Let’s Discuss: Shirtless men, mud, and lies. Rachel wasn’t holding back with her feelings in one big Whaboom of an episode. If only DeMario was as honest as the guys who played Never Have I Ever on Ellen.
Things are heating up on The Bachelorette The episode picks up where last week left off after DeMario has shown up. Rachel decides to at least hear what DeMario has to say. She goes outside and tells him that he had so many chances to tell her the truth but kept lying. He’s a boy. She needs a man. Rachel tells him “Thank you” and walks away. However, it seems like he may return in the future or in Paradise. After she gets rid of DeMario, the fun part of the cocktail party begins. Lucas came to talk to Rachel and claimed that Blake was obsessed with him, and a banana somehow made it into the conversation, which may have been what got them both sent home. We’re guessing won’t turn out well when they presumably ride the same plane together to their town. Now that Week 3 finally begins, there’s two group dates and a one-on-one.

The group dates were hilarious this week, from riding horses on Rodeo in the one-on-one to the guys mud-wrestling in the second group date, featuring some of the girls from Nick Viall’s season of The Bachelor including Corinne. Brian, Jonathan, Peter, Alex, Will and Fred went on The Ellen Show to their surprise and Ellen didn’t disappoint. The guys had to go to the crowd and strip ‘Magic Mike’ style – which was a great sight. Then they played Never Have I ever and we may have learned a bit more about the guys than we needed or wanted to. Rachel was secretly just trying to see the guys with their shirts off, but we were too. Sad Fred found out she’s one of the only ones who hasn’t kissed Rachel yet. He tries to and (while holding the group date rose) sends Fred home because he still reminded her of the boy she knew. Pro-tip: don’t know the Bachelorette or Bachelor before the show. With the eliminations of this week, drama happened out of nothing. Lee of all people apparently told the Corinne squad, along with Bryce, that Eric’s motives were poor. Rachel confronted Eric but gave him a rose. He then confronted the rest of the guys and a fight at the cocktail party commences, and we get a “To Be Continued” message.
In lieu of all the drama that went down on this week’s episode, let’s hear what our roundtable has to say:
Erica (@ericaeff) – Reality TV enthusiast and live Tweeter
Sophie (@svershbow) – Book Publicist, Writer, Reality TV Enthusiast
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack) – Co-founder of Bach Bracket, an online fantasy league site for The Bachelor franchise
Nicole (@Buffalogal) – Social Media Manager in the streets, TV binge-watcher in the sheets
Jaci (@norasariah) – TV and Bachelorette newbie
1. The episode picked up where last week ended when DeMario showed up outside the gates at the mansion. Rachel decided to at least hear what he had to say but ultimately chose to let DeMario go. What did you think of her decision?
Erica (@ericaeff): I can’t even begin to describe how pleased I am with her decision. I really thought she was gonna fold for a second after his apology, but no, girlie pulled through and sent DeMario packing! Such good TV.
Sophie (@svershbow): I’m so glad that Rachel didn’t let DeMario back into the mansion. She is way too good for him and handled the situation like a champ, although I did enjoy that he quoted his Uber driver’s love advice. Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll be seeing DeMario again in Paradise.
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): Seeing DeMario sent home was probably my favorite part of the episode. I always hate when a Bachelorette gives the lame dude a second chance when she has a room full of hot, amazing guys who aren’t assholes waiting in the other room. Rachel made it clear she wasn’t here to play games, and her “boy, bye” to DeMario proved she was serious.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Absolutely 100% yes. Good job Rachel. Once a liar, always a liar. How could she trust him? Looking at him made me shudder with disgust.
Jaci (@norasariah): I was SO glad Rachel let DeMario go. No way in hell would that woman let him stay, I knew it. I loved when DeMario said “I can’t let you go.” Boy, SHE can let YOU go, bye Felicia!
2. Lucas and his “Whaboom” mantra had been one of the weirdest things to come out of The Bachelorette, which is saying a lot. Blake brought him up in nearly every conversation and in this week’s episode both Lucas AND Blake went home. Thoughts?
Erica (@ericaeff): Another wonderful decision by Rachel. Blake was so annoying, insecure, and obsessed with Lucas that it made me dislike him MORE than Lucas. I’m thrilled that she sent them both home at once because she simultaneously knocked Blake down a peg AND saved us all from the excruciating Whaboom/Blame 2-on-1 that would’ve inevitably taken place otherwise.
Sophie (@svershbow): Rachel is a queen and these immature men are so beneath her. Get them out of here so we can start to concentrate on the real connections, like Rachel & Peter. MORE AIR TIME FOR PETER!
I am, however, glad that the boys went out on a bang. Lucas talking about Blake seductively eating a banana while standing over his bed, and then Blake explanation that he doesn’t eat bananas because of his obnoxious diet, did give me a real laugh.
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): THANK GOD. The only great thing that came out of that feud is Rachel coyly asking Whaboom if Blake “finished the banana.” Blake went against one on one 101 & used ALL of his alone time with Rachel to talk about Lucas, and Lucas was just… the worst. So if both of them getting sent home means more Peter time on my screen, I’m 100% here for it.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Lucas dug his own hole by being obsessed with Lucas and not showing enough of his own side for Rachel. And their lame-ass white-boy “fight” at the end was one of the most ridiculously awful things I’ve ever seen. Part of me wonders if they were a tag team and this was their ultimate plan for the show. Also, who doesn’t eat bananas?
Jaci (@norasariah): Obviously Lucas from day one was just on the show for publicity. After both Lucas and Blake went home, I felt like they kind of teamed up before the show to get their 15 minutes of fame. Blake kept complaining that he couldn’t focus on Rachel until Lucas left which really frustrated me. Who were you really on the show for, Blake? Rachel or Lucas?
3. What did you think of the Ellen Show group date?
Erica (@ericaeff): The Ellen Show date was a lot of fun. Like last episode with Mila & Ashton, I’m impressed by the big names they’re getting this season! The whole date was the right mix of awkward and funny, and we got to know more about some of the guys that haven’t been given much of a storyline yet. Alex was truly the breakout star of the episode.
Sophie (@svershbow): Ellen = good. Hot male bodies = good. Never Have I Ever = good. What was there not to like!?
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): Let’s be honest, not a lot of “thinking” was going on during the majority of that date. The music started playing, shirts started coming off, & all I could think was dayyyyuumm. I’m surprised Rachel didn’t just cut right to Fantasy Suites after that. Though I was a little disappointed that Bryan was so quick to announce that he was the first one who kissed Rachel. That would have been such a classy moment to stay quiet and let that be a little thing between them. (Like Peter did… just saying…)
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Super fun! I was screaming in my living room! More shirtless men, and whoa ho Alex is now in my top 5! #hunk
Jaci (@norasariah): The Ellen group date was hilarious! I loved seeing all the guys shirtless and we got to learn some new things about them too. Jonathan is way too innocent for this show in my opinion. He hasn’t tried to kiss Rachel but he’s thought about having sex with her? Don’t try to run before you can walk, boy.
4. What did you think of Rachel letting Frederick go after they kissed?
Erica (@ericaeff): Oh god, that whole ordeal was so hard to watch: from Fred asking to kiss her, to him cheering when it finally happened, then her leading him on with the group date rose & ultimately letting him go… One thing it proved is that Rachel is not messing around! She is not here to tiptoe around these guys’ emotions. If she’s not feeling it, it’s not happening. The fact that she knows what she wants is such a refreshing change from previous Bachelorettes (no shade, JoJo).
Sophie (@svershbow): The whole Frederick situation was so cringe-worthy. The only mistake Rachel made was bringing the group date rose with her when she sent him home, which definitely gave Frederick false hope. Clearly he has a Mrs. Robinson complex, and Rachel was honest about not being on board. He’ll get over it.
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): Poor, poor Frederick. He never stood a chance. That whole dismissal was terribly awkward. From his uncomfortable request to kiss Rachel, which sounded about as romantic as a little kid asking their babysitter if they can watch TV for 10 more minutes, to Frederick telling the camera he could “see Rachel as his wife” at the exact same time we could see Rachel physically recoiling from their kiss… It was painful. He seems like a good dude, though. I don’t blame him for crushing on Rachel for over a decade, but it’s probs time to move on.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Awful. Sad. Fred was such a sweetheart and it looked like a great kiss! But also, I respect her decision for being honest with him on not feeling it and not leading him on.
Jaci (@norasariah): Rachel letting Frederick go PISSED. ME. OFF. She really has a lot of growing up to do. He’s a grown ass man and she can’t see past childhood, it’s so infuriating. I feel so bad for him because I can tell he’s really in love with her but she can’t get over how he used to act as a child. Newsflash, Rachel: everyone was a bad kid at one point. Let it go.
5. This week Alex, Anthony, and Eric got date roses. What did you think of her picks?
Erica (@ericaeff): Alex getting the Ellen group date rose was absolutely the right decision. He’s a really endearing mix of cute and sexy. I loved how he wasn’t so in his head about not having kissed Rachel yet, unlike the other guys. That said, when they eventually kissed it was kind of, um, stiff and uncomfortable. LOL. Anthony was an interesting choice for a 1-on-1 because I hadn’t remembered him at all from the previous episodes. I didn’t really sense a connection on their date either, maybe because they were awkwardly riding horses down Rodeo Drive. That was seriously weird. Eric was also a questionable choice for the mud wrestling group date rose. I liked that he was able to be upfront & honest with Rachel, but like Anthony, I don’t really see them as a match going forward. I feel like maybe Rachel offered him the rose to send a message to the others: no more snitching!
Sophie (@svershbow): Alex is such a sleeper threat, and I’m loving it! He seems very genuine, and extremely quirky, especially in the fashion department. Last week’s singing incident had me scared, but after seeing his move on The Ellen Show I’m here for this relationship. Alex: mending US/Russian relations one lap dance at a time.
Anthony seems like a lovely young man. I feel like we didn’t learn anything about him, but he’s certainly nice to look at! I’m guessing top 6, cut before hometowns.
I cannot with Eric. Dude was the first person to really crack this season, and it’s way too early for that BS. To be honest he looked like he was on drugs for most of the episode.
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): Dear lord, where did Alex come from!? His body personality really shown through in this episode. I’m going to be honest, I enjoyed Anthony’s date about as much as those horses enjoyed being paraded into stores on Rodeo drive. I’m pretty sure I got up to refill my wine glass twice. But it seems like he 1. isn’t obnoxious, 2. doesn’t behave like a child, and 3. doesn’t have a girlfriend (that we know of), so I didn’t expect Rachel to send him home. I was cool with the Eric pick. I feel like, despite all the drama, we don’t really know much about him. And he & Rachel seemed to have a good conversation.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Alex 100%, Anthony 100% (also new in my top 5–handsome AND smart AND polite), Eric really did stand out on that group date in the end. I actually do think he is being honest with her. I’m still annoyed she never picks Kenny, who honestly is one of the best picks.
Jaci (@norasariah): I think the Alex and Anthony roses were great choices, but Eric’s was sooo dumb. Why invite all your friends over, ask their opinions on the men, and then not trust their opinions? That makes absolutely no sense to me.
6. Rachel told Eric that Bryce and Lee told her friends that his motives for being on the show weren’t great. Do you think Eric is there for the wrong reasons?
Erica (@ericaeff): I don’t think Eric is there for the wrong reasons. He’s got a more intense side than the others, but I don’t think that means he’s duplicitous. Lee’s whole spiel about how “aggressive” Eric is was so hyperbolic, it reeked of racist undertones. “He was yelling so loud the windows shook”? Boy bye. I can’t wait for Lee to get educated next episode.
Sophie (@svershbow): The fact that a box-head and country-villain were the ones to bring up Eric’s motives doesn’t help my case, but I do agree he’s there for the wrong reasons. I could barely follow his train of thought when he was talking to Rachel & I have no idea what she sees in him!
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): I am so confused how Eric even got framed as the bad guy in this situation. I can’t tell if it was just poor editing or what, but it felt like he was targeted out of nowhere. Yes, he got emotional & loud, but I would be pissed too if I had to use all of my alone time with Rachel defending myself against guys who don’t know me. Also one quick Google search will show you that Lee is the worst. If he’s still on your fantasy team, we’re judging you.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): I really don’t. I think Eric has some anger/trust issues probably from his childhood or growing up, and it might also relate to his getting close to women. I do think he is sincere with Rachel though, and wants to get to know her. I also think he’s on a journey to step out of his comfort zone and learn something from this experience. I am annoyed how the guys are acting so catty and throwing him under the bus.
Jaci (@norasariah): Here’s the thing – Rachel is questioning Eric’s motives but she’s also deciding to let him stay way before the actual rose ceremony? It boggles my mind. The guys are trying to show her what Eric is like when he’s not around her but she’s not entirely trusting their opinions. I don’t see this is as an act of jealousy from the guys whatsoever, I truly think that they have Rachel’s best interests at heart. Eric is hotheaded, angry, and just not very pleasant to be around. He says to make it about Rachel and not him, but HE is the one making it about him.
7. Have your favorite guys from Week 1 changed at all?
Erica (@ericaeff): Kenny is still my number 1. He showed a more playful side this episode which was nice. It balanced out his “dad” narrative. I just need him and Rachel to go on a 1-on-1 so the public can finally get on board 😉
Sophie (@svershbow): My week one favorites were Blake K., Peter and Josiah (at least for the first hour). Blake K. is still my #1, despite getting cut the first week, and I’m madly in love with Peter. Josiah is way too intense and I don’t think Rachel is feeling his vibes.
New favorites: Peter (sigh) and Alex. I’m open to Will, Diggy, and Jamey too but don’t think I’ve seen enough of them to judge yet.
Kaitlyn (@bachbrack): Was Peter any less perfect this episode than he was last week..? Because, the answer is obviously no. Still think Dean is adorable, but he’s going to have to step up the charm if he wants to stick around. Kenny is SO likable, but he actually might be too nice for Rachel. The only person who I didn’t notice on night one that I’m keeping an eye on is Alex. He makes Rachel laugh and she loves that. And lastly, I wasn’t a fan of Bryan night one, and I still don’t like him. Don’t @ me.
Nicole (@Buffalogal): Kenny is still my #1….Will is def a dark horse that came outta nowhere! And Alex…just show us more of Alex. Shirtless. All the time. And Anthony is def now in my top 5. He’s the whole package.
Jaci (@norasariah): Alex is becoming a favorite of mine for sure. Peter and Kenny are still my top two and I’m quickly becoming attached to Dean. Dean and Peter are probably the most adorable looking of the bunch. I hope they get to stay a long while on the show.
Final Verdict: Three episodes in and with the crazy people of the season gone, the guys will come up with anything to stir up drama.
The guys who weren’t exactly on the show just for Rachel are finally gone, or so we thought. Although the upsetting part was that Rachel sent Fred home when you could tell he genuinely cared so much for her. You can’t fake feelings that aren’t there I guess. After DeMario, Lucas, and Blake were eliminated, it seemed like all of the outrageously crazy antics would be no longer, but that’s never the case with the Bachelor franchise. Drama erupted with Eric in the middle for something that came out of left field because of Lee and Iggy (but mostly Lee).. Sure Eric can be a little more energetic than the others, but it’s clear he cares about Rachel and just wants her to feel the same way he does towards her. The fact that Lee called Eric aggressive is also problematic especially with what we know about his tweet history. What we know for sure is that the cocktail party set up for a dramatic episode when the show returns.
