The new High Warlock of Brooklyn is introduced in a party that turns into chaos
Shadowhunters 3×02 “The Powers that Be” was all about confessions and discoveries. It kicked off with Magnus (Harry Shum Jr) and Alec (Matthew Daddario) going to the new High Warlock of Brooklyn’s place to, as Magnus said, pass on the torch. This is where we meet Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz), who clearly isn’t fond of Magnus. After their chat with Lorenzo and saying hi to Madzie and Catarina, some kind of dark magic seems to hit the place, hurting some warlocks in the process. The day after, Lorenzo visits Magnus thinking he was involved in the attack and demanding some answers. And after Magnus tells Alec his father is the Prince of Hell, Asmodeus, they both make the plan of going back to Lorenzo’s place where Magnus investigates what happened while Alec distracts Lorenzo.
Back at the Institute Jace (Dominic Sherwood), with the help of Izzy (Emeraude Toubia), sets off his plan of taking Clary (Katherine McNamara) out on a date. But as they’re taken to their table, they bump into Simon (Alberto Rosende) and Maia (Alisha Wainwright) who are also on a date and of course, sitting next to where Clary and Jace were going to sit. In probably the most awkward scene we’ve seen on the show ever, the four of them are stuck with trying to have a good time without making the mood too uncomfortable for all of them. To raise the level of awkwardness a couple of more bars up, Clary and Simon learn that Jace and Maia slept together. Back at the Institute, Magnus and Alec find a way to spread the Institute angelic power to the city and prevent the warlock magic lines from being corrupted again, but since it’s a risky one, Raj (Raymond Ablack) and other Shadowhunters don’t agree it’s the best way to go. They go as far as blocking them out of the system, making it harder for Alec and Magnus to spread the magic. But at the end, both of them work together and are able to do it.
At the end of the episode, Simon gets cornered by the werewolves, who want him to move out. When he refuses, one of them proceeds on starting a fight but as soon as he tries to hit him, there is a force that pushes him back, smashing him into a food truck and leaving him unconscious. This is where we learn what the mark on Simon’s forehead is capable of. It appears to be some kind of shield that won’t let Simon get harmed but it will hurt his opponent at the other end.

1. This was an episode filled with great Malec moments. One that stands out for us is when Magnus tells Alec who his father is. What was your favorite Magnus and Alec moment from the episode?
Emmanuelle (@shadowhunters_news): Hands down when Alec helped Magnus get into Lorenzo’s house to investigate. There was this nice comedic feel to the scene that we haven’t really seen yet from Shadowhunters. Matt and Harry executed it perfectly, from the facial expressions to the dialogue itself – it was very entertaining to watch.
Megan (@TMIronSisters): There are so many to choose from because we were gifted with such a Malec-centric episode: it’s hard to pinpoint just one. I suppose it’s a mix between the release of the angelic power when you see them working together to save the city and then Alec lightheartedly jokes he did it all by himself and the final balcony scene which is such a contrast to the aforementioned scene. It’s a scene reminiscent of previous seasons in which Alec once again reassures Magnus that he accepts him no matter who he is or where he came from. I think together those scenes show the many dynamics to their relationship. (But of course I loved the morning scene and the whole sequence in Lorenzo’s house)
ShadowhuntersLA (@shadowhuntersla): The Malec feels were all over the place, it’s a wonderful thing to see. We’ve seen them working together before but this time there was a certainty about them doing the job that only can be achieved by trusting your partner with all you have. Alec was so confident about Magnus’ spell and magic, he never doubt things could go wrong. And Magnus relied on Alec to do what needed to be done, from giving orders to the other Shadowhunters to activating the core. They truly are a power couple.
ShumDario News (@shumdarionews): The little heist they pulled off in order for Magnus to figure out what was happening to the ley lines was probably one of the funniest things we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing throughout the show. From Magnus’ graceful movements to Alec’s mediocre at best social skills, everything was fantastic. It was fun seeing them do something completely different and lighthearted, they certainly deserved that after everything they have been through.
Ana (@baneandlewis): My favorite Malec moment from the episode was probably when we saw the two of them working together to get into Lorenzo-s house. The facial expressions and things they did were so funny and it was really entertaining to see them this way. I also loved the bit of them working together at the end when they were trying to expand the angelic line. It’s like a tease of what they would look like working together in a fight.
2. This episode introduced Javier Muñoz as Lorenzo Rey, the new High Warlock of Brooklyn. So far, he doesn’t seem to like Magnus at all. What do you think of this new character?
Emmanuelle: He’s interesting. He reminds me a lot of Victor Aldertree from season 2B: a random character that walks in and takes power. I’m curious to see more of his character develop as well as his relationship with Magnus. Also, Javier’s acting and style just fit in perfectly with Matt and Harry in every scene they had, it’s refreshing to see an actor new to the show being able to adapt so quickly.
Megan: Sue me but I love him. It helps that he’s played by Javier because I’m a huge Hamilton fan but I think as soon as he realises Asmodeus, and therefore Magnus, are not the ones behind the demonic magic he’ll be a help rather than a hindrance. I’m sure Magnus will always bare a grudge and I don’t blame him but I think Lorenzo is a good opponent for Magnus. He’s not an all out villain but he poses a threat to Magnus’ status and reputation. In some ways I find him similar to Magnus; flamboyant, knowledgeable and extravagant but he isn’t so willing to see the good in people – warlocks and Shadowhunters alike – and that’s where he’s going to clash.
ShadowhuntersLA: First of all, cheers to Javi for his great performance as Lorenzo, it’s truly a pleasure to watch him in our screens. Now, speaking of Lorenzo himself, I just think he’s kind of a resented warlock, the one who is always in second place, envying Magnus and now he finally has a chance to stand up and shine. So he’s just posing around, but instead of actually focusing on doing the job he just saw this as a chance to humiliate Magnus and go rough with the Shadowhunters, so far he seems harmless. Right now I think of him as a resentful warlock. I hope we get to see so much more of his power and true intentions.
ShumdarioNews: Javier did amazing in this episode and we cannot wait to see what else he is bringing to the show. It’s so nice to see someone who’s a fan of the show also be on it. As much as we all love Javier, we cannot say the same about Lorenzo. So far, he has not only dissed Magnus but also blamed him for the incident at his own party and then took all the credit for something he didn’t fix. Lorenzo and Magnus clearly have a history between them and whatever it was, wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows so we are very excited to find out where this strong dislike Lorenzo has for Magnus came from.
Ana: I just love the fact that Javier Muñoz, an actor who was first a loyal fan of the show is now on it. It’s really awesome for us as fans to see that. I think he did a fantastic job making us don’t like Lorenzo, which was kind of the plan. Lorenzo seems like a very resentful character so far but I hope we get to see more of him and understand why he is acting the way he is.
3. Maia and Simon are getting closer. Seeing how the werewolves are against their relationship, we are thinking the vampires are not so happy about it either. Do you think they should be worried about getting more hate from other people too?
Emmanuelle: Maia and Simon seem bothered at first from the negative attention they were receiving. Especially with someone as headstrong as Maia, there was nothing to worry about. This isn’t the first cases of differences in the Shadow World having issues with relationships (as we saw from Magnus and Alec). I think with Simon’s new mark and its power, they will finally be able to enjoy their relationship without having to worry about getting hurt.
Megan: Oh I’m sure Raphael will have something to say about it but I don’t think they should worry about what other people think. The people that know them best are happy for them and now that Simon has the mark he doesn’t really have to worry about any physical harm being done to him. I also believe that Maia won’t stand to listen to anyone else’s opinion. She’s strong-minded and badass and frankly it’s no one else’s business who she dates. If she wants to date Simon she will and damn whoever frowns upon it.
ShadowhuntersLA: They should, the Shadow World is a very intolerant world and stigmas have been perduring for ages so, seeing a strong, solid couple as Simon and Maia is threatening all the foundations of their World. Not only the so known rivality of vampire vs werewolves but also to the Shadowhunters since if something goes wrong one kind will look up for revenge and things can get ugly. And as far for the seelies is more about the fixation the Seelie Queen has with Simon, and we don’t know how far she would go to have Simon only for her.
ShumdarioNews: It’s not so much about getting hate from people but not wanting to get into trouble with their respective clans and packs. Both the werewolves and vampires have a strong dislike for the Clave and their laws, but they still fear the consequences nonetheless. Both groups know that as long as they stay in their own territories, they are less likely to have issues with each other and the Clave. Simon is making this difficult by residing in werewolf territory, and now that the repercussions of carrying the Mark of Cain are showing, there may be even more trouble.
Ana: I think that if there is something Simon and Maia have been proving to be good at, is at ignoring what other people might think of them. Both of them are very strong so I don’t think they can be affected that much about what other people might think of them. Sure, it’s tricky in this situation, since vampires and werewolves can very dangerous beings. But with the mark Simon has now, I don’t think they should be that worried.
4. At the Institute, Luke gave Izzy the advice of not diving too deep into her work and make time for herself. Do you think Luke is right in suspecting that that is what Izzy has been doing?
Emmanuelle: Luke understands what Izzy is doing, she’s putting all her time into work because probably feels the need to repay the shadowhunters for all the time she wasn’t working while dealing with her addiction. Luke explained in the episode how his own guilt for joining the Circle caused him to do the same. I hope we get more interaction between these two characters and see Luke give Izzy more advice.
Megan: I think he is right as Luke often tends to be. Being slightly more on the outside he sees things more objectively. Izzy is trying to make up for lost time, doing twice the amount of work because she was so out of it during her addiction. I also think she feels guilty for bringing Sebastian into the institute and I suspect there is loneliness as well. Raphael dropped her pretty quick as a way to aid his own recovery and everyone else around her seems to have someone to confide in.
ShadowhuntersLA: Definitely. Maybe it’s a way to punish herself for the whole thing with the vampire venom, or maybe she wants to focus on something and avoid thinking about it. One way or another, she needs to listen to Luke (I was glad to see someone finally giving her an advice and not the other way around) and make time for herself, she deserves a life, she deserves to love and be loved.
ShumdarioNews: It’s safe to say that burying oneself in work at the Institute is a very Lightwood thing to do. She might not want to risk the possibility of something as bad as addiction happening to her again, or she might simply fear heartbreak. Time for herself means going out and being with people and at the moment, that is clearly not her mindset. What she said about letting her brothers and Clary go out and have fun is true, she knows they’ve all been through a lot. Izzy might not want to face the fact that she also had a hard time lately and is in need of a break as well.
Ana: I hadn’t actually thought about this before, but I do think he is right. Izzy went through a lot of things last season and after almost losing Max I think she is trying to repay all the time she has been missing and not as on top of things as she would have liked. Luke has been through a lot of lost in the past, his Parabatai and then Jocelyn. So I think if anyone can understand what Izzy is going through it is him.
5. In a very sweet way, Jace confessed to Clary that he is scared of messing up their relationship. But we know he is also worried about physically hurting her. What was your reaction to seeing him opening up to Clary?
Emmanuelle: It was very sweet of him. We haven’t really seen Jace being this vulnerable emotionally since episode 3 of season 2 with Alec and this just reminds viewers that he does care about the people he loves. As a big Clace shipper, it made me smile because you could see how he pays attention to everything Clary does and cares a lot about her.
Megan: Jace often comes across as someone who is better at acting first and asking questions later but honestly I think he has such a way with words. This particular storyline always got me when I read the books and seeing it unfold on Shadowhunters I have high hopes that Jace is going to move me beyond that experience of reading. I’m always gratified when characters like Jace open up about their true feelings, when they say things that perhaps they’ve been too scared to admit in the past because it shows a development within their character as well as a development in their relationship with others. I think Clace are going to be one to watch this season, especially Jace.
ShadowhuntersLA: It warmed my heart. Seeing Jace talking about his feeling always has that effect on me. He has gone through a lot and I think he needs someone to remind him he is loved and that people around him are there for everything he needs, even if it’s just a hug. I’m really happy he’s opening up.
ShumdarioNews: Being open and honest about feelings is not something they teach Shadowhunters, so it’s no surprise that Jace struggled with being vulnerable in front of Clary. It was good to see him be honest and open with her because Clary has been through a lot these past two seasons, to say the least. It was about time she went on a nice (albeit awkward) date. With Clary being a full Shadowhunter now, no doubt Jace’s presence will be more necessary than ever. Hopefully, he will start to be more upfront about his feelings and eventually the truth about what he is going through will come out.
Ana: I think it was a very special moment. Jace has always been someone who doesn’t let his emotions shown that much, or at least someone who tries to avoid it. Clary clearly means a lot to him and he doesn’t want something silly as fear to stop the relationship from growing. And the way he expressed how much he cares about it was just so cute and beautiful. Who wouldn’t want someone to says those words to him?
6. After what happened with the werewolves, we discovered what the mark the Seelie Queen gave Simon can do. If Simon already stood out because he is Daylighter, we are sensing this will not help him at all. Once the news spreads in the Downworld, how do you think Raphael and other vampires will react to them?
Emmanuelle: More attention means more problems for Simon, sadly. But with this new mark it seems that no one can hurt him so that’s a plus. There will probably be a lot of questions asked by the vampire and even the werewolves, that witnessed it in action, as to what the hell is this mark?!
Megan: Some will probably fear him while others will want to use him. Worse still, some might start to revere him. He was already a target of sorts due to his status as a Daylighter but now Simon needs to be careful about who he trusts now that his mark is public knowledge. I don’t think Raphael’s going to be happy about it but I also think he’ll give Simon similar advice to mine.
ShadowhuntersLA: I think that Raphael and the vampires will not be happy with Simon’s new condition, because now he has another thing that all the vampires in the clan wants.
Also we think Raphael will investigate about the mark and the possibility to obtain it, maybe with the help of one warlock. He might want Simon to be part of the clan because maybe he can protect them then. So in order to obtain his trust Raphael might try to show him that Simon can’t trust the shadowhunters, but that he could trust the downworlders instead.
ShumdarioNews: Raphael will not be happy about it, because he’s been trying to get Simon to be more involved with the vampires ever since he turned. Simon being a daylighter with a mark that makes him seemingly invincible definitely doesn’t help the situation. He’s going to be stronger than Raphael and that fact is not going to be lost on the vampire leader, or his clan. Last season we already saw some vampires willing to pledge their allegiance to Simon, and no doubt that number will only grow as they learn just how powerful he has become. The idea of a war between clans doesn’t seem too improbable now.
Ana: I think they will be a little bit jealous but probably what they will be the most is scared. No one really knows yet what the mark is about. I don’t think anyone really knows what to expect from it. But after knowing what it did to this werewolf they are going to be very scared and will not want to mess with Simon, afraid of what might happen to them.
7. Lilith already made more “disciples” but we aren’t still completely sure what she needs all of them for. If she is already very powerful alone, why do you think she still needs all the blood, sacrifices and magic she can get?
Emmanuelle: I think Lilith is planning something huge. We know she wants to bring her son (Sebastian) back to life so maybe that takes a lot of power but she isn’t just gonna stop there. We will probably learn more about her plans in upcoming episodes.
Megan: At the start of the season we saw her cradling Sebastian’s body. Alone she obviously isn’t powerful enough to restore his life so she’s begun to gather disciples. If the show follows the same line as the books then I know the outcome of her grand plan but I also know that Shadowhunters likes to shake things up so we’ll see what else Lilith has in store as the season progresses.
ShadowhuntersLA: Yes she is very powerful, but as always power has its limits, whether is an Archangel, a greater Demon or Lilith. She is planning something big and without a doubt is committed to avenge what they have done to her son and nothing will stop her for bringing him back. She’ll do everything to achieve that goal and despite her great power she knows that she can not face the Shadowhunters all alone. Especially Clary who has already shown herself to be a nephilim with great power just as Jace has proven he has an unique ability as well, but he’s also carrying a heavy burden since his resurrection and I am almost certain that Lilith has something to do with that.
ShumdarioNews: Every good leader has people working for them, and we have all seen what she is capable of on her own. Lilith’s current goal is to bring Jonathan back and since he is mostly a demon, it may take a little more than what she can do by herself. We don’t know what else she has planned but we know it won’t be pretty and will certainly cause a lot of trouble.
Ana: She is probably following some type of ritual. I think that she is obviously very powerful but for bringing Sebastian back that is not enough. She needs help and maybe give something back in order to have given to her.
Final Verdict: Shadowhunters knows how to mix laughs and feels in the best way possible
This episode of Shadowhunters was like a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to see a show that has the perfect balance of laughs, feels and action-packed moments. We are glad we got to see this playful side of Magnus and Alec’s relationship. Don’t get us wrong, the serious talks are important too, but seeing them work together, Alec trying to distract Lorenzo so Magnus could break in his house, was so enjoyable and so much fun. Seeing Jace opening up to Clary and letting his feelings show was also a special moment for us. We don’t often see this vulnerable side of Jace, so when we do it’s always a scene worth remembering. The double date scenes were awkward too, but it was so good seeing how both couples got closer together and prevented the situation from drifting them apart.
As always, we have a feeling that the problems are just starting. Lilith hasn’t fulfilled her plans yet, and it’s only a matter of time before the team discovers that she is behind the dark magic that hit them. We have to tune in next week to see how Simon deals with having the mark on his forehead now that he knows what it can do. To see how Jace is dealing with the nightmares that he keeps having, he has to sleep at some point and we are scared that he might lose it or that something worse might happen to him. Javier Muñoz was a standout in this episode for us. We can’t wait to see what else Lorenzo is up to in future episodes. With more new characters expected to join the show soon, we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
