What Do You Get When You Mix Heart, Creativity, A Little Faith, & Some Of The Most Passionate Fans Ever? The Web Series, Carmilla.
The cast and creators of Carmilla dish on season 3, life after the show, and the social responsibilities they felt while working on this little web series that could.
Cultural phenomenon. That phrase is thrown around all too much in today’s expanding entertainment field. Good show? Cultural phenomenon. Funny movie? Cultural phenomenon. Over-hyped reality star? Phenomenon. We’ve lost track of what that phrase really means. What’s lacking from those things to truly make them a phenomenon? Passionate fans. Carmilla the web series has them in spades. Cream puffs, as they’re so affectionately called by both cast and creators alike, are the driving force behind this unexpected pop culture hit.
We sat down with the cast and creators of the hit web series Carmilla and chatted about the show and their incredible fans.
Here are some of the top highlights from our fun interview with actors Natasha Negovanlis and Elise Bauman, writer Jordan Hall, and producer Steph Ouaknine.
1) Impossible To Predict And Blind Faith
Elise and Natasha didn’t know the show would get this big, but they had a slight feeling. When we asked the ladies if they had any idea that Carmilla would become such the hit that it has become, they were both in agreement. It’s impossible to predict the success of a show, but sometimes you read a script and you just feel hope. “A weird feeling” of something as Elise puts it. That’s the best way to describe it. Elise was very candid and said that sometimes you can be blinded by the show you’ve created and sort of have blind faith. Neither could have imagined being apart of NYCC now!
2) After Dark Guilty Pleasures For The Cream Puffs
Natasha prefers to write late at night. “Write. I am most creative at really weird hours. So, like 3am.” Elise is happy with just a good nights sleep! Or is she? “I do love skinny dipping in the dark when it’s pitch black and you are in a lake and all you can see is the stars and there’s no difference between the sky and the water.” A thought Natasha was quick to knock down. “That sounds like my nightmares.”
3) Fandom Cravings And Growth
When speaking about how the fandom has grown over the past three seasons, both Natasha and Elise elaborated on the fact that they know how much their fandom craved positive representation. Natasha: “It was always important to me, but it’s become even more important and they have taught me a lot.” Elise echoed the sentiment and said: “The show has grown over two years, and we have grown over two years, so it’s cool to see the audience growing with us as well.”
4) Chemistry Makes For Great BFF’s
Despite what we thought, Elise and Natasha were not BFF’s right away. No, that’s not a knock on either one of them. They were quick friends, they just didn’t get to hang out much away from set until at least the middle of season one. Their friendship grew as the characters got to know each other and it’s certainly clear on screen with their insane chemistry.
5) Character Growth And Show Progression
Being in the magical library was a natural progression from season one. Jordan was rather excited when she said,”By the time you’re in the third season, the choices you make earlier dictate the choices you’re going to be making.” The show is all about progression and growth and creating spaces for these characters to grow.
We had a blast chatting with Natasha, Elise, Steph, and Jordan at New York Comic Con.
