting romantic twists, this was quite the episode! Let’s sit down and take another look at what went down, shall we?
Cameron may not have wanted to be in charge, but he stepped up to the challenge
While Maggie is in Washington, D.C. in her new role as director of the Stitchers program, she leaves Cameron (Kyle Harris) in charge during her absence. Leading the stitch may be something he is very comfortable with, but leading the entire team? Camille is hung over and more unfiltered than usual, making things even more awkward for everyone in the room. When Cameron confronts her about it later, she initially blows him off before later apologizing for her behavior. The stress is evident when he barks at Kirsten for her usual teasing banter, and then struggles to get through the stitch without shaking badly. Luckily, with some help from his friends, he gets the hang of things enough to get the case solved as a group.
Cameron: “Look, I didn’t ask Maggie for this, alright? I know you wanted the job, but you didn’t get it. So let it go. And then maybe you and I can work together to figure out whoever killed this guy.”
We’ve always loved Cameron for his seemingly inexhaustible patience with Kirsten. This week, we saw a new side of him when he must stand his ground against an angry Camille and doubting coworkers. This is not his comfort zone, and we see him step a little too far into harshness at first. This makes the situation challenging for all those involved, and they have to learn a new dynamic to work with. Fortunately for us, this group knows how to put egos aside for the greater good, and they are able to get things done. We also see Cameron realize that the more confident he is, the better the team follows his lead. While we have no doubt there will be more hurdles to overcome, we trust Cameron will stay true to what’s important.
We love the drama, but seeing the team do what they do best was a sight to behold
We’ve seen the stitch lab spending the majority of the past few months dealing with internal politics and family drama, they caught a break this week. Despite Cameron’s shaky beginning as interim director, our squad of scientists quickly immerse themselves in their newest case. Even Camille, who is licking her wounds over Maggie’s rebuff and loss of her dream promotion, does her part. What starts out as a simple shooting turns into a complex puzzle of bitter confessions. Gradually eliminating the most likely suspects, they are in for one last surprise before solving the crime. While he pursued the perfect partner, Mark Broden ignored the fact that it’s not humanly possible. In the end, it was love that drove the murder, but not the kind he sought from his long-suffering exes.
Cameron: “Okay, so now the suspects are the ex, Miss Perfect, the mummy, and Doc Hollywood?”
Don’t get us wrong. We love the conspiracy aspects and character development we’ve seen these past two seasons. We really appreciate the fact that the writers choose not to ply us only with fluffy entertainment. They challenge us to think outside the box and question the world around us, and we love them for it. However, it’s been a little while since our favorite crime-solvers got a chance to go back to basics. Luckily, in this week’s episode we had sisterly bonding, geeky references, a musical performance, and a most unlikely murderer. We loved seeing the gang banded together and working like a well-oiled machine. We laughed, we cried (on the inside), and we cheered for our heroes at the end of it all. Kudos to Matthew Scott Kane and the other writers for bringing a smart mystery to the table, and we hope there’s lots from where that came from!
While Camsten has been temporarily sidelined, other romances are taking off
During the stitch into Broden, the neurosync weakens again during an intimate moment. While Kirsten is successful in gaining the information needed, the elevated oxytocin level is worrisome. Linus later reveals that when he looked into the situation, it was Kirsten’s levels that caused the trouble. His solution? No “love” for the brand new couple. While Camsten resolve to prioritize work, it does drive a temporary wedge between them that takes time to resolve. Meanwhile, Linus and Ivy seem to be hitting it off, while Amanda and Camille bond over their shared love of music.
Fisher: “We got plenty of stuff we’re working through. I mean, we didn’t get back together thinking either of us is perfect. We got back together to find the answer to the only question that really matters. After you get older, and the excitement fades, will we still be happy spending the rest of our lives together.”
Camsten shippers let out a loud collective groan when we discovered what was causing the spotty neurosync. We should have known it wouldn’t be this easy for those two. As usual, Emma Ishta and Kyle Harris were magical together on screen. When Camsten fought, we saw the pain in their eyes and wanted to tell them it’s going to be okay. Seeing Linus and Camille happy only adds salt to their wound, although we love Sarah Davenport and Anna Akana. Yes, we know this maintains the tension from the other seasons, but we’re going to pout because it still hurts. We can only hope that this will motivate the team to come up with a more effective solution than the oxytocin filter, because Camsten is life!
Final Verdict: In Stitchers 3X03 “Perfect,” we find happiness in the imperfection of life
Life is hard. Just when you get your dream job and your dream girl, something happens to remind you of that. Cameron learned this the hard way when he was tasked with leading his friends while Maggie’s away. His new leadership role pits him against those who are his friends and lovers, and he has to resist the urge to give in to being his usual self. Things only get more complicated when his girlfriend’s ability to perform her job depends on the two of them being apart. Still, our favorite neuroscientist is nothing if not flexible, and he patiently works his way through the rough patches to bring the team together. It was a great reminder of how perfect this team is together, even if they are only so with each other.

It would be quite the mystery if we didn’t have questions after watching this week’s episode. Will Camsten really be forced to remain nearly platonic for the rest of this season? Couldn’t Linus come up with a more permanent solution than the oxytocin filter? Will Cameron’s shaky hands result in Camille taking over for the stitches more regularly? What if Cameron finally hits his breaking point?
As we mentioned before, the only issue we really took with this episode was the fact that neither Cameron nor Kirsten considered asking Linus to work on finding a solution to their problem. After all, if he can filter out some of the oxytocin, couldn’t he find a way to separate or suppress it during the stitch? At the very least, Cameron IS a neuroscientist. We can’t imagine he wouldn’t be able to come up with something if he put his mind to it.
There might have been one tiny hiccup in this episode, but we have to say that we truly enjoyed all the intricate pieces that went into it. We loved the unexpected twists and turns, the ingenious (and hilarious) discovery of who killed him, and all the prop humor that went into 3X03. Our hearts fluttered at Anna Akana and Allison Scagliotti serenading each other in character. Even though it killed us to see them upset, we were taken with the emotional performances of Emma Ishta and Kyle Harris during the Camsten fight.
While we’re sad for Camsten right now, we are excited to see where Livy and Camanda will go. We want more of Cameron coming into his own as a leader and Camille finding her own path to success. There was a tiny bit disappointed (okay, a lot) that we didn’t get to see Fisher strip down to his skivvies after being shot in the eyes, but we like that he’s taken a paternal role in dispersing advice about relationships to Camsten!
Hopefully there will be a better solution to the oxytocin problem, because we know even the best relationships will fall apart if you don’t nurture it. We worry that if Camsten is forced to act as friends for too long, they might give up on being together. We can only see how things play out over the coming weeks, but our fingers are crossed for happy things to come!
