Today at Freeform’s upfront presentation, the millennial-focused television network announced their exciting programming lineup built around top talent, premium original content and prominent Disney properties including Marvel, ABC Studios and Disney theme parks.
Though we were excited with everything released today, there were 3 upcoming shows that stood out to us and made 2018 seem even further away. So sit back and take a scroll down to check out what gained our excitement.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger gives a new meaning to light and dark superpowers
Slated to premiere in early 2018 with a 10-episode season, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is based on the Marvel comics created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Ed Hannigan. It stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, James Saito and J.D. Evermore. The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Joe Pokaski serves as showrunner and executive producer; Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory also serve as executive producers.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
The Bold Type isn’t just about fashion, it’s about finding yourself in a pool with others who are just like you
Inspired by the life of Joanna Coles, chief content officer of Hearst Magazines, The Bold Type stars Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Sam Page, Matt Ward and Melora Hardin as Jacqueline, editor in chief of Scarlet Magazine. Sarah Watson, David Bernard, Ruben Fleischer, Victor Nelli Jr and Joanna Coles serve as executive producers, while Holly Whidden and Matt McGuinness serve as co-executive producers. Currently filming in Montreal, Canada, The Bold Type is slated to premiere on Tuesday, July 11th at 8/7c with a special two-hour premiere.
In the pilot, The Bold Type reveals a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for the global women’s magazine Scarlet. The rising generation of Scarlet women leans on one another as they find their own voices in a sea of intimidating leaders. Together they explore sexuality, identity, love and fashion.
Siren takes a tale about mermaids and gives it a dark and dangerous twist
Siren is based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White, both serving as executive producers and stars Alex Roe, Eline Powell, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Ian Verdun and Rena Owen. Emily Whitesell (“Finding Carter”) serves as showrunner and exec produces alongside Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb. The series will premiere in summer 2018 with a 10-episode series order.
“Siren” takes us inside Bristol Cove—a coastal town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. When the arrival of a mysterious girl proves this folklore all too true, the battle between man and sea takes a very vicious turn as these predatory beings return to reclaim their right to the ocean. The series stars Alex Roe (“The 5th Wave”) as Ben, a bright marine biologist who finds himself drawn to Ryn, a mysterious new girl in town played by Eline Powell (“Game of Thrones”), who is a strange young woman with a deep dark secret. Fola Evans-Akingbola (“An American Exorcism”) stars as Maddie, also a marine biologist who works with Ben, and is highly suspicious of Ryn. Ian Verdun (“Life’s a Drag”) stars as Xander, a deep sea fisherman on a quest to uncover the truth; and Rena Owen (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Helen, the town eccentric who seems to know more about the mermaids than she lets on.
So there it is! The three series we’re looking forward to the most in 2018 on Freeform. But wait, the announcements didn’t stop at those, scroll down and take a look at what else is coming to Freeform.
When all else fails all you need is your best friend
From The Lonely Island comes Alone Together, a half-hour, single-camera comedy premiering early 2018 and starring Esther Povitsky (“Lady Dynamite,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and Benji Aflalo (“Not Safe with Nikki Glaser”). Esther Povitsky, Benji Aflalo and Eben Russell (“Girl Boss”) serve as writers and executive producers. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Billy Rosenberg and Hunter Covington also serve as executive producers. Daniel Gray Longino (“Lady Dynamite,” “Portlandia”) directed the pilot.
Esther and Benji are platonic best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture of Los Angeles. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back … And they have nobody else to hang out with.
Marvel’s New Warriors
Marvel’s New Warriors, slated to debut in 2018 with ten 30-minute episodes, is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Marvel’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”), and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”) serve as executive producers. Kevin Biegel (“Cougar Town”) serves as showrunner and executive producer.
Marvel’s New Warriors is about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world … even if the world isn’t ready. Not quite super, not yet heroes, Marvel’s New Warriors is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once – except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.
Freeform’s first animated comedy
Freeform also greenlit a pilot presentation for Sticks, an animated “Daria” crossed with “Girls” that follows the life of Sticks, a neurotic 20something with a head filled with pop culture references and a love of Chili’s. And did we mention she lives with a giant eagle? Jessica Stickles serves as writer and co-executive producer, with Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City“), Will Gluck and Richard Schwartz also serving as executive producers. Sticks is produced by Olive Bridge Entertainment and animated by the award-winning team at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (“Robot Chicken,” “Buddy Thunderstruck“) in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Hollywood Movie Night with Karlie Kloss
From the producers of the hit show “Hollywood Game Night,” comes Hollywood Movie Night with Karlie Kloss (working title). During this quest, she bumps into the love of her life and suddenly heaven doesn’t seem so great after all. Think “It’s a Wonderful Life” for the Snapchat generation. Produced by Olive Bridge Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television, Will Gluck and Richard Schwartz will serve as executive producers. Angry Angel (working title) is an all-new scripted two-hour movie, premiering in December 2017.
Original Movie – Life-Size 2 Starring Tyra Banks

This time, she’s magically awoken to help a young woman learn to live and love again, and along the way, Eve herself will experience the ups and downs of real life in a fun, edgy, modern Christmas movie. Tyra Banks will also serve as executive producer. Premiering December 2018.
