A foe of Superman will be coming after the Girl of Steel and it’s Reactron!
As we approach the series premiere of CBS’ anticipated superhero series Supergirl, the story of Kara Zor-El (played by Melissa Benoist) who takes it to the skies as National City’s protector, we are getting new exciting information about what to expect in the first series as well as what familiar faces from the DC Comics universe we will be seeing on the show. It was revealed by EW that Sons of Anarchy and The 100 actor Chris Browning has been cast as the DC Comics baddie Ben Krull a.k.a. Reactron who will be appearing in the third episode.
He is described as having an armored suit that will be powered by nuclear energy and after his attempts of trying to take down the Man of Steel, he will be arriving in National City in hopes of trying to kill Supergirl as an act of revenge to Superman. While the initial report doesn’t say specifically that he will have powers, like his comic counter-part, I would assume that he will have some form of nuclear abilities, unless the suit is running on nuclear energy that isn’t coming from him.
EW does go on to say that while he is slated to just be in the third episode, that Browning has the potential to become a guest recurring villain which is what I hope will be the case. In addition, that same episode will also be featuring the recurring DC character Lucy Lane (sister of Lois Lane) who will most likely be announced very soon since they are shooting episode 2 and with Browning now cast, a casting for Lucy shouldn’t be too far away. Show-runner and executive producer Ali Adler announced back at San Diego Comic-Con that we would be seeing Reactron, Livewire as well as Peter Facinelli as the famous DC Comics villain Maxwell Lord in the first season. I’m pretty stoked to see who they get for Livewire, a very fun Superman character that can be used as a great recurring villain throughout the whole series actually, maybe even as a anti-hero of some form.
The one thing that I do hope we get an answer soon to by Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, who are also the creators and show-runners of Arrow and The Flash, is whether or not this show can actually use meta-humans at all, since the CW/DC universe is already using that term for their powered characters. While we know that this show isn’t part of that universe, at least not yet anyway, I still want to know if this show can only use aliens to work as their super-powered heroes and villains, or if a different form of meta-humans can be introduced at a later point, like how the Earth 2 universe will be used in season 2 of The Flash as meta-humans that got abilities through other ways than just the particle accelerator.
Because this show is on CBS, it has been assumed heavily that the series will be procedural, but we have heard from CBS president Nina Tassler that it will be heavily serialized, with some procedural element. However, since this is a series about an alien who is invincible in more than one way, you are going to need to put her up against super-powered antagonists and personally, I would focus on bringing in villains that aren’t just there for one episode. As we are getting closer to the premiere, everything that is coming out about this show is making me more excited for this show to finally kick off.
Supergirl is set to premiere on Monday, October 26 at 8:30 PM on CBS before returning to its regular timeslot at 8 PM the following Monday.
