Clary’s plan to help Jace has a fatal ending we didn’t see coming

Shadowhunters has quite a lot of shocking moments in its latest episode that we definitely didn’t see coming. The episode kicks off where it left off last week. Lilith (Anna Hopkins) is at Magnus’ (Harry Shum Jr) loft asking him for a potion to make a person fall out of love with her. We immediately know that she wants this potion for Jace (Dominic Sherwood). Magnus, unaware of Lilith’s true intentions hands it out to her and gives her the instructions she needs to follow to use it successfully. Back at the Institute, Jace still thinking that what’s going on is connected to his mental health, tells Clary (Katherine McNamara) he is considering going to the Silent Brothers to get help. Clary suggests summoning Ithuriel to see if he can give them some answers and help them out.

Simon (Alberto Rosende), with Jace’s help, learns that Kyle (Chai Hansen) is a werewolf and a member of the Praetor Lupus, a group of werewolves that provide help to new Downworlders who might need guidance to adapt to their new lifestyle. Hurt by his dishonesty, Simon confronts him and is ready to move out. But later, after Jace makes him think things through, he decides to stay.

At Magnus’ loft, Alec (Matthew Daddario) suggests moving in with Magnus but Magnus thinks that they might not be ready for that yet and should give it more time. Although Alec looks like he understands it, he also seems confused by his decision. They have a disagreement later in the episode where Alec confesses to going into Magnus’ things. The issue of Magnus being immortal and Alec being mortal is brought up after they discuss what Alec saw in Magnus’ black box.

Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) goes out on a date with Charlie (Brooks Darnell), the doctor she met in the first episode of the season. She is surprised to find out that she is having a great time, even after she has an encounter with the demons and Charlie takes her to the hospital thinking she needs stitches.

After her plan of sending demons to get Clary fails, Lilith transforms into her demon form and goes in search of Clary, who, with the help of Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) and Sister Cleophas (Lisa Berry), summonsIthuriel at the woods near Luke’s farmhouse. Just when the angel is about to warn Clary of Lilith, Lilith kills him and proceeds to take a part of Clary’s soul. At the end of the episode, Lilith pours her potion into Jace’s drink at the Hunter’s Moon and Jace’s reaction ends the episode with a high note, making us wonder what is going to happen next.

1. We learned what the Praetor is and that Kyle is part of it as a werewolf with the duty of protecting and guiding Simon. Did Simon do the right thing by deciding to continue living with him?

María (@shadowhuntersja): Right now I think that accepting the help of the Praetor and specifically from Kyle is the best option for Simon, because he can no longer count on Luke’s protection due to what happened with the Mark of Cain, nor can he count on the security of being in a clan of vampires because of what happened with Raphael. So at this time, it is his only option to have someone who can protect him and help him with the problem he has. Although we still don’t know what the true intentions of the Praetor with Simon are just yet.

Emmanuelle (@shadowhunters_news): I believe so! I think Jace reassured Simon about Kyle by telling him that his whole duty as a Praetor is to protect him. Plus Simon still needs a place to live!

Sonia (@Shadowhunters.Blood.isnt.Love): I think so. It’s normal that initially Simon was very angry because he felt he was being made fun of. Kyle was wrong, but he was just doing his job and I agree with Jace in this. Simon needs all the help he can get while he tries to understand how things will evolve.

Ashleigh (@edwardanddamon): I think Simon absolutely did the right thing by deciding to continue living with Kyle. I think they have a lot to learn from each other. Simon can learn more about the Praetor and Kyle can perhaps find out more about Simon’s mark.

ShadowhuntersLA (@shadowhuntersla): Undoubtedly, considering the situation Simon is in, he does not have many options. As he said that apartment is a sanctuary and despite the lie, we believe that the chemistry and good vibes between Kyle and Simon are genuine. And Simon being the noble and adorable soul he is decided to give Kyle another chance to be something more than his “guardian” (which in this case is a plus because he can keep him safe from the threats that lie ahead) and also Kyle can provide the answers Simon is looking for.

2. Even if he won’t admit it, it’s clear that Jace cares about Simon just by seeing how he helped him in this episode. Is it safe to call them friends now?

María: With these two nothing is safe. What is clear is that as much as Jace tries to hide it by saying that it is for Clary, Simon worries him in a certain way. Otherwise, he wouldn’t bother so much to find out if Kyle is trustworthy or not, or give him the advice he gave him in this episode. For Simon, it is more complicated to say because ultimately Jace “took” the girl he wanted, but I still think that this relationship will end up being a good friendship (or so I hope). So at the moment, it’s not safe to call them friends but I think it will be in the future.

Emmanuelle: Friends? I’m not 100% sure they’re there yet completely because, in a way, Jace cares about Simon but a lot of it is fuelled by his love for Clary. I think we need more scenes with these two to see them get even closer.

Sonia: “Kyle, this is my good friend Jace.” – “Friend of a friend.” Jace will never admit it even under the most terrible torture, but he cares about Simon and in this episode, we have seen how much. I found Jace very protective in this episode, even though he says he can’t bear Simon we all know that it isn’t true. So yes, we can definitely call them friends and I love their way of interacting.

Ashleigh: I don’t know if I’d call Simon and Jace friends yet, but they’re definitely headed in the right direction. I think Jace is always going to give Simon a hard time, no matter what, lol. It’s great if they can work together though, and help each other, rather than butting heads.

ShadowhuntersLA:  As we know, Jace is quite reserved and does not like to express his feelings, much less to Simon with whom the relationship has been quite complex. But it can not be denied that they have come a long way from strangers, sentimental rivals, brothers-in-law and now ‘friend of a friend.’ They’ve always maintained a mutual respect and their own sense of humor, thus forging a genuine friendship based on unconventional events (of course they are a shadowhunter and a vampire) but these facts prove the honor and trust are adjacent to each other.

3. While talking to Clary, Ithuriel was killed before he could reveal that Lilith is really the one behind the attacks. How do you think the Shadowhunters will react to the news of Ithuriel’s death?

María: Surprised, frightened, angry, with pain and grief. There can be many ways and many reactions. But mainly I think that what will prevail will be fear. We must bear in mind that right now there is a being unknown to them and they don’t know how far their power can go. We must add that this unknown being has just murdered an angel. If it has was able to kill an angel, what wouldn’t it be able to do? And we to add that Clary now knows that the Owl has a Master… If the Owl alone has managed to cause so much damage, what can’t be the master able to do? They face two unknown threats and the unknown always gives some fear.

Emmanuelle: The death of an angel is not a light subject with the Shadowhunters. I feel as if this will solidify the fact that there is an immediate dangerous entity in their presence and we will see them more in action than we’ve ever had.

Sonia: Not well, I’m really sorry for Ithuriel’s death and I hope Clary will not be blamed. Shadowhunters have serious problems to think about and the fact that Ithuriel is dead is very serious. I wonder what kind of repercussions there will be for the angel’s death…

Ashleigh: I think the Shadowhunters are going to be absolutely shocked by the death of Ithuriel! They’re definitely going to be trying to figure out who could kill an angel. I know I was shocked watching the scene. I was talking to a friend on Twitter about how it was like something out of The Vampire Diaries with his heart being ripped out.

ShadowhuntersLA: It will be a huge blow not only sad and devastating but also a wake-up call for the Shadowhunters since they will finally know that what they are facing is an entity so powerful and evil that was able to commit such an atrocity. There will not be time to mourn and honor him since the danger is imminent and his death will be the spark that finally puts them on the right track in search for justice for Ithuriel but also the elimination of one of the greatest threats not only the Shadow World but also the mundane world are facing.

4. After reporting to Alec about the systems’ reboot, Underhill thanked him for paving the way for other Shadowhunters and for inspiring him to come out in the Institute. What was your reaction to seeing this moment?

María: I LOVED IT. It is one of my favorite moments because for me in the words of Underhill is the recognition that Alec deserves because for many people it might be the same as Underhill or I think that is how many people think about Alec. And the courage that Alec showed in episode 12 of season 1 is an example for many people who still have the fear of being what they are because they are judged. Seeing that a person like Alec, that at the beginning wasn’t able to assume what he felt for his Parabatai, suddenly stop his wedding and run to kiss the man he truly loves in front of his family and his acquaintances and also seeing how he continues to defend their relationship even though there are people against it, helps them find that courage that Underhill talks about, to show without fear who they are and who they love..

Emmanuelle: I WAS SO HAPPY! I’m glad the writers added that part in there because a lot of fans wanted Alec’s coming out to be mention in the show. Also, it demonstrates that people of the LGBTQ+ community are all around us. By adding another LGBTQ+ shadowhunter, the writers show that Alec and Aline aren’t the only ones and that it is way more common than a lot of people think.

Sonia: I was pleasantly surprised by Underhill’s gesture of thanking Alec. Alec is in a moment of crisis and I think it was important for him to know that the path he took has paved the way and given other people the courage to come out.

Ashleigh: I thought it was such a great moment for both Alec and Underhill. I felt really proud of Alec that he had helped his fellow Shadowhunter in this way.

ShadowhuntersLA: The first reaction was surprised since we didn’t know that Underhill felt that way and the moment when he thanked Alec for inspiring him to come out was very emotional. In a certain moment of our lives, all of us want acceptance, so the fact that Alec can provide that to another human is amazing, it shows that he’s a leader in so many ways. With that scene, we are dying to see how many more can be out and be their true selves. Shadowhunters are making a statement and moving forward, changing their rules to a more open, including and accepting world. Sometimes all we need is a brave soul, someone to follow and look up to. Courage is contagious and taking the first step is the harder part but by having someone leading us on the right path, walking becomes easier and liberating.

5. It seems that Izzy was surprised that she had a great time at her date with Charlie. What are your thoughts on Charlie and this possible new relationship?

María: On one hand I’m happy for Izzy, I like to see her smile and having fun again and I like that Charlie is making her feel that way. But on the other hand, I can’t finish trusting this character. I might be wrong later and there might be nothing wrong with him but I don’t know, he seems too good to be real. I hope I’m wrong because I don’t want any more troubles for Izzy,

Emmanuelle: Surprisingly, I am enjoying Izzy and Charlie’s relationship a lot more than I thought I would. Their chemistry is great and Charlie is refreshing as a character. He’s very positive and has a good effect on Izzy. It’s nice to see Izzy do something other than work.

Sonia: Isabelle didn’t really expect to have a nice evening, she was really so surprised. I think Isabelle is very relaxed with Charlie, she was very natural and seemed to really appreciate spending time with him. The problem is that Isabelle isn’t a jewelry maker but a Shadowhunter. I don’t know where this relationship can go but I can say that they are very nice together.

Ashleigh: I don’t think Izzy and Charlie will last but I was really happy to see her enjoy herself and have a good time. I’m hoping nothing bad happens to Charlie since he’s inadvertently placed himself in danger just by associating with Izzy. I think Izzy will be crushed if anything happens to him.

ShadowhuntersLA: We see Charlie as a good person, but not for our Izzy. He seems so cool and the way he was worried about Izzy walking home alone was very cute, but the thing is that Isabelle’s life isn’t simple. To her being a shadowhunter is a very important thing and the difference between the Shadow World and the Mundane world is too big. We think that instead of bringing to Izzy good things to her life he only can bring worries like making sure he is safe or the fact that Izzy must lie constantly to cover up her shadowhunter “job”, and when you are in a relationship confidence is very important. Charlie is a good guy, but we think he is not prepared for being a part of the Shadow World.

6. At the end of the episode, Lilith fulfilled her plan of getting a part of Clary’s soul and giving Jace the potion. Given how strong his feelings are, do you think that Jace’s love for Clary is completely gone?

María: I think that’s impossible. We saw in the previous episode that Clace’s love was the only thing that prevented Lilith from completely controlling Jace. So if his love was so powerful to stand against the mother of all demons, it won’t be so easy to erase it completely. It is also a love that has passed many tests: first Valentine, then they thought they were siblings, then Climon, the death of Jace… if they have managed to overcome all that, I’m convinced that they will defeat the Lilit’s charm.

Emmanuelle: As strong as the feelings between Clary and Jace are, some things can’t beat magic. I’m a big Clace shipper and you would probably think this upsets me, but on the contrary, I can already see this as a build up to a beautiful ending for the couple. We must remember that Clace is endgame.

Sonia: Absolutely not. Maybe it may seem like that, but I don’t believe it. I trust in the love that wins over everything, and the bond between Jace and Clary I don’t think can be broken. Of course, I would have preferred that Magnus didn’t prepare this potion.

Ashleigh: I don’t think Jace’s love for Clary will ever be completely gone, no matter what Lilith has done. I think Jace will be under Lilith’s control and will do unspeakable things, but there will be a part of him still there, fighting back. Somehow, between him and Clary, they will find a way to break Lilith’s power over him.

ShadowhuntersLA: No, absolutely not. Jace’s love for Clary is so big and strong, and Lilith knows it, for that reason she had to do something about it. Jace has been suffering for so long, and because of that he always had his walls up and control over every single part of his life but when Clary’s entered on it, he hasn’t been able to control his feelings anymore, because now he is learning what it is to be in love in a way that he could have never imagined. As we’ve been seeing for a while, he really cares about Clary and his feelings can’t be erased so easily. So sorry Lilith it was a nice try but not good enough for our Clace.

7. Magnus and Alec had a discussion and though it appears everything was cleared and sorted out in the end, you could tell that Alec was still visibly upset. Knowing that Magnus has lived for centuries, is it okay for Alec to be jealous of Magnus’ past love life?

María: It’s not that it’s okay to be jealous, but I think it’s logical that Alec is jealous. It is basically impossible that he isn’t after knowing part of his past love life. I understand that Alec is jealous of that past, especially after discovering what is in the box, memories of people who have been special for Magnus. Right now, Alec’s head has to be full of “Will I be as special as George was? How long will we be together?” After all, Alec has his mortal side and as much as Magnus repeats that he loves him and that the important thing is now, Alec can’t stop thinking about that.

Emmanuelle: Jealousy is very natural. In my opinion, Alec is full of different emotions. He’s scared of Magnus moving on after he dies, he may also be intimidated by all the past relationships Magnus has had and it’s very normal because Alec cares immensely about Magnus and wants the best for their relationship.

Sonia: “I can’t help but think, if I’m lucky, maybe one of my arrowheads ends up in that box.” This is a topic that has devastated me in the books as well. I think it’s normal that Alec is reacting like that. I’m not saying it’s the right thing, but if you were in his shoes? Alec is afraid, he fears of being a blink of an eye in the life of Magnus, to end up as one of the many memories in that box. And I think that the response of Magnus about living together has created a further insecurity in Alec’s mind, and made him vulnerable. “I’m immortal! I have no choice.” Magnus is clearly not guilty, and he’s the one who has suffered by having to leave people behind in his long way. I think he is afraid of the future because of the love he feels for Alec, and trying to plan with Alec is also part of wanting to protect himself. It’s not easy, I hope they will soon find serenity because I really love this couple.

Ashleigh: I think it’s completely human for Alec to be jealous of Magnus’ past love life. It’s hard for him to understand, and I think he forgets sometimes, that Magnus is immortal and what that must be like. I think it’s going to be a process for Alec to understand and accept.

ShadowhuntersLA: Alec’s life had a drastic change and it may be justified that he still feels insecure about what will happen in the future in their relationship. Knowing that Magnus has had many important people on his life and that, although they are no longer alive, he still remembers them makes Alec think about the distant future that awaits for them as a couple; also considering that Magnus is Alec’s first love is very understandable that he is jealous. That behavior might be the consequence of Magnus being so reserved with his past life. A relationship is always going to have ups and downs and Magnus knows that better than anyone, so we think he must be more patient and comprehensible with Alec and remember that for him all of this is new and complex. But Alec needs to trust on Magnus’s love and try to stay in the “here and now”, just like Magnus said.

Final Verdict: Lilith keeps proving she’ll do whatever it takes to bring her son back

In this episode of Shadowhunters, Lilith comes in full force. If we weren’t scared enough by her yet, we can honestly say that we are terrified of her now. She kills Ithuriel. That’s something we never thought we would see happening on the show. Seeing her in her demon form reminded us of all that she is capable of doing. And now that she has Jace completely under her power, she is closer than ever to bring Jonathan back from the dead. If we thought Lilith was evil, imagine her and Jonathan working together? We got chills.

If the Shadowhunters were not on full alert with the attacks on mundanes already, after learning that Ithuriel is dead, they are going to be. We feel that it is time everyone sits down and comes up with a plan together. They all keep working separately, doing research and trying to find out who the Owl is, when maybe what they should do is work together.

Magnus and Alec start having disagreements over things that reflect how their relationship will be affected in the long run. It’s understandable that these topics are being discussed, after all, Magnus is immortal and will outlive Alec at some point. It’s hard watching a couple you love go through these moments, but it is also important to see them. Every couple faces issues, and as much as we love Malec, we know that they need to have their discussions and do some conflict solving if they really want to make their relationship solid and stronger than ever.

After learning the truth of Kyle’s identity, we have to say that we are still liking where this is going. He can give Simon the guidance and courage he needs to control his mark and the new powers he might have now. Seeing Jace help Simon in this episode is pleasantly surprising. Simon needed that help and extra push Jace offered. We hope we can see these two form a good friendship eventually in the show.

With that potion, Jace won’t be the only one suffering some changes, Clary will feel different too. After all, she did lose a part of her soul. We’re just afraid of how she is going to react when Jace doesn’t show any love in his eyes. Will Clary know that something is wrong? Will Alec figure out his Parabatai is not the same and has something darker inside of him?

We have the feeling that something even bigger is coming. And after this episode, we are truly scared of what it might be.
