We’re a bit… Divided on Frank. But we’re all on board for Berry!

As has been the case since the beginning of the season, episode 3 of Outlander was divided into time with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and time with Jamie (Sam Heughan). Let’s start with time with Claire! It’s 1956 and Claire and Frank (Tobias Menzies) are enjoying a peaceful moment of domesticity. That is until Claire invites Frank to the movies and finds out he’s already seen the films. With his other lady. And she thanks him for being discreet! Nice. That lasts until Claire’s graduation, when a mixup with the times (you couldn’t even have her graduation dinner, Frank?) has his mistress turning up. Unsurprisingly they get into a massive argument about it.

Fast forward to Bree’s (Sophie Skelton) 18th birthday. Frank tells Claire he’s been offered a position at Cambridge. Not only that, he wants a divorce and is taking Bree with him. Since Claire’s been so busy with school and work he figures Brianna will want to stay with him. They get into another fight and Frank storms out. Claire gets called to the hospital and before the shift is over Joe Abernathy comes to tell Claire Frank’s been in an accident. And he’s dead. Claire hits the morgue to confess to Frank that she did actually love him, and that he was her first love.

But what’s Jamie been up to since his arrest? He’s been doing time at Ardsmuir prison. Good news for Jamie is he’s kind of a prison boss, the men calling him Mac Dubh and the prison wardens either listening to him or afraid of him. Enter this prison John William Grey (David Berry), the new guy in charge. Jamie’s met him before, he was the dude who he let live at Presonpans and then his brother sent him home after Culloden. It isn’t quite smooth sailing at first since Grey is still a little embarrassed over the encounter and not inclined to speak to Jamie as the prisoner’s representative, but they muddle along at first.

When a man is found wandering the hills mumbling about a Frenchman’s gold and a white witch, which Grey heard about from his predecessor, he calls on Jamie to help him translate. Jamie does and promptly escapes chasing the “white witch” before returning three days later and revealing he knew who Grey was the entire time. They go back to their romantic candlelit dinners and chess games before confessing about their past. Jamie talks of Claire while Grey tells of his friend who died at Culloden. Grey places his hand over Jamie’s and strokes it, but Jamie doesn’t play that way and threatens to kill John and it’s really tense.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) for everyone Ardsmuir gets the orders to close and all the prisoners are all transported to America (including Jamie’s Godfather Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), who’s alive by the way- SURPRISE!). Jamie is a pretty notorious traitor so no indentured servitude for him, though. But John Grey can still pull a few strings and arranges for Jamie to finish out his sentence in England at a place called Helwater where he’ll be a groom. Grey promises to check in on him a few times a year, too! Grey considers his debt to Jamie now paid.

1) Diana Gabaldon has always maintained we “never knew” if Frank actually cheated, because Claire is an unreliable narrator. Here, it’s pretty darn clear. What did everyone think when Frank casually mentioned he had seen the movies already, and Claire thanked him for being discreet?

Vida (@blacklanderz): My stomach churned there for a moment. At first, I wasn’t sure if he was admitting it then; but when Claire mentioned him being discreet, that clinched the deal for me! Although their relationship has been strained, I really felt badly for Claire. Again, she was trying to connect and spend time with him, albeit too late, and again he just burst her little bubble.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): DG can maintain whatever she wants, but she doesn’t get to decide how people interpret events and characters or anything else for that matter. She says Claire is an unreliable narrator, but it’s in Claire POV that we hear about his mistresses, “Do you want to know how many of your discarded mistresses have come to see me, to ask me to give you up?”. That’s a pretty clear sign to me that Frank had been cheating. Claire is that much of an unreliable narrator?! *eyeroll* I thought Claire was trying to make an effort to spend some time with Frank and he completely shot her down. He could have lied, but no, he enjoyed hurting her. And as for being discreet, since when is doing anything in public with your ‘Wife Approved, But Be Discreet’ girlfriend being discreet?! I thought people got a hotel room under assumed names or something when trying to be discreet, but hey, what do I know?

Heather (@taterbug160): Is it cheating when they very clearly say they had an agreement that they were allowed to see other people and live separate lives? I think he was living in that agreement and Claire maybe didn’t realize he had already found someone else to see some films with! In a marriage of convenience, which they are in, Claire’s needing the discreteness is paramount to maintaining the sense of normalcy for Bree and their reputation in their respective circles. I wasn’t that phased by it. It’s time Frank had a little happiness.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): Awkwarddddddddd. For the first time Claire looked disappointed and maybe a bit jealous that Frank isn’t vying for her attention. Dearest Claire, the world can’t revolve around you forever sweetheart.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): I’ve been waiting for Professor Randall to get frisky with someone else (those glasses and a PhD is a real catch). I was more interested in Claire’s reaction which was one of surprise and slight disappointment. She took him for granted and now he’s finding happiness somewhere else. You made your bed Claire so lie in it! But don’t worry Frank didn’t get busy in it.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): Frank was just being honest to Claire that he has seen those movies. He did say that they agreed that they were free to do what they wanted. Claire had to accept the fact she was partly the reason for it.

Dee (@OL_America): Claire may have thanked Frank for his discretion, but was he really being discreet? It seems to me discretion would have meant not mentioning at all that he had already seen the movies. Instead, he could have simply offered alternative suggestions. Not bringing attention to the fact that he had seen the movies with someone else would have been true discretion. Frank just couldn’t resist delivering that little zinger.

2) We’re meeting David Berry as Lord John! What were your first reactions?

Vida (@blacklanderz): OMG! He truly held his own on screen with Sam and totally fits the role of Lord John Grey perfectly. He has the look and presence of authority. Oh and did I forget to mention he is handsome as hell! I can’t wait to see his character development over the seasons.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): I love Lord John Grey! Love. Him!! And he was immediately so thirsty for Jamie as soon as he saw him all wet and dirty. I’m all aboard this ship!! David was incredible! I’m so excited that he is part of Outlander and I can’t wait to see more of him in action, especially with Jamie.

Heather (@taterbug160): YES YES YES. Talk about the perfect person to play this incredibly wonderful character. So many nuances of emotion and such a wonderful presence. Lord John is one of my favorite characters and I loved David’s way of bringing him to life.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): “Is it always so gloomy?” IT’S A PRISON JOHNNY BOY not a the Palace of Versailles! He’s a very pretty boy. Icy blue eyes, sculptured brows, blushed cheeks & rosy tinted lips. Ladies & gentlemen we have a real life Ken doll.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): His skin is flawless.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): When he first showed up David Berry did look like someone who had a “rod up his a$# “. He might not be exactly the way Diana described him in his looks but the way David Berry brought Lord John to life… John Grey’s reactions to Jamie and his vulnerability showed with those tears in his eyes. Giving me the feels all over.

Dee (@OL_America): Having seen David Berry in other productions, his superb portrayal of LJG was no surprise. There was great chemistry between David and Sam, and I look forward to seeing them together in future scenes. No doubt the same will apply to David’s scenes with Caitriona. Those will also be fun to watch. This is another example of superb Outlander casting, even if David isn’t a blonde (as described in the books).

3) Murtagh’s alive and we’re seeing our first major book departure! What were everyone’s thoughts??

Vida (@blacklanderz): I was grinning like a Cheshire cat and actually started clapping when they showed him. I just love Duncan Lacroix’s performance of Murtagh and what he has brought to the character. I didn’t mind the departure. It was fitting that he would be in prison with Jamie – always by his side. Now, it will be interesting how they close out his character arc.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): There’s nothing I can do about having the big Murtagh moment completely spoiled for me a week prior to the episode, so all I’m going to say is that I’m happy they decided to keep Murtagh alive and I look forward to seeing him in season 4.

Heather (@taterbug160): I TOLD YOU SO. Now knowing he’s being sent to the Americas, I only wonder if we’ll see him there at some point.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): Considering it was the worst kept secret in Outlander history, I wasn’t shocked. I didn’t really understand Murtagh’s role though. Maybe it’s to show the viewers that Jamie truly is the King of Men with his new healing weeds & concoctions? Jamie is certainly looking good all dirty and starving and freezing so I wouldn’t refuse any magic tea from Himself.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): I think this departure worked. Bring him back and then shove him off to the colonies! He became a beloved character and though I would’ve accepted if he died at Culloden, I was pleased to see his coughing self this episode. He didn’t affect any major plot lines and I’m curious to know where he’ll be later in the story.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): Ok?! This will be an interesting storyline. I don’t mind Murtagh being alive, but it leaves one to wonder what will be his role is going to be in the future. Since I’ve read the books Ron Moore may have him as one of the men on the Ridge. Looking forward to his part in the future.

Dee (@OL_America): Although Ron Moore spoiled it earlier in the week, it was a delight to see that Murtagh survived Culloden. It would be nice to know the details of how that happened, but we will take it as a positive departure from the books. When we last saw Murtagh in the episode, he and the other prisoners were being sent to the colonies as indentured servants. Hopefully this sets up Murtagh to assume the role of Duncan Innes in the book series. Surely Moore wouldn’t keep Murtagh alive just to have him perish on the voyage to the colonies. Right?

4) Jamie hears the words of Duncan Kerr and immediately knows at least something about what he’s talking about. Lord John takes Jamie’s word about the translation and what he found awfully easily. Do you think he was being just a little naive?

Vida (@blacklanderz): Perhaps he was being naïve, but did he have a choice? His past experience with Jamie probably led him to believe he was being honest. Since he couldn’t understand Duncan, in the end, he didn’t have a choice but to believe what Jamie told him.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): All the Duncan Kerr stuff felt a little off to me. I get that it probably wouldn’t have worked out logistically to show us exactly what Jamie did during his brief escape, but I guess I just wanted more information than the bits we got from the red coats and Jamie himself about his brief escape. Yea, LJG was a little naïve to believe Jamie but he’s got a major crush on the dude so it makes sense that he would eat up whatever Jamie had to say.

Heather (@taterbug160): I think LJG can be a little naive, but I also think he’s patient. And he’s willing to wait and try and use his power of conversation and chess and pheasant in a wine sauce to woo him into opening up to him.
Jenni (@freckledjenni): Absofeckingloutely. Johnny boy has a crush on Jamielicious. Lord John is lost in Himself’s eyes & would shovel horses manure if it meant Jamie would give him a little lovin’ touch.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): Lord John is too busy getting lost in Jamie’s blue eyes to pay attention to that. Thanks to their shared history I think Lord John wants to be Team Jamie so he’ll whistle past some things as long as that dirty prisoner keeps coming to dinner.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): Mixed feelings here. Yes Lord John was “naïve” for a Major to just trust Jamie knowing that he was already duped in the past, but then Lord John knew Jamie was a man of his word.

Dee (@OL_America): It didn’t seem that LJG had 100% confidence that Jamie was telling him the whole truth about his conversation with Duncan Kerr. He questioned Jamie about it a couple of times, but there was no way to prove or disprove the validity of Jamie’s claims. However, slowly LJG and Jamie are building a margin of trust in each other based on mutual respect as honorable men.

5) As if it wasn’t bad enough that Frank told Claire about his cheating, he even had his mistress pick him on the day of his wife’s graduation from med school. Why do you think he went that far?

Vida (@blacklanderz): This is where the writers were brilliant in showing that he was just being mean. Even though he was trying to rush Claire out of the house, he admitted later he knew this would humiliate her. I believe he wanted her to feel what he feels with his colleagues – embarrassment that their marriage is a farce. Why else would he allow Candy/Sandy to enter the house and be seen by all of Claire’s colleagues? He could have asked her to wait in the damn car. I also liked this scene because it showed the closeness between Claire and Dr. Joe. He kept his eyes on Claire the entire time, was close by and watched Frank’s interaction with her. I do hope the showrunners show more of Joe and Claire’s relationship.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): Frank is an a**hole! Really dude?! The day of Claire’s graduation is the day you decide to have a date with your lady friend? F you, Frank! He claims to be soooooo concerned about Bree but then why wouldn’t he suck it up for a few hours and participate in all the graduation fun? I’m sure Bree would have loved that. But no, she got to see her mother keep her cool, get everyone out of the house as her father stood there with his mortified girlfriend. Frank wasn’t thinking about anyone but himself because he’s an entitled selfish prick. And the guy should’ve been carrying around his own body chalk he played the victim so well.

Heather (@taterbug160): Again, I don’t think he’s cheating, and I don’t consider her a mistress. He’s obviously worried about the time Claire is supposed to leave, so I KNEW this was coming and it made me cringe! Of course it’s too far! Meet her down the street! Meet her around the block! Do not have her come to your house when you are having a celebration for your WIFE that may run long! Do not have her come to your house at ALL. Frank is usually more calculating and practical than that so I think it’s a bit out of character for him anyway.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): Because he finally gave up caring about Claire’s comfort and feelings. For the sake of Bree he danced on eggshells around Claire and he’s finally found happiness and being all stupid and in love. When people are in love they do stupid things like showing off their new love muffin to Claire at her own med school graduation party.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): Oh Frank. He wanted to stick it to Claire so why not screw up the dinner reservation time? At this point they’re just roommates and all that pain for the past many years bubbles over and he wants to hurt her just as bad as she’s done to him. I actually don’t think he planned it on purpose but when it began unfolding he wasn’t going to stop it.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): Frank thought the dinner was going to be earlier at 6 pm and you could see his reaction when Claire told him 7pm. I think he did not intentionally plan that Claire would be meeting his assumed mistress. He later did say that he wanted Claire to have a taste of her own medicine and wanted to hurt her.

Dee (@OL_America): Having his mistress pick him up at home, on Claire’s graduation day no less, was a blatant act of revenge. Frank so much as admits that, telling her he was giving her “a taste of [her] own medicine.” He knew she would be humiliated in front of her colleagues. Even Dr. Joe gave him the side-eye. Perhaps it is easier for non-book readers to have sympathy for Frank, but I just can’t muster much compassion for him. Then again, Jamie Fraser is a tough act for most men to follow.

6) Why do you think Jamie feels so comfortable speaking with Lord John about their collective pasts? What do you think attracts Lord John to Jamie?

Vida (@blacklanderz): They didn’t really indicate the amount of time they were at the prison. But, he probably feels comfortable because Lord John Grey’s discussion of losing someone close to him in war reminded him of the Highlanders and men he lost. So, they had empathy for each other: For what they both lost, for both being at that prison and because of the somewhat companionship they formed. Oh c’mon, you know what attracts him to Jamie, like e’rybdy else. Jamie exudes confidence, strength, is an Alpha male . . . AND is one hunk of a man . . . The King of Men!

Jamie (@jamiesrule): I think Jamie felt comfortable because it provided him an opportunity to relive a moment when he and Claire were together. Have you seen the other prisoners? No wonder LJG is all about Jamie. Haha!

Heather (@taterbug160): Um, because Lord John is a the best, most honorable, compassionate wonderful character ever?! (Can you tell I love me some LJG?) I think Jamie took a bit of pleasure in letting John in on what he remembered. I think that Jamie enjoys sharing memories of their collective past, and it allows him to talk about Claire, and John realizes how much he cares for her. And that FACE! Have you ever seen a empathetic expression in your life? Lord knows I’m attracted to him.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): Besides Lord John’s come-hither looks, Jamie is genuinely interested in what John has to say. He can tell John is a nice guy behind that fancy red coat. Lord John is attracted to Jamie because Jamie is wicked super hot! John’s been surrounded by dirty, smelly Scots and in walks Jamie. The clouds parted and angels descended from the heavens and it was love at first sight for John. I can hear the violins now…

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): I’m telling you it’s the blue eyes and even beneath the dirt and grease in his hair, Lord John can see the shimmering strands of red. I also think Lord John finds Jamie’s honor attractive and something they share.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): I think Jamie feels that they shared a connection from the past and they were already forming a good bond between them. I also believe that Jamie did not think John was going to use whatever they talked about against him and John was also open to him. What attracts Lord to Jaime would be his character and the way he carried himself. If Jamie was a real Sam Heughan look alike .. who wouldn’t be attracted?

Dee (@OL_America): Both Jamie and LJG are brave, honorable men, and they recognize that in each other. Mutual respect is the foundation of their budding friendship. Even from their first meeting they see it. At Ardsmuir, Jamie thanks LJG for his bravery and willingness to give his life to save Claire’s honor. In terms of LJG’s attraction to Jamie, aside from the physical attraction, Jamie possesses the values and characteristics the Greys hold most dear… honor, courage, and bravery. The fact that Jamie is held in high esteem and seen as a leader among men does not go unnoticed by LJG. He also knows that Jamie is intelligent and well educated. In fact, if they hadn’t been on opposing political sides, they could probably have been friends, as Jamie would have easily fit into the level of society in which the Greys were accustomed.

7) The prison closed really quickly after Jamie’s big confession. Do you buy Lord John’s reason for sending Jamie to Helwater?

Vida (@blacklanderz): Surprisingly, It really did. But, I guess they had to move quickly in order to move the story along. Though it might have been true that he could not commute his sentence and that it needed royal approval, I don’t buy it at all, never did. No way! He probably could have sent him along with the other prisoners to the colonies. But, by sending him to Helwater, it gives him the opportunity to continue to see him by visiting every quarter to ‘ensure his welfare’.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): I think LJG has a good heart so I do believe it was important to him to feel like he had fulfilled his debt to Jamie.

Heather (@taterbug160): I will buy anything Lord John is selling, because I love him. He also gets a pretty sweet gig for Jamie. It could be a lot worse than Helwater.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): Yup. Lord John is in lurveeeeeee so of course he found a special & safer place for the apple of his eye. He’ll also be able to visit his Jamielicious often.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): Total cop-out! Why travel overseas to see your crush when you can just ride over for a few days? And being sent to the colonies was not a golden ticket (thanks to disease and starvation) so he wanted Jamie alive after everything they shared.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): I did notice that right after that scene it was off to Helwater. Lord John had to make a believable story to Jamie about him being a prized prisoner in order to hide the bigger reason that Lord John just wanted Jamie where he can still see him.

Dee (@OL_America): LJG claims that the reason he is sending Jamie to Helwater is because it is the most freedom he can give him under the circumstances. The question is whether LJG has any ulterior motives in that decision. Maybe. The prisoners who were sent to the colonies as indentured servants face an uncertain voyage and future, assuming they arrive safely. Life as an indentured servant in eighteenth century Colonial America was difficult at best, and it would be impossible for LJG to insure his safety there. In comparison, life at Helwater would give Jamie a safe environment where he could work a job for which he had considerable skill and pleasure. LJG knew the family and felt that would have been a more pleasant placement for him. Did the fact that he could still see Jamie at Helwater sway his decision? Probably, but it was also the best for Jamie, at least until a full pardon could be secured.

8) Talk to us about Frank asking for a divorce and whether Claire could’ve forgotten Jamie if Bree hadn’t looked just like him and Claire’s confession to Frank after he’s dead. Why do you think they can only show each other how they really feel after everything is finished between them?

Vida (@blacklanderz): Asking for a divorce is one thing; their marriage was really over once she returned. But to take Bree with him? That was just too much and I didn’t like that at all. Essentially, he was trying to take EVERYTHING from her that reminded her of Jamie. The problem I had with all of this is that they never tried to have a conversation about the time she was away. If Frank had been big enough to allow her that space to discuss it, things might have been different for them. Claire tried to show him love, the best way she could. But Frank wanted her to love him the way he wanted her to and that was never going to happen. In the end, once they both knew it was over and once Frank found someone else, only then could the truth come to bear. That was a painfully sad moment to watch when Claire told him she did love him and that he was her first love. Probably as not to bruise his ego or hurt his feelings, there was no way for her to tell him this at any other time.

Jamie (@jamiesrule): Frank asking for a divorce and then saying he’s going to take Bree with him to England was just another example being a selfish a**hole. He couldn’t just leave Claire, he needed to take as much of Jamie away as he could just to hurt her. I’m so happy he’s dead! I think Claire finally felt like she could confess her feelings because she knew that he probably wouldn’t have believed her if she tried telling him that while he was alive.

Heather (@taterbug160): When Claire said he was just waiting for the clock to run out, she had a point. This is a marriage of convenience and he was just in it for Brianna, so it make sense that once she was an adult, he wouldn’t need to keep up pretenses anymore. He’s been stuck in a marriage with a woman still in love with someone else for a very long time, I think he deserves a little happiness, and honestly a divorce may have given Claire the freedom she needed to get back to Jamie too. Unfortunately, Frank dies and that is the catalyst instead. I think we sometimes don’t realize what someone means to us until after they’re gone. We only had glimpses of their life all those years. There had to be a lot of mutual respect, friendship, and love between them. We were never just going to be shown them holding hands and eating black pudding in all the scenes we have with them. Claire saying her goodbyes to Frank I thought was very beautiful, and gave me the big feels. Thanks for your work Tobias, we’ll miss you.

Jenni (@freckledjenni): “I would like to live the rest of my life with a wife who truly loves me.” He was done being in a loveless marriage. The end. Claire always saw Jamie in Bree & Frank could see it in her eyes. Frank knew she would never love him the way she loved Jamie. When there is nothing left to lose it’s easier to speak freely. Frank was outtie 5,000 from that marriage so he didn’t care what Claire felt. He was ready to fly off into the sunset with his little lady. Claire’s heart was never really in her marriage to Frank when she came back. Seeing Frank all pale and dead made her feel guilty for all his unhappiness the past years.

Jordyn (@urbanoutlander): They took each other for granted for a long time and there was a lot of pain and anger between them. Frank reaches his end and demands a love that he had to go somewhere else to have. Yet you can see that if Claire had ever changed her mind to really love him, he would’ve taken her back even at the end. They tell each other how they feel when there’s nothing left to lose.

Maggie (@mrhvilla): At the end I don’t blame Frank for asking the divorce. He had been trying to work something out with Claire for years even if it was for the sake of Bree. He now was at the end and gave up to have his own life. Since Bree was old enough and “will not be taken” from him he didn’t feel the need for someone who is not there. Claire could never forget Jamie even if Bree did not look like Jamie. He will always be a part of her she longs for. I feel that both Frank and Claire felt there was nothing left to lose in their relationship. In the end Claire knew she had some love left for Frank when she said “You were my first love”. Frank might not be love of her life but they did share a love long ago.

Dee (@OL_America): Claire and Frank’s marriage was doomed from her return, but they tried to make it work primarily because of Brianna. If Claire hadn’t been pregnant when she returned, I doubt they would have stayed together anyway. After meeting and falling in love with Jamie, I believe Claire may have loved Frank but was not “in” love with him. When Frank asks Claire if she could have forgotten Jamie in time if Bree hadn’t looked like him, she replies, “That amount of time doesn’t exist.” Jamie was blood of her blood and bone of her bone, and nothing was going to change that. They show each other how they really feel when everything is “over” because they feel they have paid their debts to each other. Claire may have felt guilt for leaving him and falling in love with Jamie, but she satisfied that debt by staying with him until the day he died. Frank may have felt he had satisfied his debt to Claire and Brianna by staying with them until Brianna was grown. So, when she was eighteen and ready to go off to college, he asked Claire was a divorce. Hence the title, “All Debts Paid.” (That applies to most of the characters.)

Final Verdict: Outlander serves up the business and we don’t all agree, except about one thing: Our new love Lord John!
