Not So Haught
The ever-threatening Earp powder keg finally strikes alight in Wynonna Earp 2×10 “I See a Darkness.” After a ten episode buildup of tensions on all sides — from Nicole and Waverly to Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), Doc (Tim Rozon), and Dolls (Shamier Anderson) — everything slams into high gear as each and every one of our heroes attempts to save Nicole from certain death. However, Waverly sacrifices more than just her morals along the way.

With Dominique Provost-Chalkley taking Waverly to new heights, it’s hard to imagine that even more happens in this episode than the potential death of Nicole (Katherine Barrel). However, Wynonna Earp manages to fit in some difficult questions for Wynonna, as well as a cliffhanger that could change the show forever.
Also, Nicole is married? What?
Breaking down this episode is a stellar lineup of Earpers:
Deb (@Deb_Renee): Earper. If I could Earp for a living, I would. 😄 Also, you may have seen my Wynonna Travels wandering around the globe!
Heidi (@Hidizzle20): Sporty and nerdy. Loves TV, books, vintage toys, Ohio State and cats.
Jessie (@JessieP94): Earper and Dedicated Fangirl.
Marina (@earperfanart): Fan art extraordinaire.
Samantha (@samcaseys): Critic, podcaster, and blogger.
1. Let’s start with a big one: Waverly has had to make a series of difficult decisions this season, but choosing to steal the seal was the hardest one. Would you have done the same? Where does Waverly go from here now?
Deb: Oh, I would absolutely have given Beth the seal! It probably wouldn’t even have occurred to me to ask Gretta for help. I think when you’re faced with the immediate death of your true love, it would be pretty difficult to think about the bigger picture, no matter how apocalyptic it might be.
I cannot WAIT to see where Waverly goes from here. She apparently has no memory of Wynonna or the events of the past two seasons, but I suspect she will sense something is off. She’s too smart and intuitive. I have faith in our little adorkable nerd!
Heidi: Stress makes you do desperate things. I’d like to think I wouldn’t have made a deal with a witch. If I did and it led me to the ring, I’d also like to think I wouldn’t use it. I would definitely put it in my pocket and at least have it on my person as an option if I needed it. I was really hoping Waverly would have put it on Nicole’s finger and used it’s power to bide more time. Then I realized she probably doesn’t know it was the reason for Doc’s longevity. I would have said she will have to join the team to take down Clootie and then face the wrath of Wynonna. Given how the ep ends, let’s just hope she remembers and finds Wynonna!
Jessie: In all honesty, I do believe that if I was put into Waverly’s situation, would’ve done just about the same thing. As much faith as I could have in anyone, if my significant other was put into a dangerous position then I would give no second thought to having done the same. It’s not the prettiest of choices but it’s what I would do. As for where Waverly goes, I feel like she is going to be apologizing a whole lot and giving her sister time and space over the betrayal she committed.
Marina: Oh man. Stealing the seal was a big deal. I honestly can’t blame her, love makes you do crazy things. I do wish she had trusted Wyn but it is what it is. From here…who knows.
Samantha: In retrospect it’s hard for me to tell what decision I would’ve made myself. Wynonna promised that she’d find a cure, and in the end she actually did, but Waverly had already made the deal. I’d like to imagine that I’d be strong enough, and trust Wynonna enough to wait, but in reality I would probably have done the same thing Waverly did.
2. In season 1, we never really got a chance to know the revenants before Wynonna put them down. This season, we’ve been exploring characters like Rosita, as well as Bobo via flashbacks. Is it getting harder to see Wynonna send them back to hell? How do you feel about potentially losing Rosita?
Deb: Ugh, YES it’s harder! We started to get a sense that some of the revenants might not all be completely evil back in season one when Fish was trying to find his love, Levi, who had been chained outside the Ghost River Triangle. I think it’s going to be increasingly hard for Wynonna to just pick them off one by one, especially after learning about Bobo’s past. Things aren’t as black and white as they used to be!
I LOVE Rosita (Tamara Duarte is NAILING it). We don’t know a lot about what really motivates her, or if she’s as good as she seems, but I do get the sense that she loves Doc and genuinely likes our crew of misfits. After all, she was willing to volunteer to help save Nicole despite Wynonna pointing Peacemaker at her, and told her all she had to do was ask for her help. My biggest hope is that they find another way to break the curse before Rosita is the last revenant to kill.
Heidi: I don’t want to lose Rosita. I love that Emily has flipped bad versus good on it’s head! We were conditioned to assume Wyatt was the good guy and all these Revenants were bad. That isn’t the case at all and I love it. My hope is that Wynonna is right and they break the curse by defeating Clootie. What does that mean for the Revenants? Do they disappear like the Orcs in LOTR when Sauron dies? Are they freed from their curse and live a normal life until they die again? Who knows!
Jessie: I really am enjoying Rosita this season and them delving into her character really has made me love her so much. The possibility of losing her does tend to cross my thoughts and I honestly can say that I am saddened at losing her. She is a good addition to the team and I would love nothing more than to keep her on it. With that being said, seeing how we are getting to see the good side of these revenants (Rosita and Bobo), it is getting a bit harder for me to see Wynonna sending them back to hell when she has gotten to know them on a deeper level. Still knowing this, I know it has to happen in order for the curse to end but I am hoping this isn’t any time soon.
Marina: I think the revenants are like any other person, if they’re good then I don’t want to see them die. It’s like Fish and his partner, they were revs but it was still sad. I definitely don’t want to lose Rosita yet.
Samantha: I think it’s definitely getting harder for her, at least for the ones that she knows. We haven’t actually seen her go up against many revenants this season, but it’s noticeably more difficult for her when she does. I think Wynonna will keep her promise to only shoot Rosita last, which seems like a fair deal. Wynonna has to kill a whole lot of other revenants we don’t care about before she ever gets to Rosita.
3. Speaking of Bobo, it’s been two episodes since he “returned” — where do you think he is?! Is he rebuilding his fur coat collection before he rolls back in to surprise the gang?
Deb: First of all, AHHHH BOBO IS BACK!!
I have a feeling Bobo is out rounding up some of his old gang of revenants that scattered when the seal was broken around the Ghost River Triangle. His coat is mighty, but he still needs his cronies around him. The *really* interesting question is whether deep down he is still good, like we saw in the flashbacks, and if so, how will that come into play.
Heidi: This is the million dollar question. Where is he and will he remember anything from Wynonna’s vision quest? I don’t know where he is, but I think he will be the one to free Doc from the well and possibly work with them to defeat Clootie and end the curse. Nobody wants to keep getting sent to hell. I’m sure Bobo will be fashionably dressed through it all.
Jessie: Bobo is probably out there looking for a brand new fur coat at the thrift shop. Humor aside though I do believe he is preparing himself for the worst when he has to confront the Earp sisters and the team. He could very well be gathering up his own army of revenants again or be surprising us with something else.
Marina: I think he’s getting his stuff together and will come back with a vengeance.
Samantha: I honestly have no clue, so I like this fur coat concept. I’m really curious if Wynonna being dead for that millisecond brought back all of the revenants she’d already killed, or if it was just Bobo. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s still the villain he was in Season 1 or if he’ll turn into some kind of ally given what we now know about his past.
4. Nicole is married! Why do you think she didn’t tell Waverly about her previous marriage? Will this add yet more drama to their relationship?
Deb: Wow, that shocker really hit hard! Well we’ve already seen that above all, Nicole wants to protect Waverly (DNA RESULTS OMG!). Right from the beginning Waverly has had a lot thrown at her, with coming to terms with her sexuality and her black sheep sister coming back to town – not to mention the entire town being poisoned! Nicole absolutely loves Waverly; even her “wife” said so. This just seems to me to be another extension of Nicole trying to shelter Waverly, whether it’s the right thing to do or not.
Heidi: Lord, their “I’m sorry” party is going to be rough. I’m guessing she didn’t tell her because they aren’t married in the sense that they ever built a life together. Using a Brittney Spears concert was hysterical given Brittney had the 55 hour Vegas wedding. It is interesting to note that Shea appears to be wearing a wedding ring. That made me go hmmmmm. Why haven’t they taken the time to annul or divorce? In the end, I think Nicole and Waverly really love each other and will find a way to communicate.
Jessie: I was in literal shock when I realized Nicole was married and my god was I just screaming, from surprise and nothing else really. Nicole not telling Waverly she was married can have many different theories. I personally believe she didn’t tell her because the marriage obviously wasn’t something serious, because hello it was a Vegas wedding and she didn’t feel the need to share this information about her life. Even though it was something she should’ve mentioned from the beginning of their relationship, but also how do you bring up that conversation. This isn’t something that can be pushed aside, this is something that should bring more drama into their relationship but should be handled with them talking it out and sharing all their secrets to each other and growing closer.
Marina: Ah, that didn’t bother me too much. It added some drama in but not to make me panic. What happens in Vegas, does not stay in Vegas.
Samantha: I am so confused about this whole wife thing! Why didn’t Nicole tell Waverly? If they aren’t together anymore, why are they still married? Where did she go by the end of the episode and why wasn’t she there when Nicole woke up? In all honesty I think Nicole didn’t tell her about her wife, because when Season 1 was written I don’t think they intended to give her one. In context of the story however, I suppose she didn’t tell her about it because in Nicole’s eyes that relationship must be over. I’m really interested to see how this affects their relationship.
5. Speaking of Waverly and Nicole — they’ve had it pretty rough this season, what with Nicole’s secret-keeping and Waverly’s Earp crisis. Is this where you saw their relationship going? Are you into the drama, or are you not feeling the constant issues they’ve been facing?
Deb: I am and always will be Team WayHaught. Their chemistry is off the charts. The way their relationship unfolded was perfect and awkward and exactly what I wanted, before I knew what I wanted. Emily is SO good at giving us that. Do I want the gut-wrenching heartache that they will undoubtedly go through in the next few episodes? Noooo and yet, YES I DO. Angsty drama and romance don’t exist without bad things happening. Nicole and Waverly walking around holding hands and kissing in a happy bubble, while admittedly fun to watch for a while, would ultimately be boring. Bring on the drama!
Heidi: This is a show about demons, curses, and general badassery. I didn’t see any of this coming, but I didn’t expect (or want) nothing but sunshine and rainbows. I’m definitely into the drama. I want a compelling story that blows my mind every week. I think we’ve had just as many lovely moments as angsty ones. I’m here for both because it feels authentic. I want characters and relationships that feel real. This show give us both across the board.
Jessie: I actually did expect them to have their bumps along the road with their relationship this season because no relationship, no matter how beautiful, is perfect in any aspect. I love seeing the drama they have going on between them, draws me so much more to their relationship. Having them have their flaws and all that makes this relationship so much more realistic and important to me as someone in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Marina: It’s fine. Every couple in this world has issues if WayHaught didn’t have any issues I would feel cheated. I want them to have real world issues and work through them. How much more awesome will it be in the end, you know?
Samantha: I wish they’d catch a break for at least one episode here soon, it’s become kind of relentless. That being said, I do like that they are being handed real issues and that their storylines aren’t focused solely on their relationship. They are facing obstacles we’d see any hetero-pairing face in any other show, and Wayhaught is sticking together through all that’s been thrown at them. So in that aspect I’m really glad to see their relationship withstand the drama it’s been put through.
6. Wynonna “persuaded” Rosita into being a guinea pig for Jeremy’s cure. How did you feel about that moment?
Deb: My immediate reaction was to be angry at Wynonna. How could she put Peacemaker in Rosita’s face like that?! But then I saw the pain and panic in her eyes (damn you and your beautifully expressive face, Melanie Scrofano!). She clearly didn’t want to threaten Rosita, but she didn’t see any other way and time was very short. Rosita reacted exactly how you’d expect from someone who’d felt like an outsider but thought she was beginning to have friends. It was ultimately a heartbreaking moment for both of them and I’m looking forward to seeing where this leads when Wynonna comes back from wherever she has gone!
Heidi: I didn’t like it at all. Rosita was correct, Wynonna should have just asked. Rosita has proven herself as part of the team by recreating the serum for Dolls. I hope Jeremy does have that talk with Wynonna as it shouldn’t go unchecked.
Jessie: That moment was sort of harsh for Wynonna to do that, but I also understand why she did it at the same time. I didn’t get as upset as I thought I would because I know in the end Wynonna was doing this to help Nicole get the cure. Yes it wasn’t the most ideal way to ask Rosita but she wasn’t exactly thinking like that either I guess.
Marina: Sigh. That was a sad moment too. But same as before, love makes you do crazy things.
Samantha: Honestly, I didn’t like it. Waverly is right that’s not who they are, and revenant or not Rosita is their friend. I know Wynonna was desperate to help Nicole, but threatening Rosita is kind of low.
7. A world with no Doc and Wynonna! Spoiler alert! How has everything changed in this new universe? How long will Doc be stuck back in the well? And who is Waverly marrying?!
Deb: This is the best plot twist I have seen in a LONG time. WHO IS THE EARP HEIR?? Is Willa still alive? Is Ward?? Is Stupid Carl???! Does she have to re-kill all those revenants she put down in season one? If so, I suppose that means more time for Rosita, so – yay?
Waverly is probably not marrying Nicole (SADFACE). Not only would that be too easy, but Nicole is married already, and the absence of Wynonna wouldn’t change that. HOWEVER, Wynonna had very little impact on their developing relationship, so there’s always hope! But, no matter who she’s marrying, I refuse to think it’s Champ!
Heidi: I’ve learned to expect a cliffhanger ending. I’ve also learned that I will never correctly guess/theorize what it is, but I won’t stop trying. I noticed that not only did Waverly’s hair/shirt change, but that Doc and Dolls clothes changed as well. (That took me 3 re-watches to see.) However, in the “next on,” Nicole seems to have the new uniform and hair. Curious. I hate to say it, but I think Champ or someone completely off the radar is who Waverly is marrying. I wanted it to be Nicole, but again…see the “next on.” I don’t want to spoil anyone who didn’t watch. I think Bobo gets Doc out of the well and he remembers Wynonna. Nobody else does, BUT Waverly yelled her name and Jeremy heard it. I’m banking on them believing Doc because of that.
Jessie: First of all, a universe without our favorite mustached gun slinger is just overall cruel and then top that off without Wynonna’s awesome self well that universe wouldn’t be good at all. This new universe Is going to have some severe changes I believe even I won’t be too keen on, and the main one being that the revenants might all be just causing trouble and being overall annoying. As for Doc, I am really hoping he isn’t stuck in the well all too long because I worry for him being down there again. Onto the Waverly marriage…I am literally hoping and praying it is Nicole because I believe that in any alternate universe they are each other’s soulmates, and as cheesy as it sounds I do believe that soulmates always tend to find each other in any universe they may be. So honestly here is hoping she is marrying Nicole and not that boy-man we all do not want.
As far as Doc being in the well, I highly doubt he’ll be trapped for long. He’s the only one who seems to remember who Wynonna is, so he needs to get out and start rounding everyone up. He needs to convince Waverly that her wedding is less important than helping to find a sister she doesn’t remember and stopping the resurrection of a super evil demon!
Marina: Oh man, it’s going to be a wild ride. I think the wedding is for someone else, they’re just planning it.
Samantha: If Waverly is marrying Champ, I swear I will eat Nedry’s hat myself. I’m excited to see how Doc and Wynonna make it back and I’m interested to see how the universe has changed without them in it. It’s a little confusing to me because somehow Jeremy and Waverly still know each other, but they’d have never met if not for Wynonna, right? Speaking of which, it kind of takes the sting out of the curse for Waverly if she can’t remember Wynonna, is she supposed to feel the loss of her sister as the witch intended? Anyway, I hope Waves is marrying Nicole in this timeline, just so I can see them happy and in pretty dresses for a while before reality comes swooping back in.
Final Verdict: The Earpocalypse is Coming
Wynonna Earp once again delivers a tight episode chock full of big character moments. This is not a show that shies away from putting its characters above the plot, but here Emily Andras neatly balanced both as we take a look at the hard choices that get made when humans are at their wit’s end.
Even though we still don’t know what Bobo is up to, and the Sisters plot is perhaps more muddled than it needs to be (there hasn’t been this much drama over rings since Frodo went on a quest with one), we’re ready to see the toll the high emotional stakes are taking on everyone.
And seriously! A world with no Doc or Wynonna? Catch us tuning in next week — there’s no way we’re not finding out how Doc gets out of that well.
‘Wynonna Earp’ returns Friday, August 18th on SYFY.
Wynonna Earp delivers on its characters, but falls a little on the plot. This is not a show that shies away from drama, even if it’s in the middle of some of its core relationships. However, the slightly overburdened plot gets a little lost amidst the ramped up conflict between the characters. But, as always, characters should come before plot — so we’ll wait to see how all of this plays out.
